Re: So maybe the UK isn't all bad
The BMI is faulty anyways. I have two buddies who are both professional weightlifters. The BMI says that they're both obese to morbidly obese. These are guys that eat nothing but baby food, plain turkey, white rice, and supplements for weeks on end.
The BMI doesn't account that muscle weighs more than fat. It says that me, at 6'2" should optimally weigh 180lbs.

Re: So maybe the UK isn't all bad
Well that was the point of this new study. They found that probably half the time the BMI matched up to body fat % but the rest of the time it was off. It also said it doesn't take into account how women and men have different optimal amounts of fat and how much muscle women lose when they age. BMI is junk.

@steven- No. But you have to consider that it's an average so like if all the southern states are porkers(which they generally are) it's gonna throw off the numbers. I read recently that education plays a role in it so the states with better levels of education have less obese. I think it said Mississippi had the most fat people and the lowest scores for education.

So the BMI is just BS?
I agree.

That could be from sitting around studying all the time; I gained 30 billion pounds while I was in college.
Mainly because of the bakery department's discount muffins, cakes, pastries, etc. and possibly also due to the enormous amount of pepsi and twizzlers I was honking down.
So yeah I was a serious fuckload of a fatass porker myself back then.
{Ok maybe not that big but I sure felt like it}

Reason: Notice how I blame studying then talk about how much I was pigging out?

Penn and Teller's Bullshit did an episode on BMI being BS.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mike Tyson in their prime were morbidly obese and Adonis, the most desired male body type, is obese.

How tall are you?
---------- Post added at 07:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:30 PM ----------
The biggest grip I have with the BMI is that it basically accounts for one of the three basic somatotypes, Ectomorphic, which is typical your skinny, non-muscle slow twitch muscle fiber types.
Without typing all of the details, this link goes to the basic differences.
Body Type and Build - Somatotype
The majority of people, and particularly athletes are of the mesomorphic or endomorphic body types.
---------- Post added at 07:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:39 PM ----------
A better scale to use than the BMI would be to have a body fat test done. This can give you an accurate idea of how much body fat you have, what percentage of your mass is fat, and how much lean mass you have (muscle, organs, bone, skin, hair, etc)
It is impossible (and fatal) to lose all of your body fat as it is important in thermoregulation, is used to regulate and break down certain viatims in your system, cushioning for internal organs, and for nerve myelination, which is nerve conductivity.
---------- Post added at 07:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:45 PM ----------
I've always been a big guy, square shoulders, long legs, big, child bearing hips... and I know my lean mass is over 200 lbs, so according to the BMI, if I had zero percent body fat, I would still be overweight.

Good luck with that. You're going to start getting mad cravings for sweets and anything with carbs and you'll constantly be hungry all day.

Re: So maybe the UK isn't all bad
@Jim, 6 feet tall
@Joz, Actually it's going well, after 2 weeks there is a noticable difference. I think what is going on isn't that I'm cutting the carbs, it's that in doing so, I'm inadvertantly cutting out the poutines and burgers for lunch each day. So it's not the low-carb, it's just that it's forcing me to eat better. I don't like sweets so that's no biggie, it's the bread i'm missing.

Re: So maybe the UK isn't all bad
Cutting out a daily routine of poutine seems like a big difference, isn't that loaded with fat and stuff?

One of the few good things to come out of Canada. They should really take the maple leaf off of the flag and put a big plate of poutine on it.

I think you may be onto something there, Jim.
Poutine is a great suggestion but I think a Caffe Latte would be more appropriate = this city seems to run on them.
The American Flag is a natural; just change all the stars to the logos of all the fast food places.
Damn that crap tastes good, but it'll kill you deader than a sack o' hammers.
It's diabolical, I tell you.
