I'm using a Qanba fighting stick, but when I'm setting controls in MAME, joystick moves always display as "Joy 1 Hat Switch", etc. Is there anyway to get this stick recognized as just a joystick, so I don't have to reassign Up, Down, Left, and Right for every game I play?
The only way that i know of, is to plug both devices in (and yes this may get a little dicey with inputs) but map up to joystick, then click on the binding again and map the secondary device. Then do the same for down, right, left...repeat until all buttons are mapped.

Sorry - i don't think I was totally clear. I've only got 1 device, the fighting stick - it's a joystick with 9 buttons. Every computer I use detects it as a Hat Switch, not a pure joystick. Not been able to find any other solutions via Google. Thanks for the reply, though - much appreciated.
From tab menu if you change it for Input General instead of input this game then press F5 it should save it for all games. You will have to do this once for coin-op and once in a console game in score mode. In console full mode the instructions would be slightly different for each system.
