laptop help

so, im helping a friend with a laptop and i cant figure out how to fix it. when you turn it on it brings up the system recovery or start normally, if you start normally nothing happens... so i was like ok, lets restore the factory settings. so i selected system recovery and it brought me to a screen that is blue with a sunburst at the top (its win 7 by the way) and nothing happens... anyone have a clue?

A full reformat may be the only way to fix it at this point if it won't go back to factory specs

ok, i havent reformatted a laptop, would that mean she needs to get a new os disk?

Most of the time on laptops there is no restore disk. It's stored inside the laptop somewhere(recovery partition on the HDD). You access is the same way you do for system restore and factory default.

She will lose everything on there though with a reformat

well, i know she'll lose her stuff but i cant access the recovery, thats my problem...
ive never had this problem on the towers... just with this laptop

Use an ubuntu live cd to boot the computer up and retrieve the data. You don't need to format.

dont care about file, just need to get it working again
