Greatest thing ever. Period. Case closed.
If you all don't have one then get one. You will thank me later, and wonder how you lived without one. Tivo did have a rebate where you got one free, all you had to do was pay for the service. I dunno if that's ended now.

So anyone know why my Tivo can see my connection, but cannot connect? I take all my componets out clean them and power everything on again, and the Tivo can't connect.

Tivo: I see you have a network for me to connect to and download the program guides.
Hobbes: Yes, why don't you connect?
Tivo: I can't find it.
Hobbes: You just saw it, there see the network name?
Tivo:.... Error 309
Hobbes: What the hell does that mean?
Tivo: check your network.
Wii: I can connect, wheee look I flash blue when get data, I'm so happy!
Tivo: I hate you.
Receiver: I think you hooked the Center speaker to the left front port.
Wii: blinks blue.
Tivo: No network.

Got the Tivo to connect had to change the wireless router channel (again) to 2, this seems to work with the Wii and the Tivo.

I have had my Tivo for a couple of years now. The funny thing is when we moved we had to wait to set it up again and my wife went nuts without it.

Again people listen to me, you need a DVR, I'm partial to Tivo myself, but whatever, you will love it.

I have thought about this a lot.

DVR's allow you to remove commercials. Up til now we have all entered a good faith arrangement with the TV station that we will view their ads in exchange for free TV. Most TIVO owners use their TIVO to break this agreement and skip the commercials. This is completely legal and you have every right to alter the signal that comes into your house in any way you want. However if enough people break the agreement of viewing ads in exchange for free TV then the nature of free broadcast TV will be forced to change. And the general TV viewer will not like this change. It will probably mean lower quality TV, less selection, much more product placement and maybe more paid TV like HBO. This change is inevitable and I predict that the first company to embrace the technology and invent a solution will make a lot of money.

The same thing can be said about software that removes ads from websites. Users have gotten used to most websites being free. During the Internet bubble this was no big deal because websites could easily support themselves with advertising revenue. But as banner blindness and ad removing software becomes more ubiquitous this will change the Internet the same as TIVO will change broadcast TV. And the average Internet user will probably not like the change. It will mean the same thing, lower quaility, more paid sites, more product placement.

So that being said I will step off the soap box and admit that I am part of the problem as well. I get all my TV from torrents which is ultimately the same as a TIVO. I view no commercials. I find it a bit more convenient (especially since I do not have a TV and if I did then I would only get two channels and neither of them are English) but I can see how most would prefer TIVO.

I don't really use my DVR to skip ads per say, it's more of a beneficial side effect. I mostly use mine to view shows at more convenient times. If my DVR didn't allow me to skip ads I wouldn't be negatively effected in any way and would still use it regularly.

Its unfortunate too. The fact is DVRs allow more viewers to watch a network's programming. Its too bad that have to ad skip....

Isn't television advertising revenue, based mostly on viewership, as in the more people watch something, the more the channel broadcasting that show charges for the ad/commercial time/space. I believe that as far as ratings are concerned, Tivo'd shows count toward viewed shows. I don't think there's a mechanism in place for anyone to tell if I'm watching the commercials along with the show, when I view it later.

I see and understand the problem you're bringing up Toad, but I'm not sure how the companies buying the commercial time can truly quantify who is watching the ads or not, unless the natural assumption is that all Tivo'd ads go unwatched.

I'm sure they've come up with some extremely overcomplicated formula that factors in how many people own a DVR, out of those what percentage of their viewing time is prerecorded and so on.

On the brighter side, I actually prefer subtle product placement. It just seems a bit more realistic to have someone drinking a Pepsi instead of a Fizzy Pop Cola. I mean just look around your home. Your stand mixer has Kenmore prominently displayed right in front, as does your TV, etc....

Did you see Talladega Nights. Good movie but the product placement was a bit over the top. They even had a real Apple Bee's commercial towards the end. Not just product placement but a commercial.

It does not matter what your ratings are if the person buying the commercial does not get acceptable returns on investment then they will not continue to pay for commercials.

I thought it fit well with the vein of the conversation. The funny thing is, I haven't watched either of them in a few years...not even A Christmas Story, during the all-day TBS marathon.

Would you prefer something from the Wyld Stallyns?

Nothing. There are a few reasons.

1. You can't install Java on a Wii.
2. There would be no way to control the game since you have nothing to simulate the keys on the keyboard. I even plugged a usb keyboard in and it wouldn't work.

You can however play flash games that only require a mouse and one button. But then you run into a different problem. The Icon you're using in the game lags behind and is hidden under the "pointing hand" icon used by the Wii.

For the Opera browser full release, I think they need a way to disable the "pointing hand", and Nintendo needs to release a plug-in keyboard compatible with the remote.

So Brody and Tekka, your Mii's have infiltrated my Wii. So I have a question: If I play as your Mii, and increase or decrease your skill in Wii Sports then does that affect the Mii on your machine?

In other words is your Mii on my Wii a clone, or a single Mii that wanders around to other's machines?

Oh and I have some random people showing up in my parade now.

No, the Mii that you have of mine is a clone. If you play with them in Wii Sports, it will not effect the ranking of my original Mii on my console.

As for the parade, I have 11 people in there on last count. The funny thing is that you don't have to be directly linked to another console for your Mii to travel in the parade. I went to a friend's house who I hadn't linked with yet and actually saw a couple of my Mii in his parade! It makes me wonder if any of the ones in my parade are from other people I know.

Now don't think for a moment that I didn't know what was going to happen here-

Anyway anybody have any idea when Nintendo is going to be sending more accessories out? I can't find a nunchuk anywhere, I did find a Wii remote though.

You think there doing the "hot dogs and buns" thing? You know, when the amount of hot dogs in a pack isn't equal to the amount of hot dog buns in a pack.:whatthe:
