Star Fox Assault
STAR FOX ASSAULT
BY Chuck Norris
Ah good ol' Star Fox, one of my favorite Nintendo classics... It had everything, cool characters, good difficulty levels, shooting, explosions the whole nine yards. Star Fox Assault however... falls on it's face.
[Note: This description is from memory and I'm playing right now as well to recollect the story as I haven't played in at least a year]
Star Fox Assault takes place a year after Star Fox Adventures, Peppy Hare having retired from the team, Falco Lombardi returned to Star Fox after his absence in Adventures, Krystal [from Adventures] now took Peppy's spot on the team. Andrew Oikonny [From 64] has now taken over for his dead uncle Andross aga inst team Star Fox...Andrew gets killed in the first mission and upon his defeat an Aparoid appears, it's in the form of some creepy moth. Fox defeats it and he finds the core to the Aparoid, but it gets stolen by Pigma Dengar [also from 64] and Fox has to get it back whilst fighting off the Aparoid invasion and has to save Corneria from the invasion.
Star Fox Assault is split up into three mission types; Air, On Foot, Landmaster. The missions on Air are pretty self explanatory , you fly around in the Arwing, most of them are on rails flight missions. Next the on foot missions are also self explanatory, they're not on rails missions, they're free roaming missions where you run around shooting everything in your path to oblivion and completing objectives. Landmaster missions are actually compiled with the on foot missions but you drive the Landmaster tank which is really cool actually.
Sadly, this game has many flaws in it, one gripe I have with the game; On-Foot missions, they feel clunky and undone, the controls are very sloppy on foot. Next; the difficulty, now there are 3 levels of difficulty; Bronze (Easy), Silver (Medium) and Gold (Hard) Even on Gold I found the game pretty easy but then again that's just me. Finally the biggest gripe I have with this game; The hours of gameplay; I beat this game within a couple of hours, it's TOO DAMN SHORT !!! I hate games like that, I want a game where there's a good amount of gameplay and it will keep me occupied for a good amount of time.
There is some good in it though, like the voice acting is top-notch, that's what I loved about 64 and Adventures [which I shall review if nobody beats me to it] Also the music is beautifully composed and it really fits each mission. That and the multiplayer modes, just like Star Fox 64, superb multiplayer. That's about it.
Now my scores....
Graphics 4/5:
Star Fox Assault is another prime example of great graphics, bad gameplay
Sound 4/5:
Like I said before, top-notch voice acting and spectacular music
Difficulty 3/5:
I just found the game too easy, even on Gold but like said before that's me, maybe somebody else found it challenging
Gameplay 2/5:
Sloppy controls, and clunky on foot missions make for a not so enjoyable Star Fox title.
Overall 2.5/5
Star Fox Assault isn't really a bad game but it's not good either, if the development team had spent more time on the on foot missions and maybe included more than 10 missions and maybe went back to the roots of Star Fox and Star Fox 64 and let you choose your own path maybe this game wouldn't be so bad. Assault is more rental worthy than actually going out and blowing money on it even though I did find it in Gamestop for $4.95USD [US Dollars...duh]

Re: Star Fox Assault
I can't believe they replaced Peppy, probably the best team member, with some random character from Adventures. If anything, they should have replaced Slippy.

I just so wanted to hear Peppy say; "Do a barrel roll!"

Re: Star Fox Assault
How could they let Fox sink so low?
At least he redeamed himself in Star Fox: Command.

Re: Star Fox Assault
Yeah Command was superb, even the voices speaking gibberish was actually really cool, just like Star Fox for the SNES.

Re: Star Fox Assault
good review Chuck Norris. I really enjoyed it even though it was too short. my only other complaint is Fox's voice actor sucked.

Re: Star Fox Assault
Yeah his voice actor in 64 was better, I liked Krystal's voice actress...I like British accents, but I'm not a furry, nothing against them though.

That I did not know, did she also voice Krystal in Adventures? I haven't played that game in some time.

Re: Star Fox Assault
Let me check. I'm not sure but she voiced Krystal in Brawl i'm positive of it.
Nope. Estelle Ellis voiced Krystal in Adventures while Alesia Glidewell voiced Krystal in Assault and Brawl.

Re: Star Fox Assault
That whole honeymoon on sauria was hilarious. Fox was even nodding to it when tricky mentioned it. i wonder if nintendo did that whole "not yet" to throw the fans off?

That's what Fan Fiction is for (Which I am proud to say I write!) Even though we all seen it coming.

Re: Star Fox Assault
I can not get into writing straight fan fiction. the closest i get is a note book with mature content if you get my meaning.

Re: Star Fox Assault
There's a reason this game has the word ass in it. Come to think of it, it's an assault on Star Fox all together. I did, however, enjoy doing stunts in multiplayer, such as getting out of the Arwing cockpit in mid flight, taking out my rocket launcher, turning around and blasting any shmuck that tried to get behind me.
But I actually haven't cared much for Star Fox since 64. I was so peeved when I heard about Star Fox 2.
The original is what I grew up with, even if I couldn't play it until I was at least six since the game over screen scared the hell out of me.

Re: Star Fox Assault
I've seen the game over screen so many times on the SNES version, it isn't funny it's hilarious. Assault just proved that fox was better suited for air missions only
