Beat-em' ups!

I decided to do a discussion on Beat-em' ups. I remember growing up and beat-em' ups were everywhere. There was Final Fight from Capcom which was inspired by their Street Fighter Series, then there was Double Dragon and River City Ransom from Technos I believe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time from Konami, etc. Well I was just wondering what you guys (or girls) thought of this particular genre that was so huge in the 80's and 90's and why their popularity has gone down in the recent years. Oh yeah, and any particular Beat-em' up favorites you people remember? Where did the Beat-em' ups go, I sure miss them.

Well there are hack n' slash games like "Spartan: Total Warrior" and I think they are somewhat similar.

Yeah, Hack n' Slash is a pretty close match but its just not the same

I spent at least 3 years of my life doing nothing but playing Ninja Turtles 2 for NES. Best game ever made.

And don't even get me started on co-op mode!!!

River City Ransom is by far my favorite Beat em up.
Double dragon was ok, final fight was good too but RCR smokes them.

Another one I liked was Fighting Force for Ps1(and N64,saturn,PC) it didn't have much depth but the beat em up part was fun as hell. Another good beat em up for next gen is the Die Hard one, I forget the exact title but it was in the arcades first.

Die Hard Arcade. Phenomenal co-op arcade game. Never got around to playing the PSX port, but I am willing to bet that it is pretty fun.

Not one of my favorite genres but I would pick Battletoads.

Why Battletoads you ask? The game was challenging. The level structure was diverse (remember descending the rope and the speed bikes?). It had a decent plot for it's day with cut scenes.

Also not one of my favorite genres but every once in awhile when you just want to mindlessly hit stuff they can hit the spot. I love Technos (Double Dragon, River City, Riki Kunio, Ice Ice Hockey, Dodge Ball, Nintendo World Cup, Street Basketball, Crash 'n the Boys). And Battletoads, Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, Black Tiger, TMNT and GI Joe are also all great.
