Sony has announced a new crossover fighting game for the PS3, and
it looks suspiciously like Super Smash Bros. I was wondering what
do you guys think of how it looks...

The producers of Gametrailers are saying it's a bit different, but
it still has some similarities to SSB.

Re: Playstation All-Stars: Sony's New Fighting Game
It's not "a bit different" it's smash bros with sony characters and levels. I wish they'd just be honest about it but I guess they have to pretend to avoid having to pay nintendo.
Re: Playstation All-Stars: Sony's New Fighting Game
Pfft, both Sony and Nintendo are small time:

But it's not exactly the same as SSB.
Instead of trying to knock your opponents out of the stage, you build up a power meter at the bottom of the screen by damaging opponents and then collecting the orbs that pop up afterwards. Once you have enough power, then you can defeat an opponent.
It's conceptually similar to Smash Bros, but remember, Smash Bros isn't the first game of its kind, as Steve so kindly showed to the class.
Re: Playstation All-Stars: Sony's New Fighting Game
Pretty sure SSB had items, ring outs, and knockback proportionate to the
damage you have. But that game Steve showed does have similar elements to
SSB no doubt. The Sony game has more glaring similarities to SSB then SSB
has to the River City Ransom esque battle royale.
Also, is it me or do all the levels and fighting look really bland in
the Sony game, I mean, you can only kill with supers and the stages are
enclosed boxes that you have little room to get around in.
Re: Playstation All-Stars: Sony's New Fighting Game
Well this sony game is about as close to smash bros as you can get without a lawsuit. That game steven posted is the real deal. I was gonna say these smash bros games need more than just 4 players and that old school game proved it. Imagine that kind of game with online multiplayer? I'd be on that all the time, win or lose.
Btw how come no one told me about Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu?

The one I posted is a homebrew based on the Famicom game. The Famicom game only supported 4 players and wasn't quite as insane, still a really awesome game though.
Re: Playstation All-Stars: Sony's New Fighting Game
@steven- I never heard of the famicom version either. I'm just surprised that this is the first I'm seeing of it.
@Tails- Well maybe if you showed me more than crappy anime based games I'd give you different answers. This game looks like river city ransom and I've mentioned how much I like that before.

It's quite early in development. It'll likely be refined some.
I think too many people are mildly upset about it.
It's a similar game that is clearly inspired by SSB, but it has Sony characters.
It could be great like SSB, good like Melee, or okay like Brawl.
I wonder what characters they're going to add from this point on. I'm guessing they'll add Big Boss, Solid Snake or Old Snake, if they do third party characters like Brawl did.
Of course, since this is a retro gaming site, I'm not expecting many people here to talk about how it might be fun.
Re: Playstation All-Stars: Sony's New Fighting Game
I never realized how inferior the Sony roster of characters was until this. The irony is that it will have better online features then smash bros.
My Sony time line looks like this for anyone interestted:
PSX era : "Wow these guys are cool, think I'll buy their discman and headphones"
PS2 era : "Sure do love my Minidisc player and Sony VAIO"
PS3 era : [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGzrL8J0t-c"]Merzbow - Minus Zero - YouTube[/ame]

We've yet to see how it's maturely developing, and the hype is probably no where near it's maximum potential.
One aspect, be it minor, I admit, that it probably won't live up to SSB is audio though. Really, how many songs can you recall from Sony franchises that would be good for this kind of game? How does that number stack up to tunes from Nintendo games? I realize that this is a small and petty sort of thing, but it stands out in terms of source dependency for me. Perhaps they can immortalize some themes with this game.

Reason: Found more franchises.

Quick! Name 30 songs! (then again, I've barely played any of these... It would make sense that I don't see it where others would)
Re: Playstation All-Stars: Sony's New Fighting Game
Most of the series I posted are RPG's, and those are loaded with symphonic themes fitting both action sequences, comedic sequences, etc.
Then the action ones - well, those are self explanatory.
"The Opened Way" from Shadow of the Colossus is an excellent battle theme: Shadow of the Colossus OST, T08: The Opened Way ~Battle with the Colossus~ - YouTube
Perfect for a slow-paced romp on the back of a Colossus while fighting Sweet Tooth, Kratos, and Mael Radec.
Then there's also various music from Rogue Galaxy, namely Le Marie Glennecia, which would go perfect for a story sequence involving, say, Kratos and another Sony character, maybe Jaster, duking it out while stuff explodes in the background. Or just a sad / epic slow motion scene:

I can keep going if you want.

Nah, I'm not actually challenging it. You seem to know much more about it than I do, and it would be foolish of me to do so anyways. Like I said, it's a minor thing, but it was something I expected to show if one were actually to go over it when the final product is done.

I know that both of these series have become pretty cross-platform at this point, but what I'm hoping to see is some of this:
Re: Playstation All-Stars: Sony's New Fighting Game
So the characters we know are in the game:
-Kratos
-Parappa the Rappa
-Sweet Tooth
-Fat Princess
-Mael Radec
Other Sony exclusive characters:
-Nathan Drake
-Ratchet and Clank
-Jak and Dakster
-Sackboy
-some character from Mod Nation Racers
-Crash Bandicoot
-Cole from iNFAMOUS
-Maybe Ico and/or Wander
-Nathan Hale
-Selvaria Bles
-Spyro
-Any number of Final Fantasy characters from 7,8,9,10 and 12
-Gitaroo Man
Characters from Sony games that have appeared on other consoles(games that were exclusive or side games on handhelds):
-Dante
-Sora/Riku
-Resident Evil 1 and 3 characters
-Lara Croft
I'm sure there are more, I just can't think of any

Judging from that roster, besides Spyro, Bandicoot, and Dante, I don't like any.

You can't count Final Fantasy / Kingdom Hearts characters as Sony exclusives, or Devil May Cry, Lara Croft, Resident Evil (especially not 1 since it was released on DS & GC), because their games weren't made by Sony. Square-enix, Capcom, Crystal Dynamics, Capcom, respectively.

That's why I put Sora, Dante, Croft, and the RE people in the second category. Originally they were from Sony exclusive games. Not necessarily made by Sony, but only available on Sony systems originally(I don't count PC ports)
