ECCO the Dolphin, great GEN game, or greatest GEN game?

ECCO the Dolphin - Sega Genesis

This game, RU, this freaking game.

The atmosphere of it all, the challenge, the loneliness of the world around you even though you're surrounded by other sea life. Your pod is gone, and every other being you can communicate with feels sorry for you and feels for you.

It's dark, it's creepy, it's hard.

It's ECCO the Dolphin.

My personal choice for the greatest Sega Genesis game.

It is definetly a fantastic game. I remember when I first saw it, I though, "this game looks dumb..." But then I ended up playing it because a friend let me borrow his Sega and I lent her my SNES. She only had a few games, but I ended up only playing two of them. Sonic Spinball and Ecco. Man was that game challenging and suprisingly fun! However, it's most certainly not for everyone. You either love it or hate it. So due to that, this is a great game, but not the greatest game for the Genesis.

I always thought this was just a level based pseudo platformer with a flashy mascot.

I just played 10 minutes of the game and holy hell was I wrong. I dunno about best, but that was easily the most intense mental experience I ever had with a Genesis game.

Voting no because the final stage has got to be one of the most un-fun stages ever designed in the history of video games.

It only lasts about 6 minutes. Not too long. Some of the earlier levels last longer simply because you get lost, or confused as to what to do.

Voting no just because of one stage is kind of wrong, SH. :P Not going to say you're wrong for voting no, but. . .

I was really not a fan of Ecco, I tried it and just disliked it. I prefered Sonic 3D Blast over it.

Odd. How do you prefer Sonic 3D Blast over Ecco, when they're two completely different styles of gameplay? :P

Simple. If I had to make a list of games I'd prefer to play Sonic 3D Blast (another game I dislike) over Ecco.

Still. Suppose it's an acquired taste, but you have to admit that at least the music and atmosphere is great.

I've never understood what was going on in Ecco, why it was popular or what you were supposed to be doing.

I've tried the first stage several times and never got anywhere.

I just watched a couple minutes of a video of game play and I still don't get it. But it shares some sound effects with Starflight which is cool.

For dark creepy genesis games with atmosphere and feels, I think both Immortal and Out of This World blow Ecco out of the water.

Immortal is definitely big on the grim element, but I think both of those games have too much of an action element that drowns out the creepiness.

ECCO was creepy because you were alone.
That was the whole premise of the game, your pod was kidnapped by The Vortex and you travel the seas (and other, nondescript places -nudge nudge) to figure out what happened.
Sure you had other sea life to talk to but if you understand the closeness between dolphins in a pod, it becomes that much more depressing and creepy.
