Current events!
This is a topic for all those little news stories that you didn't wanna make a whole topic about. I'll start-
CIA chief Petraeus resigns over affair - CNN.com
I hate hearing about stuff like this. So he had an affair, how does that effect his job? They say he was being investigated to see if his relationship caused any conflict of interest but he wasn't being investigated for any wrong doing. From some accounts he had an affair with his biographer, so no one related to his job and someone who already had insider access to his info. I don't see the big deal. Looks like they're just trying to save face because for some people this would be a scandal.
For anyone living under a rock General Petraeus is a four star general and was a pretty big deal in the Iraq/Afganistan wars. Once he retired he became the director of the CIA.

Re: Current events!
Apparently Romney cancelled all his campaigns credit cards after the election, forcing them to pay for their hotels out of pocket. This is all speculation, and i don't know if it's true or if it was a misunderstanding or whatever, but if it is true you should count your lucky stars that he lost the election.

Re: Current events!
@Wolf- I already have no hope about that when I get old.
@Steven- I wouldn't put it past Romney to do something like that, he's just incredibly out of touch with reality. The guy is worth billions, he can foot the bill. He also had hundreds of millions donated to his campaign from all kinds of ultra rich people like the Koch bros.

Extremist calls for destruction of Egyptian antiquities - CNN.com
Quote:
Morgan Al-Gohary, a jihadi sheikh with a history of radicalism, appeared on the private Egyptian TV channel Dream TV 2 Saturday evening and declared that if he and his ilk ever came to power, they would not hesitate to destroy the Sphinx and the pyramids.
He's no stranger to the notion of vandalizing ancient artifacts, boasting to the show's host, Wael Al-Abrashi, that while in Afghanistan, he took part along with the Taliban in the demolition of the Bamyan Buddhas in March 2001.
|
Quote:
|
Everything, if it is a pagan statue or idol, that is worshiped or suspected to be worshipped, or is worshipped by one person on Earth, must be destroyed. We, or someone else, must destroy it."
|
Obviously this guy is nuts and won't be elected to any position of power but other people share this viewpoint. If Egypt gets a hardcore islamist into power they could enforce sharia law and do this without a second thought. The Sphinx is the oldest monument of it's kind in the world, about 2k years before islam was even thought up, and the Giza Pyramid is considered one of the seven wonders of the world. To destroy them because someone might worship them is beyond ridiculous. This is the kind of thing I think we should go to war over instead of meaningless squabbles about land or oil.

Re: Current events!
Everything that is suspected to be worshiped by at least one person should be destroyed?
I suspect more than one person worships the Earth.
Easy solution, we should all start worshiping him.

Re: Current events!
Well he did say idol or statue so that rules out the earth or any person. Maybe they should destroy Mecca first, people worship that site obsessively.

Law banning gay 'conversion therapy' put on hold by judge - CNN.com
So the issue is banning those "pray the gay away" therapies but that's not why I'm posting this. I'm posting it because of what kind of stuff they do at those sessions-
Quote:
|
The therapy techniques described in that lawsuit included having participants strip naked in group sessions, cuddling and intimate holding of others of the same sex, violently beating an effigy of their mothers with a tennis racket, visiting bath houses "in order to be nude with father figures," and being "subjected to ridicule as 'faggots' and 'homos' in mock locker room scenarios."
|
If it wasn't so dangerous and sad it would be hilarious.

Re: Current events!
Speaking of Takei I follow him on FB because he's(or the people he pays) are funny. If you look at the comments of his pictures there's lots of people bashing gays and ranting at him. It always makes me wonder how someone can follow the FB of a person they find disgusting, what's that about?

I don't know if I'd call that trolling. These people seem sincere about their homophobia and they are using their real names.
In those first couple of pictures he looks like bad santa if he was sober, must be the eyebrows.

Jim:
If I'm not mistaken, these two things go together, if you take my meaning.
WHEN I read this I got a horrible feeling of deja vu, but as the article states the severity of this quake is less than last year's event.
Still, any quake is serious and I think people in Japan have suffered enough already.

Re: Current events!
I was at a Japanese community Xmas party yesterday, and this latest earthquake was pretty much shrugged off. The big 'fukushima' earthquake/tsunami was awful and devastating, but this one was apparently run-of-the-mill.
When there's an earthquake in Japan the TV stations all show tsunami warnings. There's sea defences, lots of structurally sound buildings, and everyone knows what to do. Earthquakes are often felt - you'll hear the kids say "jishin! jishin!" which means earthquake - but unless they start showing buildings collapsing on the news there's generally little cause for concern.

Are you saying he's your buddy?
Too bad no one reported that coward before he selfishly took innocent lives. If your life sucks that bad just kill yourself and spare the rest of us. If I believed in hell I'd pray for him to rot there.
