Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
It wasn't clear from the article whether this is something that can be patched by Sony, or if this is as such a low level that it can't be patched. Or maybe I missed something.

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
It most likely can't be patched. It's over, this is it.
The key signature is hardware specific. If they were to change it via firmware all the old games which use this key won't work. Also, if there is a dual signature of some sort, the old key would still need to work, thus allowing homebrew to still function.
Basically the only way to fix this is to make PS4 lol.
Also, porting an Arcade OS front end for PS3 is now possible.

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
I don't know much about nexgen but hasn't the 360 and wii been hacked for years? If yes, and they are not being killed then the same should be true for PS3. As EA said, used games sales hurt them much more than piracy.
This is my favorite part.

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
@Kong: To my understanding, the Wii requires an update to newer games that patches the hacks. Basically if you wanna play something like Kirby Epic Yarn you must take the update.

So you must have Internet access to play newer games?

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
Wii is making tons of money and it's been hacked wide open, Kong is very right.
The main difference that makes this so severe for Sony is now they are, like steve pointed out , the dreamcast, meaning that it has been broken completely wide open. It's very unlikely this can be fixed unless they do A LOT of work. At least Microsoft and Wii have some sort of ability to still detect pirated code.
Insult to injury, since they got the keys to the PS3, a PSP homebrew group got the keys to that system as well. Both systems are now open as of yesterday.

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
And the average gamer knows how to do this? Not likely. Sony is still going to make their software sales.
@Kong, in a nutshell, if you don't run an update, you can't play on XBL or Wii online, if you don't have internet anyways, then it isn't a problem.

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
There's a second problem. You can't play newer games on a hacked Wii unless the games are hacked as well. The game discs themselves come with updates that auto-install to prevent/disable modding.
I'm not in favor of this at all. While pirating is illegal if I want to install a program that allows me to run legally downloaded homebrew games on a console that I've purchased I should be able to.
It's akin to a car company installing measures to only allow you to fuel at one specific brand of gas stations.

I never needed to mod anything, I got emulators on mine like two months ago through putting a hacked file in a folder of the psp then opening it. I often throw my smw hack I'm working on, on to the psp and let others test it lol.

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
I agree with you Tenser. If you wanna mod/hack your console offline then you should have every right to do so. I know Microsoft tells people that it's fine offline but if you try to connect to their servers they can and will ban you, your gamertag, your console - depending on the severity of the infraction.

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
The homebrew guys have a tendency of keeping up with the system updates, so just update your hombrew channel, (or whatever) and you should be good to go.
I wonder how this will effect the PS3 sales, I personally have never been so tempted to get one till now. The potential of homebrew on that system is huge.

Would be nice if they ended up making money off of being hacked and realized that PS4 should be left open.

Now I was told in confidence the following story. One of my good friends is lead PS3 dev for an unnamed company. Everyone who has a sony developer kit gets access to an official secret developers messageboard to discuss and share information about the SDK (which has been leaked you can download it via bit torrent). When they got rid of the otherOS feature a thread was created about it. There were a lot of angry developers. Chances are if you are working on the hardware/coding for a living it's your hobby as well. ANYWAY, the official sdk being leaked and this thread leads me to believe there will be a lot of help from game companies and people on the inside to get some cool stuff going. I'm sure Sony will have a no tolerance policy about this, however they really messed up when it came to getting rid of linux.

Re: Sony gets pwned by hackers!!!
I just say this on youtube...I know 40 min is long so heres a summary lol
Forget jailbreak devices; the same team who broke the Wii wide open now claims to have done the same for the PlayStation 3, leaving Sony's console at the mercy of homebrewers and pirates alike.
During proceedings at the 27th Chaos Communication Conference, a group of hackers gave a presentation called "PS3 Epic fail". You can see where this is going. Sparing you the overly-technical explanation, the team claim to have found the PS3's "private cryptography key", a skeleton key of sorts for the console that would allow users to install and run their own code on the machine.
It's hoped that tools allowing the installation of Linux - something Sony blocked earlier this year - will be released by the group next month. And from there, the sky - or, at least, a ton of pirated and homebrewed games - is the limit

That is very possible. If that happens then I dont think I'll be playing online that often if at all.
I'll just stick to playing games on the console lol..
The other bad side of this I see is Sony could end up doing what Microsoft did moded 360 users they banned a million peoples systems from even getting online and voided there accounts for playing pirated games or having modifed equipment. Whats to keep Sony from doing the same thing.

If someone is cheating in online multi-player or pirating games they should have their account banned.
