The most popular American football game to hit the NES console, Tecmo Bowl pits the player vs. the computer in 11 game single-elimination playoff action, or you can go head-to-head with a human opponent in action or coach mode. There are 12 teams of real NFL players (circa 1988) to choose from, but don't look for official NFL team logos or mascots like Bears or Dolphins--Tecmo Bowl has the NFLPA but not the NFL license.
The play perspective is top-down and the screen scrolls horizontally. Player graphics are large and colorful, which is made possible by limiting the number of players to nine per team. Animated cut-scenes are shown following touchdowns and at half-time, and crowds are shown filling the endzone seats.
There are four plays to choose from on offense--usually two runs and two passes. The player takes control of the quarterback before the snap and then either hands off to the running back or works through his receiver progression from the top to the bottom of the screen. Defense consists of trying to guess which offensive play the opponent will select and then taking control of one of the defensive players before the snap. A very simple power meter system is used for kicking field goals, extra points, and punts.
There are no game or season stats and there is no way to save your season, but there is a password feature allowing you to resume tournament play where you left off.

Tecmo Super Bowl makes the leap from the NES to the Super Nintendo packed with features aimed to satisfy the most demanding Arcade fan. The game includes 28 NFL teams with real players based on 1993 Spring Training rosters. Play up to three different schedules or try to build a Super Bowl dynasty with the three-year mode, where you take control of one team for three consecutive seasons. Coach mode lets you simply call the plays and watch the computer carry them out.
Substitutions are important since players have different health conditions that can lead to injuries, and inclement weather (such as rain or snow) will affect your players' performance. While both team and player ratings are based on the 1992 season, battery backup allows you to store any recent statistics accumulated during play. Tecmo Super Bowl is an Arcade-style football game played on a horizontal field with an emphasis on action. Cinema screens add a flair of drama to key plays, and the eight offensive plays can be changed at any time with the customizable playbook.

First in a series of side-scrolling arcade-style football sims that bear a strong resemblance to Super High Impact. These games stress gameplay over realism, so don't be surprised to see things that wouldn't happen in real life. A nice change-of-pace from the seriousness of EA's Madden NFL franchise. Great for gamers who just want to play ball and not have to worry about the details.
Tecmo Super Bowl - great gameplay wise, but the graphics are so 8-bit bad that you'd swear you were playing an SMS.

Tecmo Super Bowl II: Special Edition significantly upgrades the graphics and features over its 1993 predecessor. While the game is still played from a horizontal perspective, the field has been slightly angled to show more of the action. Players are now larger and more detailed with new spinning and dragging animations on offense. The gameplay has been refined as well. Players can now call audibles, fake punts or field goals, change defensive formations, and make trades. The offensive plays have doubled from 1993's version, and an automatic schedule feature will create a new schedule based on your previous year's record. Can you help your team become a Super Bowl dynasty? For those with both systems, the Super Nintendo version has the same features as the Genesis release.

A new Superstar Mode gives you the chance to create up to 19 players and adjust their abilities. Don't like a team's starting quarterback? Put yourself in the game!
