Sumo wrestling, like most sports, is an acquired taste. Western audiences for the most part fail to grasp the rich tradition behind this Japanese sport and instead focus on appearances - two really fat guys standing on a square wooden platform and trying like crazy to shove each other out of a ring inscribed within the edges of the platform. Once you understand sumo and its rituals, though, it can be just as entertaining as its American so-called "professional" counterpart.

Seems to be quite faithful to the sport except for some obvious Street Fighter 2 inspired touches. Great graphics, great sound, and good gameplay, makes a refreshing change from the usual beat 'em up.

1-on-1 fighter featuring 8 selectable characters.

The game's major innovation is the ability to walk into the background, in a similar manner to side-scrolling beat 'em ups such as "Streets of Rage" or "Final Fight" because of this, unlike many other 2-D fighting games, the game uses one action button to jump, it also does not use the 'D' button, (Which many of SNK's other fighters did), only 2 action buttons are used for attacking (punch and kick), instead grappling and grabbing opponents (Pressing the A & B buttons simultaneously) is the focus of the gameplay, opponents can counter being grabbed, as well as break free. Also featured is weapon play, again similar to beat 'em ups, weapons can be picked up and thrown, or used in special & standard attacks. Weapons are thrown in by background crowd user who will step forward to toss them into the ring. Another (strange) innovation of the game is that characters start to sweat -graphicly- after a while.

Characters have unusually high health for the genre, with multiple, different colored, health bars in one bar similar to a method of health bars used for boss characters in games of the time, in addition to this, each character has a 'Crazy Meter' at the bottom of the screen, which is built up as characters attack, this gives the character a special, often very bizarre, attack that will kill the opponent outright, known as the Gan Gan Attack in Japan, and the Crazy Attack in the US.

Battles are joined by irreverent, sometimes humorous pre-fight banter from characters, the dialog differs depending on whom each opponent is, and a clashing of 2 small images of the characters eyes in the center of the screen.

When released most reviewers though AODK was a mediocre title at best. Now it is considered a cult game, recommended for all those gamers who want a unique fighting game.

Ryo's sister has been kidnapped by the master criminal Mr. Big and is being held somewhere in the city. Ryo enlists the aid of his sometime martial arts rival Robert, and together they battle their way through Mr.Big's minions as they try to find Ryo's sister before time runs out. A popular videogame that inspired a short anime film.

A mediocre Street Fighter clone. Decent graphics but only 2 characters to choose from and very few moves.

An early Neo-Geo martial arts fighting game with 2 selectable characters in 1-player mode and 8 selectable characters in 2-player mode which also features a long-nosed end boss. Progressive damage is shown on each fighter's face for a dramatic effect.

This is the first fighting game to feature the 'camera zoom' - where the camera zooms in when the fighters are close together and zooms out when the fighters move away from each other. Also the first fighting game to utilize a 'spirit meter'. Every time a special move is executed the spirit meter is depleted accordingly. The more powerful the special move, the more it depletes. When it's empty special moves can't be done anymore, however, you can recharge the spirit meter by standing still and holding the A or B button leaving you totally defenseless.

The character's fighting stance and their victory pose depends on how beaten up they are.

An unusual-looking beat 'em up with heroes made from stacked steel balls. Can you fight your way to the top to a one-on-one duel with the Jester?

It's always impressive when a 3D game can be pulled off on a 2D platform, but lackluster gameplay cripples this effort.

Ballz is a fighting game in which the characters are completely rendered in "balls" or colored spheres. Choose from eight characters (Boomer, Bruiser, Crusher, Divine, Kronk, Tsunami, Turbo and Yoko) as you make your way through 15 futuristic arenas with eight bosses to fight. A villain known as the Jester has organized the contest and will insult you each step of the way on a background scoreboard. Move through the ranks of fighters until you come face-to-face with the Jester himself.

Characters rate from one to five in 12 areas, such as speed, punch damage, and charge attacks. Special moves include the ability to morph, perform aerial attacks, and cause explosions or cyclones. Characters all have between 7 to 16 special moves, and can taunt or beg for mercy to increase damage or replenish health, respectively. Options include setting the number of matches in two-player mode (up to 21), choosing one of three difficulty levels for the one-player game, and adjusting handicap for two-player fights. Ballz also features several voice clips to humiliate opponents. The game includes support for AT&T's planned but never-released Edge 16 modem peripheral.

A 3-D, weapons-based fighting game featuring a total of 15 different fighters - 11 main fighters, 2 hidden fighters and 2 bosses. Battles take place in a number of 3-D rendered arenas. Unlike most other 3-D fighters of the time - in which only the graphics are 3-D, with the actual fighting taking place on a 2-D plane - Battle Arena Toshinden features wholly 3-D gameplay that allows players to dive out of the path of their opponent's attacks.

Composed of a one-player mode called The Hero and a one- or two-player contest called The Battle, Battle Blaze is a one-on-one fighting game in which you can portray up to six different characters. Along with a standard move or two, each character comes equipped with four to six advanced attacks based on his or her abilities and weapon of choice. For example: Tesya, a beautiful, boot-wearing warrior, can inflict damage on an opponent with her Kiss of Doom and a swift Boot to the Head; Lang, a sword-wielding athletic nomad is capable of a Kneeling Stab and a Whirlwind Kick; and Lord Gustoff, a strong, mace-wielding Half-Orc, can perform a Lunge Throw and can let loose a hypnotizing Flying Mace. Set in a preindustrial society called the Great World, the storyline involves the community of Virg and a menacing netherworlder by the name of Autarch. He has upset the tranquility of this peaceful berg by sending forth spirits to possess the warriors. These warriors are competing in a fully authorized tournament for the chance to be the one and only Warrior King.

The game focuses mostly on reality fighting than fictional. At the start of the game in 1P mode, the player will face against the other fighter that uses the same fighting style as the one the player chose. After the player wins against the opponent, the player will face against other opponents that use other fighting styles in the K-Road Tournament. If the player loses, the game will only allow the player to continue fighting through it with the character he used, and will not allow the player to choose another character.

The gameplay has a 6-button layout, but with command inputs different compared to ones in most fighting games released at the time. There are three punches and kicks for a few directions (weak, medium and strong). There are seven fighting styles featured in the game .
