Greatest Fighting Franchise
With Marvel vs. Capcom 2 underway, whats your favorite fighting game franchise?
Personally, it was a tough choice between
Soul Calibur, Capcom vs., and Smash Bros., but I chose my childhood favorite; Super Smash Bros.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
I voted Tekken because it's the best fighting game series ever made.
Moved this topic since there's non RU games in the poll.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
I think SNK/King of Fighters sucks to be honest. I never understood why people prefer them over street fighter.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
if you're into complex combos, i think killer instinct was probably the best. I remember spending hours and hours on end playing this game and mastering combos. I can still sit down today and, after a little memory refreshing warm-up, beat the snot out of anyone in vs mode

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
I liked KI but I always thought it was more hype than anything else. Once you learn the combos the game is boring(imo).

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
I liked the combo system in KI and SFII, but I loved the combos in Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side. The system was very fluid and if you could master them, could lead to the infamous Cinekills.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
Soul Caliber definitely. What other 3-D fighting game to you get to use weapons in?
Also, Maxi for the win.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
The only downer for me in Soul Caliber, was there were no fatalities. You have all these characters beating on each other with 9' long swords, but everything was to the K.O. only. It sort of took me out of the game.

Yeah DN I love Soul Caliber as well but ASTAROTH FTW.
@WB- I still remember I had a vivid dream involving one of the stages from EC. Weird I know but it is what it is.

That's pretty cool. Do you remember which stage? As much as I like the game, I have never had an EC dream.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
I wasn't that into EC so I can't say really. I know it had an opening in the background and some water. It's been years so my memory is foggy. I seem to remember a cinematic fatality involving a trident but I could be thinking of something else.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
Ill have to roll with a tie between Tekken and Street Fighter. Street Fighter kind of paved the way for all of theses other fighting games. You can see the influences from that game even know. Tekken however took the 3d fighter to another place as well and IMO every 3d fighter is trying to be the new Tekken.
But between those two I'd have to give it to Tekken. 2D fighters are great but 3D fighters are the future and Tekken helped push 3D fighters to that next level of play and strategy.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
Mortal Kombat was revolutionary for it's time. Using digitized graphics and who can forget the fatalities? I remember going to another part of town that just got the game and playing for 6 hours straight on one coin killing everyone because I had been playing it for 3 months when it first came out. They eventually paid me 2 coins to leave. I checked out the old BBS boards and learned all the moves. Good times.

DB, it kind of sounds like you're describing Trident's stage from EC. The fighting took place on a beach (of sorts) with waves crashing and the domed city of Atlantis in the background. Also, Trident did have a finishing move that involved...well...a trident.

Steven, there was a level with a large industrial fan in the background. It was the stage of Jonathan Blade, a cop from the future. And you're right, the fan was the stage fatality and supplied a (very satisfying) grinding sound when an opponent was thrown into it.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
Yeah, it's true. Little bones would fly out of the fan. Gamenguru and I killed each other many a time on both of those stages. Good times!
Also, the Sega CD sequel to EC is the only one to play. Additional Overkills were added to every stage too, so there were two ways to go. On Trident's stage there was one where fish would jump out of the water and devour the opponent, and another where a vine would grow out of the water and choke the poor little fella.

Re: Greatest Fighting Franchise
Super Smash Bros. it breaks the blood and gore of the typical fighter game.
Characters I know and love (exept Sonic and Snake, whom I both hate).
Breaks the typical way of fighting when it comes to scoring.

Super Smash Bros. is more of a party game than a fighting game though...
