Could the movies soon have the first African American Spider-Man? If thousands of Twitter users get their way, the star of Sony's upcoming reboot of the franchise will be Donald Glover, best known from his role on NBC's "Community." This weekend the Twitter hashtag "donald4spiderman" became the #3 trending topic in the U.S., and the campaign is still gaining steam.

Why should we change the race of a fictional superhero?
He's been around for years, and the change wouldn't make sense.
Just because a bunch of people on Twitter decide something should change, doesn't mean it should change.

I hate when they change specifics of a character to appeal to the audience. If you don't like the source material too bad, go elsewhere. They did this with I am Legend just so they could throw Will Smith in there.

I really don't like that this will probably come to pass because a bunch of morons petitioned it on twitter. That site needs to die.

You're right, I forgot about Green Lantern's race change. But that was ok in my opinion since the Green Lantern changes everytime he dies. Spidey on the other hand is only one person and that's it.

I wont see it either way. One of the lamest super heroes that has already had too many movies.

Also there are too many super hero movies lately. If a movie (X-Men and Batman in this case) makes very much money then Hollywood just remakes it until it is horribly ruined.

I'd still see it. Unless it looks awesome I won't pay theater prices for it though. I don't care what race an actor is but Spiderman is a dorky white kid, that's his background. Changing that would retarded. It's like making Superman an asian dude.

First off, the Green Lantern you were referring to changed sectors. Spider Man was always meant to stay the same race. Stan Lee did not intend for some idiot to massacre his character in a movie by changing the character's race. It's just not done.

It is done, which is precisely the problem, changes are made due to the Twitter crowd, and they shouldn't.
Characters are made a certain way, because that is what they need to be.
The comic book crowd at the time was mainly nerdy, white high-school students, thus Spider Man is a nerdy, white high-school student.

Why don't they:
Make Super Man Mexican?

Make Batman Brazilian?
(a Brazilian Batman would be cool though)
{Better than that though, would be a Brazilian Wonder Woman}

Make Robin Arabian?

Make Daredevil Iraqi?

Make Captain America Russian?

These are just as reasonable as making Spider Man African-American.
