Re: difficult games...
I find Castlevanias easy, or at least fun enough to master.
Sweet Home is really, really difficult without a walkthrough.

Sweet Home is a challenge, but Castlevania II is impossible
to complete without a walkthrough of some sort.

Re: difficult games...
Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden were the games I couldn't beat and still can't without a save state.
Another hard game was T.M.N.T. I did beat it but only a couple of times and took me about 2 years to master.
There are other games out there that were hard but the controls sucked so I blame that. Like that bart simpson game where the run button was also your jump button. Makes way more sense to make it a la mario with two buttons.
On the Caslevania II, I managed to beat that one only because other friends told me the 'secrets' on what to do.

I find a challenge in Jet Pac Stan. I will praise you if you beat the score and idolize you forever if you beat the game.

Re: difficult games...
I practiced so many times on that 'dam' level I could do it with barely getting hit back in the day. It was the last level that was hard because it took so long to get there and you hard to farm the scrolls before that one to stand a chance.

Really? A friend and I figured it out when we were kids. Sure it probably took us around eight hours of game play to figure it out but back then those types of situations were commonplace.

I would second that vote and go so far to say that it is humanly impossible to beat that game without cheating.

Re: difficult games...
I figured the pause a whole bunch for extra money in Wonderboy in Monsterland for SMS. I know there were others that us kids figured out but can't recall. Sometimes you just played a game and tried absolutely everything. It was awesome when some little trick did work though.

Tenser, that doesn't help your arguement, that takes away from it.
The only other games I can think of are Zelda and Metal Gear.

I think the big difference in gaming between the adventure games of the 80s and the adventure games of today is that modern games hand you the ending. In an adventure game for the Atari or Nintendo (E.T., Indiana Jones, Adventure, Simon's Quest, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda) you actually have to work for your pat on the back. Instead of "following the yellow brick road" you've got bust your balls actually looking for things and trying to get past a level, even if it means countless game over screens. In the end, I've always felt that a hard earned "Congratulation, this story is happy end!!" after so much pain is more worth the band playing and parade you get in a modern game ending after spending 4 hours on a game you died twice on.
Ah yes, Adventure is a pretty hard game. Classic though.

Re: difficult games...
TMNT was pretty hard with that damn dam but it was doable if you practiced. I think Battletoads and Ghouls and Ghosts are some of the hardest, most brutal games ever made.
I don't remember being stuck on any Castlevania games but I might've read Nintendo power to figure some stuff out, I don't remember. I think my friends and I were like Tensers situation. We just played for hours and hours until we figured things out, it was part of the fun.
I know we figured out the duping secret in FF2(us) on our own. I remember accidentally doing it and scrambling to figure out how I got it to work.

I agree on Battletoads being the hardest game ever made. Is there even anyone alive that has beat this game ?(Without the almighty save states........)

Thanks to both of you. Some people believe that if a game doesn't hold your hand and spoon feed you then it is too difficult. I could write a thesis on the dot com generation and their need for instantaneous gratification.
@DN: E.T. is actually a very easy game if you read the instruction manual. I can beat it in about five minutes on the easy level.

Re: difficult games...
If a game is too easy by design I lose interest very quickly. If a game is easy because I'm just too damn good I can get over it.
Btw I know a few people that beat games like Oblivion while using walkthroughs. I guess it's cool to experience everything possible and do it right but there's no mystery and there's no excitement, at least for me. If I find out something major about a game it ruins it for me. For example-
Had I known that it might've changed my opinion about the game before it even started.

Agreed, I've always found the best way to go into a game is to go into it blindfolded. In fact, a lot of the time I'm a little skeptical about watching youtube clips of a game because I think it might give something away.
But for multiple ending games with like, 20 endings(Clock Tower 3(2us)), I just can't slave away to. I'm not going to spend 70+ hours with trial and error trying to find every single combination just trying to get ending J and K. I might find about half the endings on my own, but I'm only going to do the 2 hour long second level so many times.

Re: difficult games...
ill only use a walkthrough, if ive tried everything and im still stuck. im in total agreeance with the whole discover the game on its own type of thing. I was reading some forums about dragon quest 5 (there was a lock in the game if you were playing on a flash cart, you needed a cheat to bypass the anti piracy lock) and the amount of people requesting the "all stats maxed out" and the "all monsters join you immediately" cheats was dumbfounding. Kids these days.

Re: difficult games...
I rarely use walkthrus unless I had previously beat the game. Trial and error is the path of choice for me. It's part of the challenge to get things on your own. Victory is sweeter after tasting defeat.

Prolly Bagel.
Double Dragon 2 is relatively tough if you don't know what to do and the timings.
