Top-down professional level Formula One sim with a decent array of options.

The graphics are on the slim side and the sound could be better, but it's still quite fun. Think of it as a seriously souped-up Rally-X.

F1-Roc II: Race of Champions puts you in competition against 25 other drivers battling for the Grand Prix championship. You begin in a prototype car in Group C racing, where you must win on all eight racetracks.

After winning Group C, you move to F3000, which features eight tougher courses and competition against better drivers. The key here is acquiring the proper combination of car parts; the most expensive parts are not always the best in a given situation. Now you are ready for all 16 available tracks in the F1 Grand Prix. Here the goal is to earn as many driver's points as possible. When you begin the next racing season, you can choose a new car and sponsor.

As in real car racing, speed alone is not enough; you must learn to take tight corners, pass other cars, and maintain high speeds without losing control. You must also earn a spot in a race by passing a qualifying run. Occasionally, you must make pit stops to replace worn tires. By checking in with your chief engineer, you can upgrade your car by purchasing tires, a rear wing, a front wing, a new engine, brakes, and suspension. Battery backup lets you save your progress in up to three different games.

If all of this sounds daunting, you might want to choose the Practice option and play a few rounds just for fun.

There are more than a dozen open wheel racing tracks in the world; all of them corresponding to the 1992 Formula One season. Realistic looking advertisements are present where the audience sits complete with near-perfect spelling of sponsors; this mild level of censorship applies because some of the sponsors are tobacco or alcohol-related. The game uses the Super Famicom's Mode 7 to give the track and background perspective.

Players have a limited amount of money to modify their race car before having to qualify and eventually try to win the race. Modifications must be purchased out of the player's pocket like if he were a driver/owner. As with F1 rules at the time, no refueling was possible; pit stops are only used to fix damage on the automobile. Post-race damage penalties will occur if the player finished the race with a damaged vehicle. Even a minor dent can be expensive to a rookie because of the high level of marksmanship by the mechanics. Total damage can and will force the player to retire from the race. The player can choose to hide his stats (in order to look at the backgrounds) or view his stats in order to find out whether he is winning or not.
