Windows 7

I have an opportunity to purchase Windows 7 for 15 bucks through a deal between Microsoft and the college I work for. This would be for my personal use. I currently run Vista. Is the upgrade worth it?

It's worth fifteen dollars at the least, you can transfer all of your files easily.

It's well worth it Jim. I'm using it right now and i'm amazed at what programs work on it

. It's also a lot cheaper that way instead of shelling out hundreds of dollars

I got it for free at my school... I have no idea why I was dumb enough to take so long to install it. It's been working just fine, and some games that didn't work on vista do work with windows 7 (FFVII). I also installed it on my moms netbook, she loves it. Her computer has some problem that disconnects her from the internet. As in no matter what you do, unless you uninstall the hardware and reinstall it won't work, or restart computer... but after I installed windows 7, although it kinda still happens, it fixes itselft

one more thing... make sure the version you get is the same language as your current vista language... that way you just upgrade and keep your files... not my case (love Mexico... but it's annoying when just because I live here many things are different or incompatible)

I like Windows 7. It's very similar in format to Vista, but they fixed a lot of the bugs.

My mom's computer has a problem. The network adapter in her netbook doesn't work well. Computers have an option to uninstall hardware. That's the great thing about Windows 7. Here's something to think about. Any program that has issues with Vista won't have them with 7.

I'm glad you don't, I could have kept working with vista, although I had many issues with it... they weren't that bad... but I have a lot less issues with windows 7, and I can now play ffVII when I couldn't before... so me like windows 7... although when I had vista I do remember getting very mad at it... just don't remember why

I think a lot of people hate Vista because:
A) They tried to install it onto XP machines that never met the Vista specs.
B) They were scammed by computer manufacturers early on claimed their new computers were "Vista capable" when really the computers barely met the Vista requirements, so they had a bad experience.

B was really rampant when Vista was newly released.

I have had my Vista computer for 3 years now, and I have never once had a blue screen. Also, I haven't noticed the usual performance degradation on it that happen when the operating system gets older.

I heart my Vista =).

The few people I know who have issues with Vista have issues with it because there are some programs that are NOT Vista compatible. What little I played with it, outside of the program compatiblity issues, I liked. But I am LOVING windows 7.

@Fungusman- Notice I said seemingly? If you would've added some details to your post then I wouldn't have to assume now would I? I know of plenty of people who overdo it with their PCs and they expect people to be impressed. Sorry to assume that here but like I said, no other info to go on.

I've had Vista for a couple of years myself, same situation. No blue screens.

I take this as an insult... I'm although I'm still in college I'm in computer systems... why? because I've been using computers since I'm in kindergarten and can't get enough of them. I know I still have a lot to learn, no one can ever master a single discipline, but I believe I can tell whether an operating system on my computer is garbage or decent. I've only recently started using windows 7, but it is way better than vista. It runs a lot more smoothly, many issues I had with vista have disappeared. For one, when I tell my computer to sleep... it actually goes to sleep instead of showing me the sign in user screen. I know it is not the proper term for that screen but I'm to annoyed by your comment to worry about that. Now when I tell my computer to sleep, it goes to sleep. Oh, and the hibernate option doesn't suddenly disappear on me, yeah, disappear. With vista one day I had the option to hibernate, and for the next few days, sometimes months, the options was gone. Even though I looked for it everywhere, and sometimes it would appear in the advanced energy options, it would still disappear. When I say windows 7 is better than vista, I know what I'm talking about. And about the security alerts, yeah they can get annoying, windows 7 still has a couple of annoying security alerts... but the only thing that bothered me about the vista alerts in vista was that they would freeze my computer. I really couldn't care less about the security alerts, but when having to wait 30min for the alert to come up so that I can continue with an installation is just absurd.

Oh, am I'm glad you haven't had problems with vista, unfortunately, that's how it is with software and computers, sometimes they work fine for one person, sometimes they work horribly with another. Which is why I know people that recommend HP computers, but I wouldn't because of hardware issues I've had with them. When many people have problems with something, it usually means something

It wasn't meant as an insult, I'm sure, he was just making a statement based upon the general population of Vista haters, you worked with it and had legitimate issues that weren't the result of stupidity.

I have never had a problem with Vista either. So, my questions remains. Is the upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 worth 15 bucks?

If your computer meets the recommended requirements (not the minimum) then yes, you should upgrade.

If not then you should buy it anyways and give it to a friend or sell it on ebay or give it away as a prize here.

15 bucks is a great price.

My opinion of the Linux vs Windows vs Mac debate.
Windows = best for average home user
Mac = use it if you have to for work or if it you are already more familiar with it and do not plan to ever be more than casual computer user - Internet, email, flash games etc.
Linux = best if you want to get a head start. In another 5 years it will replace Windows in market share and be the best for the average home user. It is not there yet though.

I agree with Seahawk.

I use vLite - Windows Vista configuration tool If you can get it installed, it is very awesome.
