I love my car :/
Ive owned it for a lil over a year but its only been running for 5 months at most lol, ive replaced the engine (i did it my self )it ran fine after that, then now my tranny is messing up, not sure if its the tranny itself or the computer, which has to be replaced as i found out i fried it in the engine change process and the plug for it which fell apart..... *sigh* story of my life lol not selling it either (its a 1998 camaro btw)

Re: I love my car :/
My mom has made a deal with me: if I can fix up her truck, she'll sell it to me for blue book value. I must fix it at my own expense, and I cannot take it into a shop to have them deal with any single problem. Here's the thing, there is a break-line problem, it needs new breaks, there is no battery at all, and the window at the back of the cab needs new insulation, it needs a muffler.
That doesn't explain the problems I will have once it is fixed up. It is terribly inefficient in terms of fuel consumption, even with a muffler it will still be loud enough to set of car alarms in parking garages, it is rear-wheel drive and has no weight in the back, due to the fact that it is a truck.
I also have to find a way around the fact that it would never pass my city's emissions tests to get it licensed.
I do love that truck though, it is very lovable in an odd, junky way.

You realize that's an absolutely horrible deal, right?
First you're not only paying what the truck is worth but you're also paying for repair and your own labor. you're effectively paying much, much more than the truck is even worth.
On top of that, blue book value is what you'd expect a used car lot to sell it for. If you're buying it private party you should only be paying about 80-90% of blue book, especially from your own mother.
Nothing against your mother but she's screwing you over. In the end you could buy the same vehicle for half the cost the one she's trying to sell you. I love my mother dearly but if she offered a deal to me like that I'd tell her to go stick it. Just a warning.

I know it's a horrible deal, but apparently she'll go lower due to the fact that it will be sub-optimal even after the repairs.
As for my own labor, at least I'll be improving skills that will help me later in life.

Ford F-150, from sometime in the 1990s. I have most of the skills needed to fix it myself, and parts aren't that expensive.

Re: I love my car :/
I think the point is he's taking the bad deal because it's his mother and because he doesn't mind fixing it. If he didn't take it she'd be stuck with a used piece of crap that she can't sell for much. I understand it, I think.

I've been taught from a young age that nothing comes free or easy in life. Basically, if I wanted any other car, I'd have to buy it on someone's terms, this isn't any different. She won't, in good conscience, sell a car she knows is in that kind of shape.

I am taking it for those reasons. I have most of the skills needed to fix the truck, and learning how to fix the break line wouldn't hurt. The parts aren't all that expensive, the truck is absolutely worthless in its current position, it just takes up space, and wouldn't be worth more than a few hundred dollars even fixed up. She has a guaranteed buyer, the truck will no longer be useless, and I will have a truck. Even though I am getting a poor deal, everyone comes out satisfied.
