In this part of my whole Pirated Games review, I am going to review the pirated game known as Kart Fighter, which is a Mario fighting game that predates the first official Mario (actually Nintendo) fighting game which is Super Smash Bros. Does this game live up to its name or it's just a plain waste of time?
Before I begin, why is the game called
Kart Fighter? It sounds like the Mario characters are going to be punching each other while driving on go-karts to win first place (kinda like
Road Rash, much?). Anyway, let's begin...
REVIEW
Graphics: B-
I'll have to admit, the game looks great. The sprites are made themselves and they look pretty good, and have great (if not decent) animations, but like most pirated games with good graphics, the coloring is kinda poorly done, and there are some height issues like: Why is Mario and Luigi the same height? Why is Toad the same height as everyone else? Why is Bowser the shortest than everyone else? Why is Yoshi taller than his normal height? etc. Despite the graphics being good, it does suffer from lack from originality for the backgrounds.
Examples:
Title & Options = Super Mario Kart (obvious)
Nokonoko's (Koopa's) desert & Donkey's (DK Jr's) cloud levels = Mario & Wario
Yossy's (Yoshi's) mushroom level = Little Nemo: The Dream Master
Anyway like most pirated games I already reviewed and will later be reviewed, seem to have some decent or good looking graphics but suffer in anything else.

Gameplay: D+
The game is just like Street Fighter II... a pretty bad replica of it. Fighting games are generally not meant to be on the NES, and it really shows. It plays the same, but the collision detection is kinda questionable, and the game is much slower. The point of each battle is to defeat the opponent 2 out of 3 times although, why does the CPU have a score? I find that unnecessary. Another annoying thing is the AI is kinda broken, as sometimes it likes to spawn the same special moves over and over again. To make things worse, there is no ending (at least I think), only a plain "Top 8" High-Score screen. To make things MUCH worse, you have to fight Bowser and your clone 3 times to get the high-score screen. It makes me seethe developers of this game as they didn't know what a fighting game and how it works, so they took the popular fighting game Street Fighter II and took the characters from Mario, and just didn't bother to fix and balance the gameplay to actually become very playable. Sadly, I have not much to say about this game. I wish I did, but what more did you expect from pirates? But to be honest, the gameplay is much well done than that of Somari's and Sonic Jam 6's.
Sound: D+
I'll have to admit, Kart Fighter's music isn't so bad compared to Somari's and Sonic Jam 6's. While it doesn't sound so bright, it does sound good for pirate standards. While it does boast some decent music, but the majority of it sounds terrible, though. The sound effects are kinda bland but, what more did you want? Like the gameplay, it's much better than most pirates out there.
NOTE: Sorry for the music being slower than normal, probably taken from NESCafe, i guess

Controls: C-
The controls are not bad for a pirated game, but for a game on a system with controllers that have only A and B buttons (D-Pad, Start, and Select doesn't count) can make things kinda hard to perform special moves (the same problem goes with
Street Fighter II for the Sega Master System). Also, the response can be kinda slow due to the lag that occurs a lot in the game. But other than that, the controls are decent enough.
Replay Value: D+
For people who are looking for a decent pirated game may like this game, and for people who like to know about the first Mario fighting game in existence. Others may want to stay away from this.
Overall: C-
My final words of this game is that I'm actually kind of stunned that this game actually is decent in some way. While it does have it's flaws and quirks, it's actually far from being the garbage that would be like
Somari, and
Sonic Jam 6. To be honest, if someone would improve on the game's mess-ups, then it would actually be an amazing game, but easy come, easy go. Just stick with the
Super Smash Bros. series...
Next Part: Super Mario Land 4 (or Super Mario 4) (uploaded, check it out)
