In today's part of the whole Pirated Games review, I'll be reviewing
Super Mario Land 4 (or
Super Mario 4) for the Game Boy. While there are some that are (somewhat) completely original, there are games like this that uses another game and just change it to make a quick buck.
Before I start, I just like how they put the Wing Cap Mario (from
Super Mario 64), and "1996, 1997 Nintendo", to try to make the game look official, but we obviously know it's not.
What game is this basically?
Crayon Shin Chan 4 (GB)

Changes made from the original: Graphics, title screen, and level layouts
REVIEW:
Graphics: C-
The graphics are below average, and obviously lacks in originality. However, some of the sprites have been created by the pirates themselves. The sprites the pirates made, like Super Mario, looks alright. There's not much to say, as most of the sprites have been taken from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Overall, alright, but very hit-and-miss. However, it's obviously the best part of the game (like most pirates)

Gameplay: F
Now, you would probably be saying: Am I criticizing the gameplay of the game that is another game in disguise? No. Before I talk about the worst of the gameplay, the power-ups in this game are the mushroom (turns you into Super Mario), the feather (turns you into Wing Cap Mario), the star (gives you an extra hit if you do not have the mushroom nor feather), and a power-up to play as Yoshi (for some reason, not like it has any special abilities). In my opinion, they are all pretty lame. The level layouts of the game are changed from the original game (Crayon Shin Chan 4), and it's probably one of the worst level layouts I have ever seen. This makes the level layouts of Somari, look like Sonic the Hedgehog. Also, the collision detection is hit-and-miss (or is it Mario is much bigger than the Shin-chan sprite is supposed to be?). To add on what I said about the level layouts being absolutely atrocious, the game likes to be very cheap since you are unsure what's under you, and you'll most likely fall to your death. This game likes to use little platforms way too much, and also, the enemy placement is ridiculous, and both can lead to cheap deaths. It makes me wonder if the game was only produced to seem that the player would still have the Mushroom or Wing Cap equipped. I mean, what were they thinking? To make things much worse, every time you die, you start back at the beginning of the stage. Now you may be saying, so what? Since the game levels are pretty big, I should expect some checkpoints, but there is none. To make things MUCH MUCH worse, you have no continues. Once you die, you have to start from the beginning of the game. This is probably the worst thing the pirates ever released in the video gaming market.

Sound: D+
As for the sound, it's pretty stupid. I would expect them to add a lot of variety in the music, and it just gets on your nerves. I don't know if this music was taken from the original game or was made themselves, but it sounds horrendous. As for the horrible scale, it's probably on par with
Somari, but not on the level as
Sonic Jam 6. The sound effects are alright, but nothing special. You just have to hear it to understand how retarded it sounds.
Controls: C
The controls are decent, but can react slowly sometimes. The most criticism I could find is how you fly with the wing cap. To do this, you have to repeatedly press the JUMP button to fly. I mean how are you supposed to do that in real life? Unless you have very tight fingers, that is very unlikely. Why can't it be like in
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins with the Rabbit Mario, which you hold the JUMP button. Other than that, they are pretty average.
Replay Value: F
This game is not worth your time...at all!
Overall: F-
This game is an abomination of mankind. I think you must destroy every copy that ever exists. I just couldn't believe in my own eyes, that this game actually existed. DO NOT GO NEAR ONE OF THE WORST GAMES EVER KNOWN (along with
Action 52,
Superman 64,
Big Rigs etc.)
Next Part: Sonic 3D Blast 5 (GB) / Sonic Adventure 7 (GBC) (expect it by December 2010 / January 2011)
