My Xbox's life span
Well, it had to happen sooner or later. My first generation 360, over 3 and a half years old, finally had a problem. No, not the red ring, the driver burned out and will no longer spin the discs.
My question is this. Given the history of the first generation failure rates of the xbox 360, do you think i got my money's worth?
Also, just looking for someone of the opinions, would you pay ~100 to replace the driver, or just pay 200 for an xbox arcade unit and have a newer generation box.

Bummer Jim! Sorry that happened. The first 360 I had burned out after about 6 months, but the next has been fine for something like 4 years (other than a sticking loading tray problem).
I will say this, Microsoft took the system back no questions asked. No receipt needed. I can't say the same thing for Sony when the PS3 stopped playing movies and games after 5 months. Stupid me couldn't find the receipt, so Sony would have charged $200.00 to fix the thing.
As far as 3 1/2 years, I think of it like this: If someone was to go to a movie theatre and see a film once that would be $10.00 on average. If you throw in a drink and popcorn that's at least another $10.00-$15.00. That means it's a cost of around $25.00 for 2 hours of entertainment. If you see only 4 movies a year that would be $100.00 for just 8 hours of entertainment. If you did this for 4 years, that would be $400.00 for 32 hours of fun. I have a feeling that you have played your 360 for more than 32 hours in in 3 1/2 years. I hope that helps.

Re: My Xbox's life span
i already have a wii...i like some of the games on it, mario galaxy, punchout, zelda, but to be honest, i just can't get that into it. there will always be titles on it that i have to play, like new smb wii, and galaxy 2, and others that peak my curiousity, like mad world, but i just really, really enjoy the 360.
i went ahead and bought an arcade unit, i'm back in business.

Really? That's a bummer. I can't complain about Microsoft at all in this area, but I have no love for Sony's customer service.

Is it worth it, really?
As I stood in line at a game store:
My daughter tried the Wii which was out on display
I looked over at her to get the 'eyes have it' yay or nay,
she back over at me in silent dismay
at that point I wasn't sure what she might say
Later she said the controller was lame,
but obviously you do not feel the same
About this new system to me yet a mystery
please tell me of your experienced Wii history.

As for me, I really enjoy the Wii Joe. It will never replace all my other systems, (I tend to be a completist anyway) but it's a nice addition. In my personal experience, I find I don't buy as many games for the Wii as I do for 360 or other systems, but I find that I get more hours of fun out of the Wii games because of the interactivity.
Wii is fabulous for parties, dates (awesome for this in fact), and other social gatherings because you can get several people (or another one) playing in a party game, and everyone has a good time getting into it.
Also, I was always one of those people that used to watch the old Nintendo Power Glove commercials, and think that it would be amazing playing Castlevania and being in control of every move. In reality I don't think that lived up to the hype, but I think the Wii is that idea fully realized. I have a lot of fun with it.

Re: My Xbox's life span
what bagel said summerizes most of what i like about it, in reality though i really prefer old games. wii has a "homebrew channel" witch unlocks all the potential old shcool gaming i could ever want with a simple download. and as far as new games go, i like nintendo's style more than 360 or ps3.

Re: My Xbox's life span
The major selling point for the Wii is it's focus on old school gaming . That and lets all be serious here, Nintendo is simply the pinnacle of game production.

Re: My Xbox's life span
Indeed to you both. Nintendo has by far the best track record for producing quality 1st Party Games. I think the only other system makers that even come close are Sega and SNK, but Nintendo almost never makes a bad (in house) game. I guess that's why they are still producing systems, and Sega and SNK are not.

SNK?
Anyways, yes the Wii is the best. I love playing with friends online with Brawl or Kart (anyone want to just shoot me a pm, Bagel? Tenser?) Mine has been collecting dust cuz I haven't bought anything for it for awhile, but after this new year a lot of games I want finally come out. (Preording Tatsunoko vs Capcom doods)

Tatsunoko Vs Capcom is fun for a while, but I got pretty bored of it pretty fast honestly. 3 buttons for a fighter is just not enough.

Yes. They made the Neo Geo as well as many many games for it, such as Metal Slug and Samurai Shodown.

Re: My Xbox's life span
The Wii is cool but it's falling way behind in terms of quality games. Maybe it's ok for people whos main focus is old school games but to non retro gamers over 18 the Wii is a gimmicky joke of a system. Sorry but that's the word on the street.

No one cares what those noobs have to say anyways. Let them go out and stare blankly at their pretty colors. I prefer actual games.

Have you tried out Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World?
It's a great JRPG and I think you'd really enjoy it. I've got over 80 hours put into it already.

I know you're not being totally serious but these noobs make up a huge part of the gaming community regardless of how you feel about it. Let Nintendo have their dedicated fanbase who eat up these almost next gen games, the rest of the people will keep moving forward.
Btw I don't think the Wii is a bad system at all. It's just not comparable to 360 or PS3 and that was intentional. Comparing them is just pointless.

Re: My Xbox's life span
either way, the virtual boy was the worst system nintendo made in the fact that it failed in less than a year. sure. it looks good on paper, but it was in black and red. (they couldnt add color or else the price would have been around $500) it also gave people headaches. if it were not for those problems, it might have done pretty good

Even with the occasional misstep Nintendo is still a powerhouse. I hope this never changes, more diversity benefits us all.

if memory serves, i was drinking and i thought about adding a poll and blah-beee-blah-de-blah-blah-blah. mission failed.
@brawl...yeah, don't forget to mention the complete lack of games for the system. hardware never works if the software sucks.
