Super Mario World Turns 20
November 21, 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the Super Famicom, and its flagship title Super Mario World. Since its release, Super Mario World has been widely regarded as one of the best games ever made. As a platformer, it allowed people to explore and find alternative routes to the end game, and introduced the friendly (and very hungry) green dinosaur: Yoshi. Though the game was not as flashy as fellow launch games, F-Zero and Pilotwings, this title is what initially drove sales of the fledgling system.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
I'm starting to hate anniversaries because they make me feel so damn old. I was twelve when this game came out, where has the twenty years gone?
This is the Mario game that I really played a lot and still love to this day. I liked SMB1-3 and played them a lot too but SMW was THE game and it's still a damn good game by todays standards.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
For me SMB 1 was the game, an it still holds up.

Out of the series I have the fondest memories of SMB2.

2 would be a close second for me, I prefer the gamplay and style of it over the Nintendo developed ones.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
Mostly it was because SMB2 caught me completely off guard. Sequels were virtually unheard of outside of computer games. I had no idea about the game until my best friend showed me his copy in school. Crashed at his house that Friday and Saturday night.
Two new playable characters, each one with their own mechanics. All new bad guys and items. Such a giant leap from SMB1.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
I have no complants about SMB2, and while SMB3 is generally revered as the 2-D mario gold standard, my favorite of the 2-D Marios is SMW. The cape, secret level exits, switch palaces, ghost houses, challenging fortresses, and of course Yoshi, that game is so sweet. Downloaded it on Wii about a week ago.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
To this day, my first game.
But seriously, this game is the reason I just love platformers so much. I remember playing Quake when I was small but I just never got into FPSs the same way. To jump on something and proceed to pick it up and chuck it is what any person wants to do in a good game, and it's something we want to do to a bad game.

Same here. Though I don't think I feel as old as you DB.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
Love Mario World. Yoshi's Island was ok, but it as no SMW. I too liked SMB3 and wasn't too fond of 1 or 2. But I liked Mario World more.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
weird too, I remember playing this game a lot more than many things when I was 2-7 years ago. Man we were really behind the times with consoles; me being almost 16 now.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
The kids in the Youth Group my Wife and I run still play this game. It really has stood up.
I still love Mario's first outing in Donkey Kong though. They don't get that though.

Re: Super Mario World Turns 20
I remember trying to beat Super Mario World for the first time one Thanksgiving day, about 10 years ago.
