Re: Current events!
In case you only read the headline of the article, the Mormon church "officially" allows dark skin people as of this month. "Unofficially" they have been doing this for 35 years.
Mikman, you keep saying things that sound like you think there is only one basic type of religion/faith. There are countless flavors. That would be like saying a Red Sox fan isn't a real sports fan because the Dallas Cowboys are the only true sports team.

Re: Current events!
I should explain myself. A government can legally recognize any belief system, but my faith only recognizes what religions exactly follow the divine laws, while others are simply belief systems. However, as I said before, in a secular society, I legally recognize many more beliefs.
My other point is that all these sects claim that they are true religions like Christianity or Islam, yet don't exactly follow the same laws as the holy books which they supposedly revere, so how can they actually be those religions. I realize this more from a logical perspective than any faithwise one.

Well scientology is still considered a cult in lots of places, so more time than that.

Re: Current events!
Yes, but you speak from a non-religious perspective, in which any belief system is a religion. Each person has their own interpretiation of what is right and what is wrong, as we show here, but if you don't agree with another person's views, then you believe that they're wrong, which is how I view other beliefs according to my own. Thus, I believe that they're wrong and don't qualify as a true religion of God, while whoever has more secular ideals would believe that all religions are incorrect and thus equally qualify as religion.

Re: Current events!
You're free to believe that your religion is true. The point I'm trying to make is that everyone thinks the same way and there's zero proof for any of them so you're all equally right/wrong.

Re: Current events!
That's what point I made.
I also point out that if a person does something in "the name of religion" doesn't mean that s/he is actually religious, especially if that religion forbids what s/he does. That one say otherwise would be like if one "legally" violated the law under the "name of the law" and wasn't arrested. See the "logic?"

Re: Current events!
This no true scotsman circular logic is exhausting. I'll just say that you don't get to decide who is or isn't religious or a true believer.
BBC News - Utah judge denies request to halt same-sex marriages
Another story about the Mormons. They've been using their vast wealth and numbers to fight against equal rights and now a judge has shut them down, they aren't allowed to stop this decision or appeal it on this level.
Quote:
The state asked the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver to grant an emergency stay that would have immediately stopped gay weddings until the court can rule on whether last week's decision was valid.
Judge Shelby himself heard Monday's challenge, and rejected it.
|
Quote:
|
They challenged a ban on gay marriage passed by Utah voters in 2004 by 66%. Judge Shelby said that violated same-sex couples' rights to equal protection.
|
Quote:
|
Judge Shelby said Utah had failed to show that allowing gay marriages would affect opposite-sex unions. "In the absence of such evidence, the state's unsupported fears and speculations are insufficient to justify the state's refusal to dignify the family relationships of its gay and lesbian citizens," he wrote.

Re: Current events!
I live on Long Island, about an hour away from NYC. It's been about 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit all day. We got about 6 inches of snow which isn't that much to be honest. I remember two years ago we had a storm that was a whole lot bigger. On Monday, the weather forecast has a high of 57 and a low of 10. New York weather is weird.
---------- Post added at 06:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:08 PM ----------
But I heard Boston got hit a lot more, as it usually gets more than 12 inches of snow during these kind of storms.

I have no idea why people are acting like this is a big deal. I can understand people who aren't used to snow but people that live here? This is just another snow storm.

It's the same here in the midwest. Nearly every year it is cold and can be really cold and snowy from November to March.
But people are always complaining it's too cold, and are caught off guard when it snows. There is always a rush on shovels and salt. Salt I can see because you might have run out and forgot about it last year, but shovels?

Re: Current events!
Yep, just another day.
Up here in the Adirondacks I got about 14 inches of snow which isn't a big deal since it was spread out over a day.
It was colder than usual Friday with a high of -6 but "meh".
What gets me is people still drive like idiots, just slower. Also all the morons who don't have a vehicle with AWD, 4WD, or some kind of posi-traction. It's New York. It's the Adirondack Mountains. It's not like it was NOT going to snow.

Re: Current events!
Today I am sad to be an alum of the University of Illinois
So on Sunday the Chancellor, who is female and asian(this is important to the story) sent out an email to the student body that classes would continue as scheduled despite it being rather cold with below zero windchills.
The students then took to twitter with racist and sexist comments about the chancellor because they had to go to class when grade schools and high schools in the area had school cancelled.
I went to class with below zero wind chills. I had class when it was cold and the University lost power. They need to grow up and deal with it. Does it suck? Yeah it does, but that's no reason to attack someone over their race and gender.
Thankfully some students piped up to counter the morons on twitter pointing out how stupid they are.

Bill Nye Debates Ken Ham | Answers in Genesis
Bill Nye will be debating creationism tonight at the creation "museum" in front of a sold out crowd of mostly creationists from the south. This could go really badly or it could be epic. Either way expect the crowd to treat Nye like crap regardless of how factual he is.
I'm gonna try to tune in, anyone else?
