I was never a fan of them to begin with but the recent Golden Globes nominations sealed it for me.

The Dark Knight was only nominated for Heath Ledgers Joker. Obviously he deserved it but it was assumed he'd get nominated anyways. It would've been a crime if they didn't.

The real issue is the rest of The Dark Knight, no nominations? Really? I'm wasn't expecting much but none besides an obvious supporting actor nod? BS.

This just proves how out of touch these award shows are. The Dark Knight is left out over other movies that most people never heard of.
The Reader?
Frost/Nixon?(not even released until the 12th)
Revolutionary Road?
SlumDog millionare?
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.(I heard of this one but I didn't think it would be good)

It's safe to say these awards are very out of touch with the majority of people. It's time they get cancelled and forgotten about.

Btw Batman Begins was snubbed too. Makes sense right? It wasn't a huge success or anything. People didn't love it right?

Well, if they game awards to the majority of people's favorite movie of the year, it would go to some bull with flashy effects and fart jokes. That's what most people are into.

Benjamin Button will probably be awesome. David Fincher has a solid track record (minus Panic Room).

Dark Knight isn't really a Golden Globe or Oscar winning type of film. Stuff like Crash and American Beauty win best picture. It's more a genre thing than "How awesome was that movie?"

Also, I like the Dark Knight a lot, but who do you think deserved an award in that movie other than Heath Ledger? Christian Bale? Please, hardly an exceptional performance. Same goes for all other characters. No real award winning performances there.

I could see Dark Knight getting an award for effects or cinematography, but what do you really expect Dark Knight to get nominated for? Best Picture?

Also, I didn't love Batman Begins. I thought it was very OK.

Yeah I knew that. My point was, what else are they going to mention when introducing him? Cody Banks and Big fat liar weren't popular, Malcom in the Middle was actually well liked.
Of course he was the worst part of that show imo but that's not important.

You've got to remember that movie making is an art form (for the most part). How many times have you been to a museum and looked at a painting labeled a masterpiece and went "Huh" or listened to a song and not understood it or liked it. Unless your in the "artist" circle, it's difficult to know why it is considered great or award worthy.

As for movies and music, if they are entertaining to you then they are serving their purpose. There are plenty of indie films/music that I will probably never have anything to do with that will win tons of awards. I don't know about everyone else but I do not let the fact that a movie/album won an award effect my decision on whether I watch/listen to it.

Movies that are popular make money. In everyone involved's eyes that's probably way better than a tiny statue.

Last year No Country for Old Men won. That was a well recieved movie by pretty much everyone. And I remember when Lord of the Rings 3 won every damn award at the place.

If the most popular movies of 2008 were nominated for Best Picture, Hancock would be on that list. Did you see Hancock? *shudder*

Just because you have never heard of a movie doesn't mean it doesn't belong at awards shows. How do you know that any of the movies you named in your first post aren't fantastic?

Well it is like frost/nixon was just released so how could that be nominated when it has not even been out. Well thats because it is all set up they know who they want out there and what type of movies. They cater to a certain type of crowd and that is not really good. I don't watch or even think of the awards shows. They gave Heath Ledger a oscar nod because everyone was talking about that after he died. If I remember correctly as well they were talking about that before the Dark Knight was even released.

I was going to rant about how retarded these shows are but I give up. If they want to isolate themselves from the general public then more power to them. No wonder they are so hard up for ratings nowdays. Let them have thier little frou frou awards that no one cares about but them.

I liked Schindlers List and American Beauty a lot. I haven't seen No Country for Old Men but I hear good things. I'll see it eventually.

Honestly my favorite movie of this year is the Dark Knight. I've always liked Batman and to me this was awesome. I really liked Batman Begins too, go figure.

I don't pay attention to when I see a movie though. I had to look up 2008 movies to remember what I saw this year. I really didn't see much.
I liked The Happening. A lot of people didn't though.
Actually those two movies are the only ones I remember seeing. I'm sure I saw more but they must've been so lame I blocked it out.
Typing that last sentence reminded me, I saw that George Bush movie. It wasn't very good.

No, it's not "we think". All the critics have seen it. It isn't a guess. They KNOW. If it flops, so what? Lots of great movies flop.

That's besides the point well its good that a few people can watch a movie before anyone else has even heard about it yet and tell everyone that it is Oscar worthy and maybe no one will see it and the Oscars will get the lowest ratings in the history of the show. Then next year its even lower until no one cares about the Oscars, much like I do not care. I have never once said 'oh look this movie won a Oscar', and prompted me to take a second look at it or even rent it or buy it.

That's all good, that just means you aren't the demographic. I myself constantly watch movies because they were nominated for best picture, and I like most of them. I am only trying to make 2 points in this entire thread.

1. A movie not quite being out yet doesn't mean it shouldn't be nominated, because all the critics have seen it already.
2. The Academy Awards do have merit, just not to any of you guys, apparently.

And I also stand by my point that lots of great movies/albums/video games/books flop. A flop doesn't mean it's bad.
