The first "slide-and-shoot" game, Space Invaders has players piloting a laser base that moves right and left along the bottom of the screen, firing upward at descending aliens. Each wave of invaders consists of 55 enemies grouped in 11 columns, moving in unison horizontally, and dropping a level each time they reach either side of the screen. The player's job is to destroy the invaders before they reach the bottom of the playfield. Eliminating the Mystery Ship that flies intermittently over the top row of invaders will earn the player Bonus points. Positioned across the lower section of the screen lie four bunkers, under which players can hide. However, the bunkers erode piece-by-piece when shot by enemy or friendly fire. In addition to being the first of its type, Space Invaders was the first game to post a continuous high score (assuming no one unplugs the machine). Other groundbreaking features include menacing sound effects, addictive gameplay and a high degree of character design and animation. The game was enormously popular, with more than 60,000 machines sold in its first year of production in the U.S. It was such a hit in Japan that it caused a shortage of the 100-yen piece used to play the game.

In 1978, Earth successfully repulsed an invasion from outer space thanks to "the Tank." The Tank was based on alien technology found when a scout ship had crashed years earlier. Now, over 20 years later, a new Tank has been created based on the technology recovered during the 1978 invasion. And none too soon, because the Invaders are back!

Space Invaders is yet another classic arcade game remake by Activision. (See Battlezone and Asteroids.) But this time, Activision licensed a game from Taito instead of Atari. The game stays close to its roots while adding many power-ups and enemies.

You can play either one or two players against the Invaders, who march down the screen in orderly rows and columns, at one of three skill levels. You'll start at Pluto and work your way through the Solar System to Mars, then Venus, and finally Earth. There are four common aliens (red, green, blue, and yellow), plus seven more less common ones. You receive special one shot power-ups by shooting four of the same type of Invaders in a row. As in the original game, there are also Mother Ships that fly above the action, but in this version if you hit them you can pick up other useful power-ups like shields or double shots. Plus, after fighting off several waves on each planet, you'll face a unique boss. If you manage to finish the game, you'll be able to play a reproduction of the original coin-op.

Space Invaders is quite simply the most influential video-game of all time. A single player moves an armed 'base' left or right along the bottom of the screen and shoots the endless waves of aliens marching relentlessly down the screen towards earth.

There are four buildings (shields) at the bottom of the screen that the player can hide behind, but these will eventually be destroyed by either enemy missiles or by direct contact with the invaders themselves. The player's shots will also destroy the shields.

The aliens' descent quickens as they are eliminated, making them harder to hit. A flying saucer will fly across the top of the screen at regular intervals and can be shot to earn extra points.

Story:
In 1978, Earth successfully repelled an alien space invasion with "the Tank." The Tank wasa weapon built from alien technology found when an alien scout ship crashed on Earth sometime in the past. Now, over 20 years later, an improved Tank has been created with the technology recovered from the 1978 invasion. Good thing too, because the Space Invaders are back!

You'll start at Pluto and work your way through the Solar System to Mars, then Venus, and finally Earth. There are a variety of different alien ships of all sorts of shapes and colors. By shooting down four ships of the same color in a row, you'll receive a special one shot power-ups.

Updated versions of the original classic arcade shooter with a few new tricks up its sleeve. The premise is the
same, though - you are presented with a screenfull of aliens, and you must blow them ALL away before they get all the way to the bottom and destroy you.

While it won't trump the simple purity of the original, it's well worth the look. Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum....

Space Invaders II allowed for 2-player simultaneous competitive play (although both players could work together). Besides shooting the invaders, one of the goals was to destroy your opponent (either CPU or another player) and gain his ships!

A modern and fitting tribute to Taito's 1978 seminal shoot-em-up, "Space Invaders".

There are now 3 different game modes to choose from. These include a faithful recreation of the legendary original - available in both upright and cocktail versions - and replete with a simulation of the infamous "coloured plastic overlay" that was used to add the impression of full colour graphics to the original game.

The 2 remaining game modes are 'Versus', with simultaneous split-screen 2-player action, and "Parody", which features characters and graphics from other well-known Taito games, such as "The New Zealand Story", "Bubble Bobble" and "Liquid Kids". Despite the graphical changes, the Parody version plays useridentically to the original game, and all modes retain the original, legendary sound effects.

The sequel to the legendary "Space Invaders"; Part II's game-play is virtually useridentical to the original game, with the player once again moving a laser base back and forth along the bottom of the screen, shooting endless waves of aliens marching downwards towards the player. Once again flying saucers cab be shot for extra points.

Remember that arcade classic Invaders? Well this game takes it to the next level with harder aliens, bosses, power ups, and a variety of scenery! Invaders come in several configurations for you to try to blast, and power-ups help you with more weapons to choose from.

Original waves sets this miles above any clone. Still a great blast.

Your ship moves left and right at the bottom of the screen shooting wave after wave of space invaders. The new wrinkles include colourful backdrops and impressive power-ups. The best new addition to the game however is the cattle mutilation section where you must defend cows from flying saucers that swoop down and carry the cows away.
