I'll take part in the golf tournament but since I have never played golf or even a golf game (except for mini putt), I vote for a handicap

If you're doing a league/season style game, you don't need cut-offs or anything like that. Just a set number of games. Who ever has the least amount of strokes (cap factored) at the end of the set number of games wins.

Say you want to do 1 round a week for 10 weeks. First thing you should do is have everyone do a no count round which only serves to establish hcap for round 1 or you can start off with 0 hcap, up to you. You'll need to recalculate hcap average after every round and add the new hcap to the next round each time.

Factoring hcap is easy. Just subtract the number of strokes from 72. So if you shot an 87 on round 1, your hcap for round 2 would be -15, you would subtract 15 strokes from the next round. In round 2 you shot an 85 you would take that average of -15 and - 13 for a new hcap of -14 for the next round. If, instead, you shot a 68 you would have a +4 hcap, thereby adding 4 strokes to your next round.

You should also note that you should try to only use official courses where par is 72. That's 5 par 5's, 8 par 4's, and 5 par 3's on average. This shouldn't be too difficult as most likely all courses you come to will have be par 72.

Also, one last thing. Seeing who has signed up for this I'm willing to trust everyone here. I don't see why we can't open this up to any system. Just post screen-shots like with the Break a Million contest.

Alright, that answers the hcap question, it's 100% of par. It's different than bowling where hcap doesn't penalize you if your average is over 200. I didn't realize that golf penalized good golfers that score under par. I might change that, if you manage to have an average score under par, your just a scratch golfer(0 hcap with no penalty).

I figured that most courses on the games are par 72. If its different, hcaps will be adjusted accordingly.

We might go with the screen shot scenario with this group. I just don't want the temptation of playing an extra round if the first one isn't to the players liking. Or the reverse to happen, where someone has an incredible round and the others don't believe him and call him on it.

Scratch golfers being penalized is news to me...but then again, I didn't know there was a handicap system in bowling at all.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to play. with a season/league format there's no bracket to fill (unless we have a season ending tourney)*files idea for later*, so the number of players is virtually limitless.

Also, we'll need to find a way to account for people who come in late, and people who miss a round - how will this affect their rankings.

I'd like to see some sort of total score adjusted for hcap stand in as a money list.

I say that a player cannot come in until a tournament is completed.

Round-->Tournament-->Season.
4 Rounds = 1 Tournament. TBA Tournaments = 1 Season.

I think to determine a season winner, we will have to institute a point system based on the number of participants (kinda like a money list). The more people involved, the more points passed out.

But hey, the more the merrier, I count 9 participants so far.

suggested Pts system:

for all except 1st and second

x place(n) yields n-x points
second place(n) yields n-1 points (one point bonus over 3rd place)
first place (n) yields n+2 points (two point bonus over 2nd place)

example:

ninth place of nine = 9-9=0 pts
eighth place = 9-8=1 pt
seventh place = 9-7=2 pts
sixth place = 9-6=3pts
fifth place = 9-5=4 pts
fourth place (of n players) = 9-4=5pts
third place (of n players) = 9-3=6 pts
second place (of n participants) = 9-1=8 pts
first place = 9+2=11 pts

please feel free to change or throw out completely

i like that system, but first place should get 1 extra point instead of 2 so that way it would keep tournament more closer and more exciting

I agree that everyone here can use the honor system.
I also think the point system looks fine as Brody proposed it. I think it's important to get a few extra points for winning a tourney.

After all, getting first place amongst this field will be quite an accomplishment.

I know that NES Open does (3). The rest, I will have to check.

If you're willing to work with me on the points totals, I'd be willing to hand out actual points as fake money at the end of each tournament. First place being no higher than 1,000 points/dollars.

I'm willing to issue a number of badges for consistent competitors on a ratio of four players to one badge. So, right now we have 9 players so I'd be willing to hand out two badges, First and Second. Get a steady count of 12 players and I'll hand out a badge for third place as well, etc...

Online entry fees (PayPal preferred, of course), prizes, etc.

I was planning on running the whole show with just slight assistance from yourself (Tenser) and Kong. You guys already do so much for the site, let someone else run the show. Sit back and relax, I got it. I'll just need your help with point administration (if we decide on it). The point system I show on the link was just how the pros are deciding the player of the year, I was thinking of using something similar for us. I can find out the percentage if we want to distribute points. I think just one badge at the end will suffice.

Looks to me that the only way to earn major points is to become a game mod, and unless you want me to unintentionally crash the site, I'll let someone a bit more tech savvy handle those duties. :cool:

I don't think I have given points to Game Mods just for being Game Mods though I might have of and then forgot.

Being a game mod is not technical. It is data entry, secretary type stuff.

I think that makes for a good start for the first tournament. Let's get all the rules and games ironed out and shoot for the end of next week or beginning of the week after. Tenser, I can postpone the start of this until your Game Mod Challenge is finished. If there are ANY questions, bring them up now, I want this to run as smoothly as possible. I will post some rules later on and we will brutally edit them and go from there. Remember we won't cover everything but when something questionable comes up, with the group we have here, it will easily be resolved.
