The NES had a large selection of baseball games to choose from, but none stood out more than Baseball Simulator 1.000. Released in 1989 by Culture Brain, Baseball Simulator 1.000 allowed you to create your own team from scratch, naming players and giving them statistics that would be followed in gameplay. On top of this, you could also play a full season within a six team league, adjust the length of the season between 5 and 165 games and it kept track of individual stats and team statistics with a battery backup system. All of this placed Baseball Simulator 1.000 in a league of their own, but Culture Brain didn't stop there!
Quite possibly the game responsible for the "wacky sports" genre, Baseball Simulator 1.000 had 6 teams with "Ultra Plays." These "Ultra Plays" included pitches that would engulf the ball in flames, hits that created earthquakes and super dives to catch a far away fly ball, among others. Shortly after Culture Brain's creation, games such as Base Wars for the NES and the Mutant League series for the Genesis coming out. Even games such as NBA Jam and Hot Shots Golf show some traces of Baseball Simulation 1.000 in them.
Other modes of play included:
Exhibition - A single game against the computer or another player. If playing against another human, you could also select a best of seven mode.
Edit - Edit up to six teams, changing names, stats and Ultra Plays.
New League - Edit the "Original League" to include any six teams you want, from
any preset league.
Watch - Select two teams and sit back to watch them play a full game.
Overall, this game is an unforgettable classic which brought countless hours of fun to those who had the chance to play it. And unlike any other "wacky sports" game, Baseball Simulation 1.000 still holds up as a solid title even after the novelty of the "ultra plays" wears off.
