The story to this game is a real stumper. Wolverine doesn't know where he is. He takes a look around and finds a door. after some thought about what to do, he enters the door, seeing that there isn't much else to do.

As you can see, not very strong story wise. It can be forgiven, though, seeing that it's only a platform.

There are about 9 or 10 levels (or 'trials') in wolverine, each with a different theme (except for the first and last two trails) such as 'trail by air', where you have to jump lots and lots of platforms and panels, or 'trail be water', where you have to swim through a water maze, occasionally resurfacing for air. Pretty simple.

Story:
The game follows Wolverine as he receives a mysterious transmission via computer; someone or something has information about his past and arranges for them to meet at an undisclosed location in Canada. It's here where the game's first stage begins; a laboratory teeming with armed guards and sentry robots.

Gameplay:
The game share similarities with Nintendo's Metroid franchise, as Wolverine jumps and attacks through large multi-floored levels, attacking doors to give him access to new areas. Each level requires a set amount of enemies to be destroyed before entry to the next area is granted. A password function enables the player to continue the game at any level. Upon taking damage, his energy will recover overtime thanks to his mutant healing factor.

Most of the X-Men have been captured by Magneto; only Wolverine and Cyclops survived the initial assault on X-Men headquarters.
Basic concepts in the game include punching, kicking, and jumping. Mutant abilities can be activated and de-activated completely at will. However, these mutant abilities drain energy from the player's character. There are several foes from the X-Men universe to defeat (including the Brood Queen) and various diverse settings to fight in. These levels are often labyrinths of either technological wonders, biological wonders, or a mixture of both. As more X-Men are rescued, these allies can be called upon to take over as the player's character.

"Fearing the rising tide of anti-mutant hysteria, Professor Charles Xavier, a mutant telepath, formed the X-Men to confront the fear that mutants will enslave humanity.... The X-Men stand as humanity's only defense against other powerful mutants, such as Magneto, who do not share their dream and insist that the only way mutants can survive the persecution is by forcefully taking their rightful place as humanity's masters." Based on the popular serial by Marvel Comics.

In X-Men you can play as any four pre-chosen X-Men and see cameos from the others, a rather plain and mediocre side-scroller with frustrating gameplay.

Has noticeably improved gameplay and graphics over X-Men and offers a better choice of player characters as well.

X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse is full of the characters from Marvel's X-Men comic books. To start, there is Wolverine, Cyclops, Psylocke, Gambit, and the blue man himself, Beast. From the onset, you can choose which of these characters you want to control. Professor X gives the basic plot, and from there each character has to complete their own level until all can move on. You have two lives for each character. You can kick, punch, jump, or use a super move. Super moves differ for each character, and you can only use them when they are available to you. Wolverine's super move is a hurricane punch with his claws. Cyclops gives a burst of optical energy. Gambit throws one of his ever-present playing cards at the enemy. Beast rushes towards the enemy with a shoulder-block. Psylocke uses her mental abilities while running towards the enemy to defeat them.

In addition to the mission mode, which gives you the full story, there is also a training mode, in which you have unlimited use of the character's super move, as well as three lives per X-Man.

In a dark future, Mojo has his own TV show where the participants fight to death. He has imprisoned some X-Men from the past to recreate their greatest battles. Wolverine and Rogue have to enter the game and rescue their friends, then defeating Mojo to return back home.

In this platform game, the player starts by choosing either Wolverine or Rogue. At each new level beaten, a new X-Men will be available: first Gambit, then Cyclops, Havoc and finally Shard. If one of the X-Men dies, the player has to start the level again, choosing among the remaining X-Men to play. After all the X-Men have died, the game is over.

Each character can activate his/her power at will by pressing Button 1 & 2 at the same time. Wolverine can use his claws, Rogue can fly, Gambit can throw explosive cards, Cyclops will fire optic blasts, Havoc fires plasma blasts and Shard fires energy blasts. The characters have an energy meter and a power meter, which will wear out as they are hit or use their powers, respectively. They can find items to restore their energy and power.

You must find the way out of each of the six levels. Once finding it, you will face a boss, usually known characters from the comics like Magneto, Fitzroy, a Sentinel, etc. The last boss is Mojo himself.
