Eric Corp Gamer's Retro Uprising Exclusive Review 3 (maybe): Super Mario Land

*BACKSTORY OF WHY I'M REVIEWING THIS GAME*
SKIP IF THIS STUFF BORES YOU!

Since I created a series based off this game on DeviantArt and posting my episodes here (2008 - 2009; 2010 -), I thought I'd review the game that inspired me (other than Rogerregorroger, Bigfoot3290, Deepercutt and many other people) to create a series though, not really successful but, I do it anyway for me and other people's enjoyment. So, I'm going to review the game I've been using for my series.

*REVIEW*

Graphics: 4/5
Pretty good for a launch game, and on black-and-white portable gaming system. Similar style to Super Mario Bros (no parallel scrolling, and simple backgrounds).
But why are the enemies pretty small unlike Mario? (similar thing like Sonic the Hedgehog for the Master System, sorry I didn't mentioned it)

Gameplay: 4/5
Basically Super Mario Bros, on a portable gaming system. But, I do have some problems, like the Superballs, why do they shoot so slow? The level layouts are kinda hokey, as they give some spots that will annoy you as, you'll die a lot cause there's something that's hard to dodge. The controls does little to affect the game but, it does it a little, and I'll tell you why.

Controls: 4.25/5
All pretty good except a few things. The jumping is kinda awkward, as it can get stiff at times. Also, when you fall off, you seem to fall a little faster than, when you just jump and fall, and that can get a little annoying. Other than that, it's still tight and well-done.

Sound: 5/5
The music is really fun to listen to. For a launch game, it sounds really great. The sound also is likable, too! Nothing wrong here, as it's damn good.

Replay Value: 4.5/5
Since it retains the style that Super Mario Bros. uses, it's up the charts. Although, the game's kinda short (only 4 worlds, but what do you expect?) but even so, it's worth it replaying many times.

Overall: 4.35/5 = 87%
A really good game for Mario's First Epic Adventure on a portable gaming system. Despite it's problems, it retains to actually being pretty good. I recommended it all the way! Enjoy it!

Sorry, if I bored you with my backstory but, it did help my comics by a lot.

wow, i thought the game was a real step back in mario games, i give it 2 out of 5 overall. super mario land 2 got it right though.

It really wasn't that much of a "step back". I mean, what do you expect? It's similar in style to Super Mario Brothers. Besides other than SMB 1 (as SMB 3 was released in 1990, and SML was released in 1989), this is probably the best you're gonna get, at the time.

So, I'm not saying that it does much innovation to the series, but at least it replicated the Super Mario Brothers gameplay we all loved.

it didnt replicate it for me, sprites were too small, control stunk, level design was cramped, anytime you scrolled the screen forward you couldnt see anything but a blur, graphics were crap.
they took what they could from mario 1, and tried to make it small, not even realising they didnt need too.
