Eric Corp Gamer's Retro Uprising Exclusive Review 4 (maybe
):
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
NOTE: What kind of sub-title is that that's like saying:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: 7 Chaos Emeralds, yeah I know that's dumb.
NO BACKSTORY HERE, LET'S GO TO THE REVIEW:
Graphics: 5/5
The graphics have really improved from pixelated sprites, to more detailed sprites, and meh backgrounds, to good backgrounds. Anyway, the graphics have become amazing.
Gameplay: 3.25/5
The gameplay's more than just platforming...you have to go around and collect all 6 Golden Coins to gain entrance to Wario's Castle, and you go through many zones like Macro, Turtle, Mario etc. (I won't spoil it, a lot.) There's a least 4 - 6 levels per zone, and you have to complete all to get to the boss. The levels are pretty good, the layouts are more complex (some of them, exactly) but, some are kinda annoying like ones that you need to keep going up, and also sometimes you can't tell if there's a platform below you, and... you know. The bosses you fight at the end are relatively easy, only 3 hits and little that will throw you off (except maybe the Star Zone boss). The final level is probably one of the most annoying levels ever on the Game Boy, even when you play the level countless times, you'll be dying a million times. Eventually, you'll reach Wario himself, at first, is easy, 3 hits you think it's over but when he gets the first powerup as the rabbit, it gets real annoying, as he jumps and he uses the and it's really annoying to hit him. 3 more and another form. When he gets his second powerup, he shoots fire, now you have to dodge his fire and try to wait till he lands in the right place to jump, After 3 more hits, you beat the game! Thank god. The ending isn't so great, nothing special. Another problem with the gameplay, when you lose all your lives, you lose all 6 Golden Coins, and you have to get them again, the bosses come back and you have to beat them, to again enter Wario's Castle. That's one of the stupidest things ever...that's like saying in Sonic 3 if I lose all my lives, I lose all the Chaos Emeralds I've gathered.
Overall, it's still good for the Game Boy.
Controls: 5/5
Barely any problems at all with the controls, as the jumping doesn't have a problem here.
Sound: 3.25/5
The music is okay as, there weren't really much music that stood out. The sound's alright, too. Nothing much.
Replay Value: 3.25/5
Though many Mario fans will replay the game for the gameplay, some of the problems with the gameplay may affect certain fans of Mario.
Overall: 3.5/5 = 70%
While it has some innovations, it's doesn't stood up as much as the original. Play it if you wish, but in my opinion, it's kinda a "step back".
