Looking Back: The Disney Afternoon

If you were a child growing up in the late ’80s and early ’90s, two things were almost certainly true about you: You loved playing NES, and you regularly tuned into one or more of the Disney Afternoon cartoon programs. Create a Venn diagram of the overlapping interest between those two things, and what one might find is two circles that overlap almost completely.

It comes as no surprise then that Disney would waste no time exploiting this highly intertwined demographic to its fullest, releasing a series of licensed games based on their cartoons to the Nintendo Entertainment System. In a twist that seems bizarre by today’s standards, these tie-in games were almost all incredibly well-received. Not satisfied with simply releasing shovelware that could potentially damage their media brands, Disney employed the help of renowned developer Capcom to create games that would not only cash in on the cartoons, but actually strengthen their popularity.

Of course there was also a few disney gems on Genesis like Quackshot, World Of Illusion, The Lion King... good times.

Disney games were always nice too look at, interesting to see how epic mickey turns out.

Aladdin was definitely well done on the Genesis. I thought it was much better than the Aladdin that came out for the SNES.

Maybe not, but they were well planned disney games.

@Tails never played Toy Story or Great Circus Mystery. Aladdin was fun though

Wasn't spin offs of Aladdin on it though?

I remember seeing Aladdin The Animated Series on every once in a while.

I used to love watching Duck Tales and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers back to back. Even though I was a bit older at the time, the shows were produced well. I never did see Tailspin, but it looked cool too.

I'm working on a Disney cartoon now, it's a spinoff of Peter Pan and it's for young kids, but its actually pretty darn funny, Hook and Smee have made me lol at my desk several times now.

Talespin was awesome. My alltime favorite one (even though it didn't have its own video game) was The Mighty Ducks (unless you count the NHL series of games )

Ah, yes. I remember better than even SFF the Disney Afternoon. Duck Tales was my favorite as a kid.
