Best free Antivirus software?
Can anyone recommend me some antivirus software. I have AVG free edition and it no longer seems to be getting the job done.

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
Avast - free
Norton - not free
housecall.trendmicro.com - free and online - not a replacement for normal antivirus. Just good when you suspect a problem with your regular antivirus.

Yeah, I mean AVG does some stuff. But I wouldn't be asking if the following wern't true:
1. I have AVG
2. I have a pretty serious virus that I can't get rid of

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
TrakMastaTom, what's the name of the virus? Where did you get it...what site? How did you get it...downloading? What did you download? What are the symptoms?

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
I don't know what it is or where I got it. Actually, it isn't an it I am pretty sure there are several that I got all at one time. I have at least 1 trojan and something that AVG calls a FakeAlert. I don't know if that is an official term, but it constantly tells me I have spyware and asks if it can scan for me, then tries to install an executable file to my computer.
I am doing the HouseCall thing Kong posted as we speak, hopefully it will take care of it.

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
The housecall thing seems to have removed a few things, but I am still getting pop ups. I don't know...it hasn't tried to install the exe for a while. I'm gonna play with my computer a bit more and see how it goes.

Clamwin didn't seem to work. I don't know if this helps, but...

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
yes, this helps but the image is slightly too small to make out the DLL file names. What are the DLL file names and were only these 3 instances found or are there more?

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
lol...I'm willing to bet that TrakMastaTom's contracted that virus from a P2P file-sharing network such as Limewire, Bearshare, or one of the other ones. Also, this definitely doesn't display symptoms of a "virus" of any type. If anything, it's spyware or adware based on the symptoms he's giving us; pop-ups.[br] Posted on: 30 December 2008, 00:04:24_________________________________________________

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
Yeah I just always make that joke when people say they have a virus. From the little I know of TMT I agree that he probably got if from a P2P network or something similar. Those types of things are ripe with bad things.

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
sounds alot like the one i contracted at work awhile back, i got it streaming "thumb candy" a video game documentary.
one thing i can suggest is that you go to your system32 file and check out the "date modified" of its contents anything that has been modified at the suspected time/date, google up and see if its legit or not

If you mean something like a youtube video then that is not where you got it. You can't get viruses from streaming videos unless you installed some weird player to do so (which is a big no no) or you used the outdated asf or asx file types or possibly a real player file.
@TMT I think you have Virtumondo. Google Virtumondo for instructions on removing it. Also see this link http://www.oral8.cn/viruscom/viruscom_37293.html

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
TrakMastaTom, my suggestion/ recommendation is to use a tool called ComboFix. I'll include the link for the instructions. Use at your own risk and please follow directions word for word if you choose to utilize the program. If you need further assistance, please let me know and I will be happy to help you more.

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
I do not have Virtumondo according to a program I ran to remove Virtumondo.
ComboFix intimidates me.
How do I go about really finding out what it is I have? Is there any way to know for sure?

Re: Best free Antivirus software?
It has certainly calmed down, but my AVG does sometimes pop up and tell me I am having issues, and once in a while I get a pop up for a free online RPG and a dating site.
I appreciate all the help, though. It's much better now, and I will continue to use all the things you suggested.[br]Posted on: January 01, 2009, 10:01:29 PM_________________________________________________A pparently I still have a trojan. And now I am curious, I always assumed a trojan was a virus, but apparently it is simply adware. If I put my credit card number into a secure site can it steal my numbers and all that?
