OK, I got that out of the way, now just to be clear I do not think Madden is wimpy.
Midway...one of the best video game companies ever, they brought us amazing video games such as; the Mortal Kombat series, the Cruis'n series, Killer Instinct, Defender, Smash TV, NBA Jam and I could go on and on and on but I will not. Then in 1998 they released NFL Blitz, a football game that took football, kicked it in it's groin and told it; "Man up!"
NFL Blitz is an arcade style type football game that heavily differs from the Madden series, why don't we compare the both shall we?
In Madden there are penalties (Clipping, Intentional Grounding etc.) in NFL Blitz, they say "Nuts to that!" If you want to interfere with a pass, you go right ahead! You can tackle a guy before he gets the pigskin and not get penalized. Also late hits are allowed, that means basically after you tackle a guy you can tackle him again, great stress relief. In Madden only the QB can pass, in Blitz EVERYONE PASSES! ...Well at least wide receivers do, which make for great strategy and confusion of the defense. Also unlike the NFL in Blitz you're allowed to celebrate and showboat all you want, they chucked the rule book out the window
[heh..chucked

Also unlike Madden or the NFL at the matter, the game clock, now in regulation football, each quarter is 15 minutes long and also to get a first down you must run ten yards, well in Blitz it's different, you see in Blitz each quarter is 2 minutes and you must run the ball 30 yards to gain a first down. The commentary is basically the only thing bland I could think of but other than that this game is full high speed action.
Graphics: 4/5
The graphics are pretty much the same on the N64, PS1, and Arcade machines.
Sound: 4/5
Good background music, the players grunt when hit, they go "Yeah Baby!" when they score a touchdown or make a big play, the commentary though is weak.
Challenge: 4/5
With it's arcade style of football it is pretty challenging, although I like playing multiplayer with this game, the game is more fun with a friend.
Overall: 4.5/5
NFL Blitz is a fun football game that anybody can pick up and enjoy whether you like football or not, the controls are solid and so is the gameplay, and it's a great stress reliever as it is fun to run into the guys and keep hitting them.
