There’s a line of thinking amongst modern PC gamers, and a distressing number of developers, that the average PC game is far too complicated for console gamers to be able to appreciate or understand. It fluctuates between mild elitism and bald-faced contempt, and it’s given us games like Halo and Civilization Revolution. It’s also a surprisingly modern notion. In the days of the NES, RPGs and strategy games of the PC tradition were ported to the NES with no alterations made for the sake of demographics.

I take exception to Halo being dissed like this but I whole heartedly agree with trashing Civ Rev. That game had such potential but it ended up being a shallow imitation of a great franchise.

An interesting article but what's his point? Is he trying to say that Maniac Mansion and a couple other games are equvilent to the massive library of "complex" pc games? If he's trying to defend the intelligence of console gamers he failed miserably.

I for one think that most old school console players probabaly didn't have a choice in the matter.
Computers were expensive, my mom brought one home in when I was 15 or so and it was really out dated then, the coolest thing it could do was display an image of a cougar in 1 color, poor mom thought she was bringing home a real treat. I'm rambling now so I'll keep going. A few years later my mom brought home a work laptop, and we got internet, and of course I snuck it into my room at night to look at every boys dream come true. I knew nothing about internet history or anything and when she brought it back into work the next day her boss went to show her how the net works, and she opened the history up, asian slut this, teen fatties that... she said she was never so embaressed in her life. lol.

I had an Apple IIe compatable at home that ran on a GEOS OS when I was in elementary school. Moon Patrol, Telly Turtle, Oregon Trail, Castle Wolfenstein, etc...

Around early middle school we also got a C64. It was hooked up to run IBM casettes as well. Bunches of games of which my favorites were Wizardry and Space Taxi.
