It's FOOTBALL not soccer!
Why is it that football, AKA The Beautiful Game, is called soccer in the US? It's called football all over the world exept in the states. So who's right?

Football, or futbol, is right, because it was first. However, I don't see how it's hurting anyone.

In my opinion, the rest of the world is right in this case. I don't know why it even called Football here since it's mostly throwing the ball. I like U.S. football, but it's based on Rugby, so I don't know why it's not just called that or something similar.

it's not really hurting anyone. It's just that I find it annoying when people call it soccer.

Can't really blame anyone if they're used to it, just because the rest of the world says futball shouldn't mean that we should be forbidden to call it soccer if we already know the variation of rugby to be foot ball. I think soccer is kind of catchy.

Re: It's FOOTBALL not soccer!
Because Americans don't care about the rest of the world.
For the record I think Soccer is one of the most boring, overrated sports in the world.

I'd be interested in the history of that, but I doubt it's because we didn't care.

Re: It's FOOTBALL not soccer!
Quote:
The British invented Football, full name Association football, the term football is the formal name while soccer is its nickname that was created by the English inorder to distinguish it from rugby football. Soccer became a shortened reference to the word asSOCiation football. Therefore, Football's nickname soccer is often used to refer to football in countries where another form of football exist...example..
America = Gridiron (american football)
Australia = Aussie Rules (australian football)
|
There you go. So the US just uses it's nickname so it's not confused with our sport, Gridiron Football.

There's your answer.
You know, that never bothered me as much as when I heard people say "PIN number" and "ATM machine".

Nice Wikipedia info, but if it was for the sole purpose of not confusing people, why not just call it gridiron football and football as football?

It's probably still too close. Having two different sports with the same root isn't efficient.

Bing! Bing! Bing! we have an agreement, I hate soccer, for the record, you might just want to say it's called soccer in North America... not sure about mexico, but whatever...
I hate it, throughout my life, all the Spring/summer sports kids have played is soccer, and then they have to combine like 3 communities that should each have their own team, to make up baseball teams, in the 10 years that I've played baseball, my community has probably only had a team 3 or 4 times, I usually got put on one of two other communities near us, I probably should not mention any names of the communities.
Baseball is one of North Americas biggest sports, why is everyone joining soccer? and it won't stop, I believe 2 teams have been organized this year in baseball for my age. Yet soccer has so many dang participants that they have to make like 2 teams per community... absolutely lame

@Cameron- Soccer is becoming more popular with parents because it's the new trendy thing. That and most schools are ok with it because it's less liability. When I was in school they banned Football due to the risk of injury, lame.

Well I stated that the USA calls it soccer. Do Canadians call it soccer too? I don't know too much about Canada other than it's cold and people speak French. Oh and Mexicans call it futbol.

I admit it was a bit snide, but did I not mention that I find it annoying for people to call it soccer? anyways, it was lame that they banned gridiron at your school due to risk of injury.

Why do you find it annoying? Trash cans are called wheelie bins in Australia, should we be offended?

Re: It's FOOTBALL not soccer!
It probably came from this model of trash can:
Wheelie so you could roll them around, but I think it just eventually stuck to every trash can.

I don't understand this sentence. The second part doesn't make sense with the first part, imo at least.
The question was why is it called Soccer. I went to the quickest source and provided the answer. I don't understand how you being annoyed by it being called soccer has anything to do with wikipedia being right.
