First-person racing sims have come a long way since Night Driver (oops, there I go, dating myself again), but the basic useridea is still the same - go as far as you can and as fast as you can in the shortest possible time.
An IndyCar racer graced by Mario Andretti, one of the legendary drivers of the sport. A typically excellent EA product that should please just about everybody out there. My only gripe is with the sprite scaling, as I prefer Domark's fast polygonal F1 game engine.

Max RPM is known best for its split-screen play.
This game was an experiment to see if the current, non-scrolling, non-scaling 2-D hardware could be used to simulate the first-person driving effects seen in other games of the period.

Anybody who reuser the short film "Running Man" from MTV's Liquid Television or the Streamline video release Neo-Tokyo will immediately recognize the style and flavor of this game, in which the drivers are cybernetically linked to their hyped-up antigrav sleds.
Unfortunately it's in Japanese and I can't really figure out what's going on! Add in the poor graphics and you end up with something that's not worth bothering with.

Michael Andretti is on the world tour among some of the best tracks in the world. And you must take control of him. Drive your engine among the others and win the cup!
This game stinks. I had a hard time getting control of my car, it barely could turn. I never got up to speed, and I was driving an automatic. The person who designed this game is good on details of the course, but needs a class in computer graphics and the like.

Story: Mickey Mouse's dog, Pluto, is kidnapped by the Weasels for his "diamond" collar (later found out to be fake). As one of the drivers, including Disney characters such as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pete, the player races on tracks in the United States, based on locations such as New York, Alaska, Los Angeles, and Seattle, to find the Weasels and save Pluto.
Gameplay: Mickey's Speedway USA includes a Grand Prix mode, as well as multiplayer racing and battle modes. The game features six initial characters, with a further four being unlockable. The default characters are paired in likeness, and each pair is given the same statistics, such as Donald and Mickey having average statistics, or Pete and Goofy having a concentration in speed.

During the late 1980s, Micro Machines, which are miniature vehicles produced by Lewis Galoob Toys, were quite a fad. By 1994, many of the kids who grew up playing with Micro Machines (and the Nintendo Entertainment System) had abandoned toy cars altogether and were spending most of their leisure time playing videogames. Ocean put two and two together and released Micro Machines for the Super Nintendo.
In this game you can choose from eight different Micro Machines (including boats, trucks, and race cars) to race on 28 tracks featuring eight different environments. You can test your driving skills against the eleven computer-controlled competitors or challenge up to three friends (one at a time) in head-to-head action. You can enter a tournament, compete in a single race, or take part in the Micro Machines Challenge, a series of races that lets you add to your Micro Machines collection after each race you win.

If you're bored of racing Formula 1 cars, rally cars or MotoGP bikes in their natural habitats, this could be for you. It involves racing miniatures representing particular vehicle types across a particular terrain found around the house. The Sports Cars race on the desktop, 4x4s in the sandpit, Formula 1 cars on a snooker table, and so on.
These levels were packed with variation. The Snooker tables had the track painted on, although this was open to deviation (as were most levels), and had you racing through the pockets and across the rim of the table. Tanks raced as well, with the chance of shooting out your opponent if they got directly in front of you. The desktop levels included binders to jump across, pencil-sharpeners to avoid, and lots of visual jokes in the open homework.
Viewed from overhead with small graphics, the races include up to 4 cars. In one player challenge mode you race through the 21 tracks in a set order, selecting your 3 opponents as you go along (adding a fair amount of strategy - userideally you should aim to eliminate the better CPU cars early on), eliminating one after every third race (assuming that you can finish in the top 2 of a race within your 3 lives). If you win 3 races in a row without using a continue you get a time-trial race which can earn you an extra life.
The real innovation of the game was in the multiplayer modes. You started level on a sliding scale, each in position 4. When one car got far enough ahead to force the other car off-screen, the slider moved in their favour. Once it reached the end (which involved beating them 4 times more than they beat you) you won the level, although if 3 laps were completed, the person leading at that point is declared the winner. 9 of the tracks were available in this mode, although you could also play it as a 1-player game across all the tracks.

You get to drive around in those little vehicles that Galoob sells by the ton on some very strange tracks - like the bathtub, on the dining table, and so on. You even get to choose your driver from some rather crazy looking characters.
This is the first game in the Micro Machines series and was a huge hit at the time. The courses can sometimes be a little difficult making the game a bit frustrating.
