Re: Genres (second attempt)
Sectioned? What does that mean?
I call Tetris and Columns and all other similar games Drop games.
Strategy/Turn-Based - Advanced Wars, Venus Wars, Romance of the Three Kingdoms
RPG/Turn-Based - Shining Force
Board/Party Games - Monopoly, Chess, Darts, Mario Party
Matching - Mahjong
Interactive Movie - Space Ace, Dragon's Lair
Casino/Cards - Obvious
Game Show - Family Feud, Jeopardy
Educational - Math Blaster
Detective/Mystery/Espionage/Spy - ??
Horror - ??
Pinball - Crueball, Sonic Spinball
Rhythm - Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero
Paddle/Light Gun/Mouse - Pong, Duck Hunt,
Interactive Fiction - Zork, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
I don't think your simulation examples are good. Budokan, Civilization, F-15 Strike Eagle. Rampart is Strategy/Shooter/Real-Time/Drop/Awesome
Adult - Bubble Bath Babes (it is a clone of Mermaids of Atlantis), Leisure Suit Larry
Managerial - Aerobiz, SimCity, Populus (also sometimes classified as God)
Cyberpunk - Shadowrun (I think this genre is too narrow to be a real genre)

Sure, that is one of my favorite genres. But it is rare. Moai Kun, Lemmings, The Lost Vikings and I think Out of This World and Prince of Persia would be in this category too.

Not sure if Horror, Cyberpunk, and Detective should be genres. They are too general.

Sectioned? What does that mean?

Your normal, manually scrolling platformer that has stages/areas/world/sectors that you must go through in a specific order one at a time and don't return to. SMB1, Alex Kidd, Sonic, etc...

I'd say that rhythm games are unique enough to merit their own genre. Pinball, on the other hand, is really difficult to classify.

If pressed I'd say Rhythem would be Strategy/Action and Pinball could be Strategy/Card & Board

Re: Genres (second attempt)
While technically it could fit any of the three RPG genres there might be enough of these to merit their own genre; RPG/Raising maybe?

Re: Genres (second attempt)
Call me out of the loop here Tenser, but what is it we are actually doing in this thread?
Are we just naming games that are hard to categorize, cause I'm pretty sure you got that down for the most part.

Re: Genres (second attempt)
@Tenser: I agree. Most of the ones in my first post were themes and not genres.
@Tagen: Survival Horror would be a theme and themes should get their own topic.
@Kraemer: Wow all of DDQ is coming back at once. Welcome back. Hope you stay around this time. This topic is for defining genres. The games mentioned should mostly be archetypal examples. Perfect fits.
This is the "second attempt" because the first one turned into 8 pages of off-topic arguing and was locked.
I think rhythm should get it's own genre. And not fall under strategy. What strategy do you use in those games?
Tamagotchi, Dogz, Petz etc might should get their own genre but I am sure that Tenser will say they are simulation or something.
I think pinball might should get it's own or be Sports/Pinball. I know, not much of a sport but it fits there better than other places.
