As the internet makes everyone’s voices heard more and more, whether it be through comment systems, forums, or social media sites, it’s interesting to see the different patterns that develop. One I’ve taken note of in the last couple of years is the inaccuracies of our memories. Yes, I say “our” because I’ve fallen into this same trap from time to time just like everyone has.

Most people have games they remember loving long ago, but haven’t played in years. It can be a sad truth to find out that games you use to love don’t stand the test of time, but it can also be fascinating to see just how different reality is from our aged memories.

This curiosity is one of the motivations behind our Friday Old Games series. Sometimes we battle against our own memories as I did when reviewing Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi; a game my memories would have me believe is fantastic, but in reality is a pretty shoddy licensed game. Other times, we want to set the record straight on games like Goldeneye that have been put on a pedestal for merits that are no longer relevant today.

I dont agree with this at all, just because you don't have the same passion for super mario bros. you did when you first unwrapped it, doesn't mean you didn't feel that way back then.
I know for sure because from time to time I will play and old game, and will instantly be taken back to how it felt when i was a kid, no mistaking it.

I've been playing all the games I remember playing as a kid and I still find them highly enjoyable and entertaining. I'm with you two on this one. This article doesn't apply to retro gamers.

In my opinion, modern games can be much more fun than the old ones and that you're in denial if you say any one NES game is flawless. But the thing is, newer games just aren't going to take the years as well. In fifteen years Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be replaced and most people will forget about it, but the old games never seem to go away. They stand in a giant library next to a sign that says "Start here", and what else is there that's like them? Obviously, behind them sits the games of even older consoles, but they too seem to be in swarms, destroying each others odds of being played.

If I had to guess, I'd say more people play Super Mario Bros. than Halo 2 right about now.

Yeah, modern games do have more to offer than the retro games we grew up with. But like you said, modern games get replaced by the newer and better games up ahead.

Another problem with modern games is how they're being developed with online multiplayer in mind. Once the servers are shut down the game will be basically dead, even if you still love it.

Yep, Xbox Live service for the original Xbox went down for good last night.

"=/=" = "Does not equal". But normally it's just a small "=" sign with a slash in it, Tenser made it look like it was two "=" signs.

Crystalis? Flawless? I think a fault right off the bat is that blasted date that you can't skip every time you start the game.
