Wanting to move on..

I'm getting tired of my current job, I hate the hours, the job itself (customer service cleaning the entire store) and just about everything about it. I want to move on but have no idea what to do. I came home sick tonight (have to go in tomorrow if I don't I'll have to get a Doctor's note) and still don't feel that great.

I've just been thinking of things to do and nothing comes to me, I'd like to work in a call center or something, but the main issue is driving, I do not have a license which I am working on atm. So right now I wanna look at working from home or something for the time being. Do you guys have suggestions on how to accomplish this? I was suggested by my Mom to restart the Snack shop she did, but I wanna see what other things have.

I'm just at the point now that I need to find my place in life and really for me it's like a deer staring into head lights. Thanks.

Re: Wanting to move on..

Well for myself, I just decided what it was that I enjoyed doing, and made it my work. That way there is no work, only play. I couldnt do a crappy job so I had no choice really.

This can take a long time to achieve depending on your field of interest though. You like video games and anime, why not try to make a job out of it? The snack shop sounds like it might be cool too, mind you.

Re: Wanting to move on..

I have no idea how to bring anime in the picture, not a good drawer, and it seems my story attempt failed. Video games, I know I am good at finding bugs in stuff, haven't looked into that area as of yet. Looking at Nintendo.com | Nintendo - Corporate Information | Career Opportunities I could do anything but Developer, I do not want to do that. I am great at Customer Service, so might look into that (if I can figure out requirements).. damn no jobs available atm. Would be nice to work for them or something.

The Snack shop did bring in a lot of money (and less assholes like I get at my work) and might be my option 2. It'd take commitment to set it up on my own though (willing to do it, I actually enjoy wheeling and dealing, it's due to playing Orbit/CollecToons since 2002), get a sense on what people would like and go from there. Nothing big though.

Re: Wanting to move on..

You love anime and video games. Learn Japanese and go work with someone who does a lot of import distribution like Atlus or X-Seed.

Re: Wanting to move on..

I didn't get a license until I was 22 and I had already been driving for 7 years. I never got pulled over and that never stopped me from going to work. I'm not saying that you should do the same, I just don't buy it as an acceptable excuse. You can always ride in public transportation. If you really are tired of your current job, then you'll leave and find a way to go work at that call center. They usually need people to work anyways. What are you pending with your DL?

I wish you the best of luck Tails. It's a hard job market out there.

I too, am going through a career change that will start next week. Took me over a year to find a job.

Wow.. I'd actually like that. o.o I took ASL (american sign language) in school which did me no good seeing Teachers only put on movies like Shrek 2 so they did nothing.

DL? The issue is I am scared of trying new things. Like in school, scared to try jeans, afraid to ride in the plane, afraid to work etc. Definately know I need to put up though, I THINK there's one right around the corner too.

Did you get tired of Tax Season (which I was actually going to ask did that start already)? Don't blame you, it's only my second year doing it (first independent) and it's boringggggggg.

Not necessarily the actual preparing of tax returns, just the many hours away from my family. Most of my daughters' dance competitions and recitals happen in the winter months, and I probably miss about 80% of them because I am at the office. I would be at the office from sun up to sundown, enough time when I come home to wolf down some dinner, tuck them into bed, then crash. Rinse and repeat, six days a week until April 15th (this year because of holidays and the like, it will be the 17th). I know there are some people who work longer hours than this and hey, more power to ya, it just does not work for me at this time in my life.

You'll miss out on many great experiences. I'm a cautious person also, but there are somethings that I would have missed out on if I did not take a "leap of faith" of sorts. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, they are learning experiences. I have learned that from my 4 year old, she has no fear, it's fun to watch, sometimes inspirational.

Ditto.

I know there is a place here that teaches a business class and after you graduate they guarantee they will get you a business loan to start whatever idea you have. You could start an anime shop or something like that.

Also, you thought of going to school? If you want a job at a place like Nintendo you will probably need a degree.

I work 10pm-8am 7 days in a row so I sorta get what you're saying. Besides it being dangerous (my luck like I said when it happens in it's 20 year history I was the cashier to be robbed ) due to area bordering it. Usually when I'm off I try to do as much as I can in one week that I should do in two weeks. All that does is make me put stuff off in the end, either it's something small on here (game requests) or something somewhere else. Not healthy, I don't recommend it.

If you don't mind me asking what are you gunning for now?

Sadly I've seen that, dating is also a "new experience" for me as well, and I had the perfect chance with this blonde chick and I really didn't move forward. This was like in 2008. I regret it.

I doubt an anime shop would work where I live. HOWEVER, I did just remember something. Could ask my friend who owns that Arcade if he's looking for someone to help out there. It'd be like RU there really.

There is some schools around here (many of them that end in Oak) that I may look into. But I also don't wanna do something so rash I end up hating it. Like learning Japanese, it makes me wonder if I'll get bored of it. Guess this is an example of "leap of faith" Sabby just said.

Yeah, I have, just nothing of interest. I figured that would happen (sadly I saw nothing on qualifications) and I do like the idea of bringing foreign games to the states like with Atlus too. So many series that were over looked during the years and it sucks.

Good luck Tails! I know what you mean about the Job blues. Been there many times in the past in my younger years.

Working at an arcade could be cool. I had a friend who worked at one for years in the early 90's and he always knew what new games were coming in so I always got the scoop.

Re: Wanting to move on..

Tails, this is a little far fetched, but how about the Peace Corps?

Right after I graduated college, I was about your age and I was very unsure as to which direction I wanted to take in life.
I came within inches of joining the Peace Corps and even though my life has turned out pretty good, I wish every day that I'd taken that leap of faith and joined.

Understanding that you are generally opposed to trying new things, this might be completely out of the question, but if you want some adventure in your life, travel to places you've never been, help those less fortunate than you and make a little cash and earn some great resume building skills, it might be a good 2 year investment for your life.

Peace Corps

Re: Wanting to move on..

@Tails: A fluency in Japanese can bypass the need for a specific degree. Being a white, American male actually works in your favor. Think about it, it saves them from relocating someone else, you're already well ingrained into the American culture, and they'll believe (rightly so) that it'll be easier for a white American male to gain shelf space for their products in stores owned by mostly white, American men.

All it takes is determination. You could even learn while working.

Professional Texas hold em poker player, all you need is the right pair of sunglasses.

I completely changed careers at 29, no regrets 6 years later. I did it as a married man with 2 boys, a mortgage, plenty of bills etc. I think its great that you are willing to make a leap instead of staying in that job. I hope you find your place.
