Nintendo Announces Mini NES
The system will have 30 preloaded games and will cost $60. It will be released on November 11.
The list of games included are as follows:
I've gotta say that I'm impressed with Nintendo for resisting the urge to re-release Urban Champion once again.

Does not seem like it will play normal carts. Cool none the less.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
Super excited by this. I think it's a cash grab by Nintendo since the NX isn't getting released until 2017. They need something to bring to the table this Christmas.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
Looks to be an emulator on a flash card inside a replica NES case. No cart slot or expansions. 30 games only. Controllers are NES style but not original NES. I imagine it is running a regular NES emulator so can probably be hacked to play any NES rom.
There are numerous existing ways, both with and without ROMs, to accomplish the same thing, and not limit yourself to just 30 specific games.
Good concept but falls short. For very little additional overhead they could have included the entire NES, SNES, GB, GBC and GBA library. And allow for third party expansion like on the Virtual Console.

Nintendo could have pulled off something like the failed Coleco Chameleon and that would have been a game changer. But instead they just copied the Atari Flashback.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
Yes but they need to look at it from their business perspective. They put the entire library and they've just shot their wad for Virtual Console, and at the same time drastically devaluing their product. Not too mention, I doubt that they still have rights to the entire library, although I don't know what the contracts looked like when devs were trying to secure that seal of approval back then.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
I basically meant a stand alone virtual console. Everything just like VC on Wii except dedicated hardware and no Wii.
Not sure what all systems the VC supports but would not be a major hardware upgrade for the NES Mini to support everything prior to 32X.

The last console the VC supports is N64

Yup, typical of modern Nintendo. If they just made it able to add more games it would've been awesome but nope.

What makes you say the wii needs to be modded? Says in the article that's plug and play.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
One thing I've come to realize about the industry, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, you are going to have droves of complaints. There are as many people out there that complain about games as there is that actually play them.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
If you buy all those games on your Wii U, it is easily over 100 dollars. This is a good deal. I don't think this is falling short. It is what it is.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
The controller alone would be 30 or 40 bucks.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
People like to shoot down attempts like this to justify their decision to not purchase the product, piracy, or both.

I'm only shooting it down because they made it so restricted. Why not have a way to expand it later?

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
Honestly, if it could play cartridges, I'd probably buy it. But I still have an NES and games, so what's the point?

I guess it's also a bargain if you're just looking for a system and a handful of random games. And looking over the list now it does include most of the games that the casual player would probably be looking for.

Re: Nintendo Announces Mini NES
It's not really aimed at people who still own a NES. They're going for nostalgia with this, the people who owned one back in the day and have fond memories of it, and either want one for themselves, or want to share it with their kids. Of course, I expect it to sell well among collectors and younger people curious about the NES, too.
Also, it's cheaper than buying all those games on Virtual Console.
