That is the basic premise behind this popular series of Japanese strategy sims - so popular that at least one port was made for every major gaming console and home computer system in Japan at the time.

Advanced Daisenryaku, aka Advanced Military Commander is a true historical wargaming sim, as you get to take on the role of Adolf Hitler as he conquers Europe during the initial stages of World War II . If you are a strategy buff, then you will go ape over what are the most sophisticated wargaming titles to be found for the platform. If you are an arcade gamer, look elsewhere - you will get bored fast.

While the pieces on the board have similar relative abilities to the different pieces in chess, when one piece attempts to take another, the removal of the targeted piece is not automatic. Instead, the two pieces are placed into a full-screen 'combat arena' and must battle to determine who takes the square.

Generally (but not always) in combat, a stronger piece will succeed over a weaker piece in either defending or capturing a square. It is also possible for the fight to result in a double-kill, in which both pieces are eliminated. This uncertainty adds a level of complexity into the game, since it is not always possible to predict if taking a square will be successful.

Each character's strength is also affected by the colour of the square on which the combat occurs and by a light-and-dark cycle on the 'neutral' squares, indicated by the changing colour of the board. The 'light' side is stronger on the white squares and during the light cycle, and the 'dark' side is stronger on the dark squares and during the dark cycle.

Different pieces have different abilities in the combat phase. These include movement, life, and weapon effectiveness. The weapons vary by reach and the amount of damage inflicted on an opponent. For example, the pawn (represented by knights on the 'light' side and goblins on the 'dark' side) moves quickly, but has very little strength; its weapon, a sword or club, has limited reach and power. A dragon is considerably faster and can fire a powerful projectile blast, while a golem moves slowly and fires a slow but powerful boulder.

In this two player game each player controls an artillery gun set in a mountain landscape with the goal of destroying the other player. Players take turns firing at each other.

On each turn you have a limited amount of time in which the barrel angle and powder level can be set in order to control the direction and distance of the shot. When deciding on your shot, you will need to take the current conditions into account, which includes wind speed/direction and any mountains that may get in your way. Successfully destroying your opponents gun will earn you a point, and the first player to reach the set number of points wins the game. There are multiple skill levels available which set the amount of time you have to make a shot.

Simulating Japanese survival war games, players must survive an assault from the bad guys. The closest equivalent that North American culture has to this game is paintball. Each character is assigned a Japanese code name and a main weapon by the player himself. Players can only move up to a certain amount of squares per turn and can only be hit a certain number of times before being killed. The game itself is divided into 24 different missions. Victory conditions vary from mission to mission, and may be anything from "kill the leader" to "free the prisoner and return to the escape point."

Unlike a medieval strategy game, rushing at an opponent with nothing but a knife is the way to get killed. Medium and long-range weapons are the speciality of the game. Battles can take place anywhere from desert islands to office buildings or shopping malls. All the opponents are seen wearing helmets that resemble those of legendary Star Wars villain Darth Vader.

Long ago, an ancient crown with great powers was broken into four pieces and divided among the various kingdoms of the world. Prophecy says that the crown will only be restored when one comes worthy enough to put an end to all wars. No one has heeded the prophecy for many centuries, but now comes one who is willing to take the challenge - a brave soul who is willing to take up the quest to become the one and only Battle Master....

A more traditional RPG than its Japanese cousins, with just a hint of arcade play thrown in for good measure. Simplistic by Phantasy Star standards, so its probably a good starting point for those new to the genre.

Battle of Kingdom is a 1991 Game Boy video game that was jointly created by the Meldac, Live Planning, and the Lenar companies. It was only released for a Japanese market.

The object is to lead a kingdom through various battles using the format of a traditional board game. In order to advance to the next battle, players must destroy at least 92% of the monsters on the battlefield. Each stage represents a battle in a high fantasy campaign to save the world from an unknown evil force (that resides in a skull castle). As players progresses to the right side of the screen killing monsters from the enemy forces, the probability of winning the entire battle shows up in percentage. Players are unable to automatically attack the opponent if the number of points on the attack power meter becomes depleted. Attacking manually does not deduct attack points from the player's statistics, however.

Monsters like slimes can face off against each other for control of the playing field in the lower levels of the game while players are allowed in the upper levels of the game to summon the King's loyal army of archers, knights, horsemen and magicians. All these creatures must be bought in card form before being allowed to join the battlefield. Even the leader of each respective kingdom is expected to fight. The player's creatures can either fight, run away from battle, or cast a magic spell. All creatures have hit points, attack points, and special points.

While the story itself is in Japanese, most of the information that is important to the game uses ASCII letters that are familiar to people who are fluent in the English language. Players can acquire gold mines to increase wealth and construct buildings like stock rooms and bridges while not battling. The ending of the game shows the warriors in triumph because the evil force inside the skull castle surrendered.

Okay, men, here's the situation. We're going to go to war, but we need dolts who are willing to fight. That's right - you're the lucky volunteers. Now go out there, train your squad up to snuff, and blow away anything that isn't us. Got it? Good - so get in gear and go! Move it! Move-it-move-it-move-it-go-go-go!

A hilariously funny military shooter that had me in stitches the first time I played it. An almost faithful port of the original from the almighty Amiga, except for the sound.

Your goal is to topple kings.

Castle Quest works like chess. You take turns moving your pieces one at a time. The player who topples an opposing king wins the round. But being a good chess player won't be enough to win. With magical attacks and Card Roulette to contend with, you'll have to be lucky too. In Quest Mode there are 24 kings to defeat, and the last is that fearsome King of Magic, Baron.

Your task: to restore peace to the realm of Jokerina.
