If we're dropping TMNT, I'd prefer Final Fight due to its clasicness

Re: 2013 Retro Uprising Gaming Champ
I still don't get why TMNT should be dropped. Why not add Dungeon Magic as a new category of Action/RPG or something and just keep them both?

I like Final Fight as a game Jack, but I would raise an concern on this one because it is fairly easy to farm. Fun game, but I could see where the top scorer would just be the one who can (legally) farm the most in the timer. That's not a whole lot of fun to me.

Trying to limit it to one game per genre. 1) The goal of the contest is to find who is the best over all gamer, not the best brawler and decent over all player. 2) I think more people will compete if there are fewer games.
More genres can be added but only one game per genre.

I don't agree, fewer games mean a higher concentration of huge scores, I'm worried this may act as a diturrent. (sp.. seriously someone correct me, dictionary.com is no help) People might only get a tenth of the high-score, and not want to bother investing the time to try and get higher. I think last year was a decent amount of games.

I agree with Essie on this. I think a few more games is better than less. I think less games will make people play less because they might be discouraged and think they have no chance if someone sets very good scores in a few games and thus seemingly sews up the competition. More games mean more people can do well because the scores are spread out between more games.

Maybe it's just my own view, but I see a game like Dungeons and Dragon (from the 2012 contest) or Dungeon Magic in a different genre from something like TMNT. They both are side-scrollers, but with the addition of magic and strategy, it creates a different game play experience to me. Maybe I'm off there. To me, it would be like not allowing Donkey Kong because Tron is already in.

Tnat might be a good idea. That way you could also really diversify within the genre. For example, we could have a bullet hell game, and then another shooter that is different (i.e. like a side scroller or something). That could add variety and encourage more people to play.

I like your idea very much. I'll reply again in a bit in more detail, but I like alot of the ones you added and I think this will encourage more competition.

Re: 2013 Retro Uprising Gaming Champ
I think we should try to include lots of lesser known games, we don't want the final results for games essentially written in stone as soon as they are announced. For example, as great a competition game as DK is, if we selected it it's basically free points for Mcmanus. Not to say that we need to only take games that haven't been contested in the past, but we should be conscious of giving people too big of an advantage to start with.

Going by elimination, I say we remove Magical Crystals - Arcade/Coin-Op which was in a recent MARP contest (last year?)

Re: 2013 Retro Uprising Gaming Champ
How about we have a "Champ's choice" game that gets chosen by last years winner?
All kidding aside, I have to agree with SC in that we should be using lesser known games. I hate when contests have games that have already been beaten to death i.e DK, street fighters etc etc
The less advantage we give before the contest begins, the better the competition.
Is 28 games too many?

I think that's an acceptable amount, I think we will get more participation this year too.

Re: 2013 Retro Uprising Gaming Champ
Ok fair enough. It will force people (me) to play earlier if they wish to have a shot. No way I could learn that many games in a couple of months.

Why do you think these are too short? I thought some of these games looped? AVP has many levels. I think it's the average length for a beat-em-up.
Also, I think Trick Trap loops. That would keep the challenge going.
I believe Rush 'n' Attack loops as well. Am I misunderstanding your post?

I'm not familiar with this one, but why would something being hard disqualify it?

Puzzle - already have drop, action puzzle, trivia, strategy, and maze that are all slightly similar to this.
|
Personally, I think Puzzle games are such a hiue genre, it wouldn't hurt having a couple that are different from each other.

Out Run - Arcade/Coin-Op several people have beat it but no one here is close to the world record. Not sure if that means this is good or bad for this contest. Someone else more familiar with the score system have an opinion?
|
To get close to the world record you have to use a glitch which involves going offroad but keeping max speed up. For this reason I dont think it should be in the contest

Re: 2013 Retro Uprising Gaming Champ
On Outrun you have to abuse a glitch where you go offroad and constantly change shift between high and low gear to keep max speed, it's not a good game to go for the world record.

Re: 2013 Retro Uprising Gaming Champ
WB is right about Super Punchout for the SNES, the scores reset after each circuit, It is not a good title for score chasing.
I can also confirm Rush'N Attack does loop after finishing it starting at a harder level each loop. I think it is a good contest game as there is an invisible timer and point pressing can be done but you have to be really careful or you run out of time.

Can anyone confirm if AVP loops? I thought it did, but I might be thinking of ALIENS which definitely does loop.
