I've been interested in this game for a while but I'm still on the fence. Someone answer some questions for me?

Is it too late for a total newb to start playing it?
Do you only play versus real people?
If so is the matchmaking balanced enough to assure I don't get slaughtered every match?
It's totally free right? No catches?

You can fight players or bots
You can create custom matches against bots (beginner for newbies)
You can buy champions with either earned points (Influence points) or purchased points (Riot Points) Duly noted each champion has different skins, one example being Olaf (a viking) who has a Brolaf skin
And yes, it's free.

Currently there are four maps, but they will expand it as they go
You collect gold in game to purchase items for your build. Some items do not stack like the Sword of the Occult which does +10 damage to start and adds on 5 damage for each kill and 2 for each assist up to twenty.
Five people max per team

At your base there's a goblin that sells you many different items seperated by Attack, Defense, Mana and Health.
As for the amounts of champions, there are too many to count but some are wickedly awesome

Allow me to clarify League of Legends.

You queue for a game. after a few seconds in queue you get a champion select. you pick someone you like and you are thrown into a 5v5 game.

There is 4 maps technically. 2 are identical besides one looks hallow'een-ey. the other is a 3v3 map that is rather unpopular, the final is a territories style gameplay no one really likes. Summoners Rift is best Rift.

You spawn on your fountain with a handful of gold to buy some initial items. then you head to a lane where Minions spawn. getting the killing blow on a minion grants a small bit of gold. you then go back to base to buy another upgrade then head back out.

sounds simple. but you also have a player opponent in the same lane with the same objective. but hes gonna wanna stop you from making money.
so there is a passive aggressiveness in it most of this 'Laning Phase' until you find an opportune moment to chain up your ablities
(you get 4 character abilities and 2 Summoner abilities) to go for the kill which grants a good chunk of gold, and hes stuck with a death timer for a short time denying him gold.

after about 15 minutes you will have taken down the enemies tower and you are able to start wandering the map helping other lanes take down their towers. by 25 minutes you will be hanging out with other members of you team in order to win Team Fights. where you fight with your teammates against their team in an epic skirmish usually lasting about one minute. should your team win you have good map control as its generally uncontested so you will go take the neutral dragon camp for a nice chunk of gold to every teammate, or simply take out towers in attempt to win the game by ultimately destroying the enemies Nexus.

To answer all your direct questions:
Items are bought during the match. they do not persist between games.
you start level one every match and gain to 18 by the 40minute mark.
games average 20-45 minutes.
The single map is a symmetrical playing field and it is not detrimental at all only playing the one.
Playing games grants IP(Influence Points) which can be spent on Runes and Champions(Runes are basically a spec tree you spend IP for)(Masteries are a spec tree you gain with each Summoner Level(which you gain XP for by playing matches(takes about a month to hit 30(think of hte process to 30 as a tutorial))))
RP is the purchased currency that allows vanity skins, no real affect on gameplay.
There are currently 101 playable characters in the game. they are all balanced and usable. which really is a fantastic feat.

That said, I highly recommend the game as its a polished, fun, lovingly frustrating at times, and is honestly uninviting, the community is kinda harsh to newcomers, but bring a pal or 2 and youll learn the ropes quickly.

Reason peopel are so vicious is simply because you can single handedly lose them the game if you play too poorly. also abandoning a game in the middle is a ban-able offense. so make sure youre not obligated for an hour before queueing XD

I played this briefly at the start of 2011, but couldnt get into it enough to play it seriously. Not my type of game unfortunately.

We had a college orientation session yesterday in one of the classrooms, where a large group of us were being spoken to about "wellness". I forget the context, but the speaker eventually asked how many students played League of Legends. In a room of 60 or so people, about 1/3rd of our hands shot up.

People are pretty nerdy here. This is comforting to me.

Anyways, I probably won't be playing for a little while longer, but my username should be "cheffdonty".

@Extrien , To clarify it a little more 3v3 Twisted Treeline is Underrated BUT NOT unpopular. 3v3 is mainly for Lvl 30 Champs dueling it out.
@Dudebro , Don't be intimidated, We all had to start the game at one point. Plus, W/L ratio doesn't count against you till Lvl 30 and it takes a while to get there.
