Okay, so heres a question I know everyone has an answer for

What do you guys think is better? Japanese, or North American Animation. To be frank, both styles have blown my mind. I'm really having a hard time deciding. What do you guys think?

In general, I'd say that North American animation is superior.

However, North America did bring us Clutch Cargo, so it loses a few points right off the bat.

I'll have to go with American animation. So many beloved characters have come from the US, starting from Mickey Mouse to Popeye to Bugs Bunny and a whole lot more!

I think the two are about equal on animation quality. Both have shit-tier and god-tier studios. I guess I wont vote for either.

The reason I prefer Japanese animation is generally three fold:

1. Anime tends to be more linear and narrative driven and less episodic. North American animation tends to be more episodic.

2. Anime tends to have well defined series. Most anime averages about 12 episodes total. This holds true no matter how popular a series is, with very few ever seeing a second season. This means the pacing for the overall narrative is much more quickly paced.

3. Most North American animation that I've seen tends to be comedic and aimed towards being family friendly. Very seldom will a North American animation approach subjects like rape, genocide, infidelity, and the like.

I don't know how to describe it but there's something about most anime that rubs me the wrong way. I like some, like Akira/Ninja Scroll, but most just turns me right off.

One other thing Japanese has going for it is Hentai. Not even trying to be funny, it's a shame NA does not produce their version of it... in fact I'm not certain why it doesn't exist, they is definitely an untapped market, it could make a lot of cash.

I also have a hard time getting into modern Anime, the vast majority of it to me seems so cookie cutter. Show me 10 random screen shots of modern anime and I might assume it was all the same show.

I've been getting into Grappler Baki a bit lately, it's a martial arts style show witch centres around extremely brutal sanctioned MMA tournaments. Similar appeal as DBZ I'd say.

I'll disagree. Throughout history, pornography has been the largest contributor to the acceptance new forms of media. Animation was invented about 60 years before the very first films of the 1890s. It's misguided to believe that Christianity has been able to hold the leash so tight over animation for nearly 200 years but opened the floodgates for the movie industry which pornography had TREMENDOUS success in until the late 1990s.



To answer Steven's question; I think its a Japanese cultural zeitgeist. It generally takes a larger and more talented crew to create animated pornography than to point a camera at two people fucking. The reason for the popularity of animated pornography in Japan has mostly do to Japan's stricter censorship laws. At the turn of the 20th century it was illegal to produce pornographic photographs and film in Japan. However, it wasn't illegal to create pornographic art or novels.

This remained until after WWII when Japan had a large cultural movement where everything "western" was in fashion. This of course included the Playboy magazines carried by many American soldiers at the time. Japan's first legal pornographic films weren't made until the 1960s. It's still "technically" illegal to show genitalia in pornography in Japan.

Long story short, decades of written and drawn porn being the only legal access to pornography has caused Japan's animated pornography to be considered culturally "normal." If it wasn't for Taisho Period censorship laws, Japan's pornography scene would most likely be more in line with the rest of the first world nations.

I think you might be a bit disillusioned here DB. (We all know that's par for the course for you though, so don't sweat it) Christianity has no control over the media, beyond demographic sensibilities. I think it's a combination of what Tenbo said, and the fact that there is no proven market. Larger studios in NA that are capable of producing a series are already tied to a money making formula (even bigger companies giving them money to produce), similar to the games industry.

Tech is getting pretty good for 2d animation in NA... I've got the tech. Maybe adult features might be a future avene I might wanna walk down, and as a Christian myself, I'm certainly not worried about the Christians stopping me, sorry DB but the idea Christians are going to interrupt production is laughable.

They don't come right out and say it usually but they censor for reasons like immorality or decency. Who's sense of morality or decency? Christians, because they dominate the US. A good example is how Walmart refused to sell stuff it deemed indecent, according to the owners faith. Why not? If they're the only reason it's being done then it's directly their fault, right? Remember these are the people who would go on camera and smash CDs, comics, ect that they didn't like. They are bullies.

Walmart changed its policies. They used to refuse to sell anything they deemed explicit unless a "clean" version was released. It's their right to do so but it prevented a lot of creative people from selling their stuff because Walmart is(was?) the biggest retailer. In rural areas it's sometimes the only store for miles.

You really are underestimating the influence and power the religious right had in the US. They're desperate to get it back and sadly under Trump they may get their wish.

You need to talk to the old man outside the dungeon at night. He'll say something about a curse then you fight skeletron. He can be annoying but you can keep spawning him each night until you beat him. Once he's dead the guardians will stop violating you.

Okay it worked, I'm in the dungeon now. I'm only at 2 percent corruption, how do I get that higher, and what does it even mean? I've probly spent 20-30 hours and have crisscrossed pretty much the whole map I figure it should be higher.

Corruption isn't really something you want. It has annoying enemies and it can slowly spread to other biomes. Yours might be blocked by something it can't spread to. If you want it to spread(I think there's an achievement for being high) you can go find the biome and make sure it's bordered by grass/sand/snow. Stuff like stone, iron, clay, ect block it. You can also get corruption seeds and plant a new corruption biome but if you're not careful it could ruin your world, because corrupt biomes are annoying.

If you wanna find the biome just go to each edge of the map. It spawns far from the player spawn, probably opposite the dungeon. You can't miss it. Everything is purple, flying enemies, tunneling worms and huge pits.



Btw about the original topic- I don't really like a lot of modern animation because it all seems too polished and fake. I really like some of the retro stuff-

He Man himself looks super corny but something about the way everything else looks really appeals to me. I dunno if it's hand drawn but it gives the impression that it is. Maybe it's just nostalgia but either way you gotta appreciate the effort that went into making those old shows.
