Retrouprising's Top 20 Nintendo Characters

Since we were young, Nintendo was an icon that forever influenced our childhood
with iconic characters such as Mario, Link and Samus that are still labeled as some
of the greatest characters in all of gaming. But who are the best?

Rules:
1. Minimum 5.
2. Maximum 20.
3. 2nd party characters are fine (Kirby, Pikachu) 3rd party characters aren't (Sonic, Snake).
4. No repeats.

R.O.B. is because of Super Smash Bros, but I grew up on the Game and Watches.
So I'm a little biased.

So you put ROB on your top twenty because of Smash Bros? I'm sorry but that's kind of dumb even if you think he's a good character in that game. Besides Smash Bros he's lame. Do you really think there's no other more deserving Nintendo characters?

Also is Game and Watch an actual character in those old hand helds or is he just a representation of all of them? I seem to remember different looking characters.

I thought about it and I changed it to Alexandra from Eternal Darkness.

And Mr. Game and Watch was the main character in the Game and Watch Gallery games.

I used to play those as a kid, I guess he didn't make an impression on me. I think he's a terrible character but it's your list not mine.

I have a question:
If the game a character is from, was only released on Nintendo, and the characters never appeared in any other games, but the game was developed by a third party developer, would the characters still count?
Here's some information about the game:

Pass your judgment not on whether the game is good or not, but whether or not the game counts.

Wait... Eternal Darkness was developed by Silicon Knights, a third party developer. Why is Eternal Darkness special?

I should have said the character is owned by Nintendo.
Sorry I'm not being clear, Banjo is owned by Rare, by Diddy is owned by Nintendo.

Because I can't use my actual character for that spot (apparently Silicon Knights and Rare are allowed as third party developers, but nothing else)
And Link is just a silent protagonist type, and Banjo is a bear, and is (so lame he's) cool.
