Okami

What makes Okami one of the best PS2 games of all time? Let's delve in and find out.

Okami is an action/adventure game where you control Amaterasu, the japanese goddess in wolf form. The story starts out by explaining the epic clash between Nagi, Orochi, and Shiranui. Shiranui was slain by Orochi's poison and the villagers had a statue commissioned for Shiranui. Fast forward 100 years and then someone removes Tsukiyomi, Nagi's famous blade that sealed away Orochi. Sakuya the wood spirit uses up most of her power to summon Amaterasu, who must find brush techniques for her Celestrial Brush in order to defeat Orochi.

Graphics: 5/5
The graphics are amazing in this game. The game looks a whole lot like artwork flowing onto the easel.

Sound: 2/5
The only irritating part of the game is NO DIALOG! instead, you hear random noises come out of the character but they at least got the animal noises right.

Replay Value: 5/5
This game gets a high replay value based on the chance to unlock the most used cheat in any genre: invincibility. You have to collect 100 stray beads just to unlock it.

Challege: 5/5
Okami has some areas where you need to focus or else you may get more game overs. One area has a poison lake that makes you restart.

Okami is one of the better Action/Adventure games i have ever seen on the PS2. It surely beats out the Wii version (which cuts out most of the ending btw.)

I stand by that having seen playthroughs. Most annoying character has to go to Waka/Yami.

Why would lack of dialog hurt a game? For me it's always been gameplay first, story second and appearance/sound last.

I'm not sure, I haven't played it.
I'd assume that it is one of the analog sticks.
They should make a version of this for the DS, touchscreen is a perfect fit for paintbrush.

You hold R1 Square and draw with the right analog stick on PS2.

As for how would lack of dialogue would hurt a game, how would you feel if you heard a silly noise instead of either no voices or voices.

That is the most legitimate point i have heard yet Tenser would it make you feel better if i upped the sound to five and make it better?

Perhaps. It can also be interpreted as how well a wolf or god would here a human speak. Kind of like how the Peanuts characters here their teacher is suppose to represent how well kids listen to adults. Birds have a complex language of song but it all sounds the same to us.

I don't think it was meant to be understood by a Japanese speaker when it was released in Japan so when they translated it all they translated was the text. I'm not trying to make excuses for the game, just my opinion.

You'd think. But Link is the stereotypical silent type as is Amaterasu, so no complaints there.

In the portrayed mythos gods are not all powerful beings. If Amaterasu could just use divine intervention there would be no game.

That's true, but think about it this way, Okami's portrayal of Japanese mythos has its flaws too as well as its strengths. I've heard people try to tell me which gods were related and which weren't. I hate that, because in my home, I am the expert. Okami changes things to suit the games purposes. They changed the fact that in mythology Susano and Amaterasu were brother and sister. In the game, they bear no relation and Susano is a stupid mortal claiming to descend from Nagi.
