Gauntlet, the original arcade smash hit, is fighting game where you choose a character a let rip into the hordes of enemies that assault you on you way to the end of the level.

It featured a choice of four characters to play with, each with different weapons. Thor the Warrior, with his bludgeoning battle axe. Thyra the Valkyrie, with her close range sword. Questor the Elf, with his long range bow. And Merlin the Wizard with his magical bolts.

You (and another player) must make your way through 100 levels of mayhem and magic.

Ghosts, goblins and even the life draining Death are your enemies. They stream out of generators. Destroy the generators first before tackling the rest.

Find keys to help you progress to the exit. Look for scattered magic potions. These act like smart bombs and clear the screen of all enemies. Beware of poison though.Treasure is abundant throughout the levels and adds to your score.

Gauntlet is a maze-based shoot-em-up for up to four players. Heavily influenced by classic fantasy conventions, players take on the role of either Thor the Warrior, Thyra the Valkyrie, Merlin the Wizard, or Questor the Elf and must play cooperatively as they explore and fight their way through the enemy-packed mazes. Competitive play is encouraged as players must fight for the limited amount of food, treasure, magic potions and power-up items that litter the dungeons.

Each of Gauntlet's four characters have different strengths and weaknesses: Thyra has the strongest armour, Thor is best at hand-to-hand combat, Questor has the fastest speed and Merlin has the most powerful magic attacks. The object of the game is simply to survive as long as possible while exploring Gauntlet's mazes in search of treasure, food, magic potions and, ultimately, the exit that leads to the next dungeon.

The potions - shown as blue bottles - that litter the levels offer either improved character abilities (such as 'speed' or 'extra shot power') or can be used as a 'smart bomb', destroying some or all of the on-screen monsters. Potions are also the only way to kill the game's 'Death' character that appears in many of the stages. Magic potions can be kept and used at the player's discretion by pressing 'Magic' button, although each potion can only be used once.

The first seven mazes are always the same, but from level 8 onwards, players will find themselves on any one of over a hundred different mazes. If players survive for long enough, the mazes will be repeated in a different order. How long a player lasts depends upon the player's 'health' level. Health continually depletes as time progresses and further health is lost by contact with various monsters or their projectiles. Health can be replenished by consuming the food found in the mazes or by inserting more credits. The many treasure chests that litter the levels can be plundered for points, and collecting treasure increases a player's score multiplier when two or more players are playing the game.

Gauntlet II was one of the first games to support a 4-Way Co-op mode, long before Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, or The Simpsons. Just having this feature caused gamers to flock to their local game stores to buy it up, along with a few spare controllers. The game wasn't multiplayer only, as anybody could go it alone and fight their way through dungeon after dungeon of brilliant gameplay.

A total of 4 unique characters were available to play as, each being a different class: the Warrior (the battler), the Wizard (the magic dude), the Elf (the archer) and the Valkyrie (the female warrior). Now using these characters, gamers must delve deep into mazes and labyrinths to find hordes of treasure, gold and all sorts of booty. Sadly, there is no real story behind it, but it doesn't matter at all, since this is all about finger-aching, sweaty-hand and wide-eyed gaming. It's a fun-filled ride of determination and grit; if you die, then you're not man enough to handle it.

Gauntlet II is a 1986 arcade game released by Atari Games and the first sequel to the game Gauntlet. Gauntlet II, like its predecessor, is a fantasy-themed hack and slash.
Itwas ported to the Game Boy in 1990

The gameplay is very similar to the original Gauntlet, a topdown dungeon crawl supporting up to four players. The biggest difference from the original game is that players can choose useridentical classes, instead of being limited to a particular one for each joystick; each player is differentiated by color. Thus, instead of having a "warrior", "wizard", and "valkyrie" (for instance), in Gauntlet II there could be a "red wizard", a "blue elf" and a "green warrior".

In addition to the new "class" system, new level designs were added, including the possibility of encountering them in altered ways by having the play-field turned in steps of 90

Gauntlet II is a direct sequel to the legendary maze-based fantasy themed shoot-em-up, released a year earlier. Atari chose not to tinker with the core game-play mechanic to any great degree, opting instead to enhance the already excellent multi-player action that had created such a stir upon the original game's release.

As with its prequel, up to four players once again take on the role of either 'Thor the Warrior', 'Thyra the Valkyrie', 'Merlin the Wizard', or 'Questor the Elf' and must play cooperatively as they explore and fight their way through the enemy-packed mazes, collecting potions, food and treasure as they searched for the exit that would lead them to the next dungeon.

Changes to the sequel included the ability for players to play whatever character they wanted, even if that character was already in play. Characters were now colour-coded and players would find themselves taking on the role of 'Blue Elf', 'Green Wizard', etc. New in-game speech was added to allow for the new player definitions.

Other changes included the ability to 'bounce' shots off walls - known as 'Reflective Shots' - providing the correct potion was picked up. As well as new potions, Gauntlet II also featured several new monsters. The most notorious of the new additions was the Fire-breathing Dragon that guards the exit to some dungeons. This powerful creature takes multiple hits to kill and defeating it would see the players rewarded with a permanent potion and a bag of treasure.

Another notable addition was the 'It' monster: any player who was tagged by the creature would suddenly find that all of that level's monsters would ONLY chase the tagged player, completely ignoring the presence of all other players. The only way to remove this curse was to tag another player, thus making them 'it'.

New level elements were also added to further increase variety. These included dungeons with entirely invisible walls, magical walls (which changed into monsters or items when hit), stun tiles (which stunned any player that walked on them) and exits that flashed between functioning and non-functioning.

But there are mystical amulets to be collected which will enhance your powers to repel monsters, transport through walls or increase your firepower. Avoid poisoned food and potions, collecting them makes you dizzy! Gauntlet II is not just a further episode in this enthralling crusade, it is a whole new experience in action-packed adventure!

Gauntlet IV is a translation of the arcade classic with two new modes of play: Quest and Battle. Quest mode plays similarly to the arcade version, except your character gains experience points to increase their abilities and they can purchase items with their treasure. Battle mode allows you and your friends to battle each other.
