His games are pretty simple in comparison.

Maybe in some respects, but in other respects they are wayyy more complex.

For example, customization. In Metroid, you have the choice of using missiles or super missiles, and then a hand full of guns. In the CV's you have unlimited combinations of equipment to approach your challenges with, some combinations even triggering special effects. Iv'e always found it similar to FF3/6 in that respect. This to me weighs much more heavily in how much I enjoy a game.

Not suggesting that this style would make for a good Metroid game, but you kinda crapped all over him without suggesting any redeeming qualities, and defense mode was activated.

Well, that's why I said he probably couldn't do a good Metroid game.

I'm not saying his games are bad, even if I personally dislike Symphony of the Night and the 6 games afterward that copied its style.

Unrelated to my opinion: Koji's GDC talk. (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/213706/Father_and_SON_IGA_talks_Metroidvania.php)

I'm with SC on this. It adds another random factor into the game. It doesn't punish players for playing too well, it mixes things up.

Expecting Mario Kart to be a serious racer where skill wins the day is like expecting Smash Brothers to be a serious fighter that relies on technical combat and combos. It needs to be wacky and random and allow for huge changes in the leaderboard at a drop of the hat.

If you feel that being way out front and maintaining a half-lap lead on second place is fun then Mario Kart really isn't the racing game for you. There are plenty of racers that have no rubberbanding in them, go play one of those.

>inb4 crying about being hit with 3 blue shells right before the finish line and going from first to last.

It's a game. It's not meant to be srs bsnss.

Dudebro
04-03-2014, 08:27 PM
Fun? You sure we're talking about the same thing? I'm talking about the extreme hand holding mechanic that makes it almost impossible to be in first near the end of the race. Countless times I was doing good and ended up in last place or close to it because I made the mistake of being in first near the finish line. Being hit with 5+ items at once and being unable to recover in time is not fun it's annoying. I'm sure it's fun for little kids or casuals who got their first console but for everyone else it doesn't do anything positive. It teaches you to play badly, stay in 3rd or less if you want to win.

To be clear I am not a great MK player and this was still an issue for me. If it ruined the game for me it must've really bothered people who invested lots of time into it and didn't wanna just give up.

I'm not talking about limiting the items for the players in the lead, that's fine.

Kong
04-03-2014, 08:49 PM
I'm sure it's fun for little kids or casualsAre you suggesting that is not the target audience.

It is a party game. Party games are for casuals or little kids.

Edit: Party games are for one hard core gamer that wants all of his causal friends to play with him but all he can get them to play is a party game with a rubber band mechanic. I'm not a Mario Kart fan at all but if I'm ever trying to get a group of my friends to play this is the on the top of the list. N did a great job targeting their audience.

My experience is from SNES. I assume not much has changed.

Kugyince

@Dudebro: So are Steven and I little kids or casuals? You know, because the Wii was both of our first consoles and all.

Anyways, putting aside the blanket stereotypes and name calling (if you like this you're either a child or a casual). My statement still stands. Mario Kart is intended to be a random and crazy racing game. It is not targeted to those who want a racing game where skill wins the race.

If you are trying to play Mario Kart "strategically" by hanging back a few places from first then you are not playing the game in the way the developers intended. While you're free to do so, that's not how most people enjoy the game.

Slime Slayer
04-03-2014, 10:36 PM
That mechanic is in place to ensure that everyone playing is able to enjoy the experience equally. Aside from that, if you are really good at Mario Kart you will win the majority of the time. I know I've mentioned this before, but there was a group of players that I played with in college, all of us were average to good players, but one of us, his name was "Roach" was very good. Roach won at least 50-75% of the races (4-player). We played a lot, and this result was consistent. To this day, I can't figure out exactly what he did differently than the rest of us, but he was just on another level.

Also, now that I have a kid, I appreciate the mechanic more then ever. It might be the first game that me and her will be able to enjoy together and not have to pander too her needs. You are in the same boat so maybe you can look at it that way.

Directly, only blue shells, they target the lead player and can be fired from last place.

They only target the lead player but if you are in the blast radius, you will get hit as well.

Right, it's funny when playing online in MK7 and seeing the first 3 positions playing a game of reverse cat and mouse when a blue shell is released. Also worth noting, they can be dodged with a well timed mushroom boost.

@DB, please don't take this the wrong way, but it's really funny picturing you acting childish when you loose in a game for children. Big beard and everything.

Dudebro

My experience is from SNES. I assume not much has changed.
You assume wrong. In the Wii version they made it so that first place is destroyed by multiple items right near the finish line almost every race. In the Snes version things were more even across the board.

It is not targeted to those who want a racing game where skill wins the race.
I just wanted it to be like the MK game I grew up with. Instead I was given a game where practice and skill is punished in favor of last place not feeling bad. Maybe that's ok with you guys but for me it's not fun. I'm not some overly serious try hard either I just don't like to be punished for enjoying the game.

That mechanic is in place to ensure that everyone playing is able to enjoy the experience equally.
Not everyone and not equal, what about the people who are able to do well and get punished for it?

It might be the first game that me and her will be able to enjoy together and not have to pander too her needs.
Except it is actually pandering to her. It's giving her a boost to make her catch up.

it's really funny picturing you acting childish when you loose in a game for children. Big beard and everything.
Picture it if you want but it's not reality. With MK I tried for a while and then just gave up and moved on. I don't like hand holding in games it sucks the fun right out of it.

Either way it's not like I'm gonna be getting this MK game I was just curious if they fixed that problem or not. If someone hears one way or another about it I'd be interested to know.

Kugyince
04-04-2014, 12:30 PM
You assume wrong. In the Wii version they made it so that first place is destroyed by multiple items right near the finish line almost every race.

That's an extreme exaggeration. I played Mario Kart Wii, got Gold in every ever Grand Prix including the Mirror, and was using the Wii Wheel on Automatic the whole time which is considered by the try-hards as the least acceptable way to play. With all that I still didn't have much trouble at all.

I just wanted it to be like the MK game I grew up with.

Hate to break this to you but the SNES Mario Kart that we grew up with is boring as hell when played without the nostalgia glasses on. I remember lapping other characters without too much difficulty, where is the fun in that?

Instead I was given a game where practice and skill is punished in favor of last place not feeling bad. Maybe that's ok with you guys but for me it's not fun. I'm not some overly serious try hard either I just don't like to be punished for enjoying the game.

I don't think it's about being "punished" or people "feeling bad". I believe the items are there to add a large amount of randomization to the game. Going from 1st to 6th, to 8th, to 4th, to 9th, and finishing in 2nd makes for a much more interesting race than hanging out in 1st for all three laps without even a real chance of your position being threatened.

Slime Slayer
04-04-2014, 02:55 PM
It's really no different than something like Taloon's, you can be playing very well, and still loose by means of something entirely beyond your control. That random factor is 100% of the reason Taloon's is fun.

Three out of four US gamers prefer physical games - NPD | GamesIndustry International (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-05-14-three-out-of-four-us-gamers-prefer-physical-games-npd)

The report comes from a survey of more than 7,900 core gamers ages 9 and up conducted in March. The research firm defined "core gamer" as anyone who plays five hours or more on Microsoft or Sony consoles, PC, or Mac, and plays in certain genres (action, adventure, fighting, flight, MMOs, racing, real-time strategy, RPGs, shooters, or sports games) on those platforms.

The NPD Group put the total US core gamer audience at 34 million people, with the average player spending 22 hours a week on games. Two-thirds of them also played games on mobile devices, and 70 percent played multiplayer games at least occasionally.

And the die hard fanboys are up in arms about the "sony trolls" and casuals bullying poor MS. They claim that the xbone is designed for the kinect and removing it ruins the experience. I even got called a sony troll for being happy about this and I haven't owned a Sony console since PS2.

The only good argument I've heard from fanboys is that this will hurt game production for Kinect. Forcing it on xbone buyers meant that pretty much every game could have some support for it and devs would feel confident about spending time and money on it. Now they will know that a good portion has no interest and would actually be upset if they added kinect stuff. More games will be like traditional games. I see it as a good thing for gamers but I can see why it hurts MS and any devs interested in taking the Kinect plunge.

Mario Kart was, in my humble, as close to perfect as a game could get...

With the announced Xbox One price drop taking effect in June, combined with Mario Kart 8 hype + release, I'd say that there is a small but nonzero chance that Wii U outsells Xbox One in the US in the May NPD tracking period.

Dudebro

It'll be interesting to see how well MK8 does. I haven't heard anyone hyped about it except WiiU fans on Gamefaqs and a couple people on RU.

Seahawk
05-28-2014, 12:02 PM
Nintendo (both EU and NA regions) sweetened the pot by giving you a free game if you buy it. I think it will do better than I've been thinking. It's the kind of game that would sell for a long time (Mario Kart Wii sales stretched far) but the Wii U limited install base might affect this, especially with casuals not buying into the system like with the Wii.

In other news, PS4 fell below weekly Wii U sales in Japan this past week. Unprecedented...

Bundling with another game does come off as desperate.

No one is buying their games anyway so they might as well give people some extra incentive to buying MK if they also were on the fence about another WiiU game.

Slime Slayer

I know I definitely want to pick up the bundle on launch, I can't be the only one.

Seahawk
05-28-2014, 03:44 PM
I don't really see it as a 'desperate' action - it's pretty much equivalent to a rebate, which happens all the time with new products of every category.

It's not a bundle game disc in the box - you have to redeem the Club Nintendo code to get it, which means creating one if necessary, tying you into the Nintendo product ecosystem. And the games offered in the US are older titles now (valued at 40$ (http://club2.nintendo.com/mario-kart8-promo/)) and your product will be digital only. It's a limited time offer as well, ending July 31.

To me this just seems like a standard fare marketing deal.

Dudebro
05-28-2014, 04:59 PM
Well I see some desperation in the context of the WiiU being an overall disappointment and Nintendo banking on these few big games to redeem it.

Seahawk

I think Nintendo has realized that the machine is not going to be a massively successful venture at this point, given how they've put much much lower (and realistic) forecast numbers for sales on the current fiscal year, 3.6 million units worldwide. Compare this to the insane forecast of the last year, it was something like 9 million or so.

Other than that, they are now making a profit on each Wii U sold at MSRP. Granted, not all of those units will be sold at full price, given the fire sales Nintendo has had to make with specific retailers in the past year, especially in Europe, where the console is in more dire straits than it is elsewhere.

In the end the data is all up to personal interpretation, so your opinion is fair.

2nd June 2014 – On 30th May, Mario Kart 8 for Wii U launched simultaneously around the world to global acclaim, garnering some of the strongest review scores in the history of the series. Following this, Nintendo has today reported that the game sold more than 1.2 million* total units across Japan, Europe and The Americas from Thursday, 29th May to Sunday, 1st June.**

"Such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers," said Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata. "With Nintendo set to showcase its future releases at E3 next week, this is a great milestone going into the summer season."

Prior to Mario Kart 8, the seven titles that have launched previously in the series have combined to sell more than 100 million total units, an average of more than 14 million units per title. This includes two of the best-selling video games of all time: Mario Kart Wii for Wii and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS family of systems.

A couple of those looked good but overall that seems a bit underwhelming.

I accidentally watched some of E3 today, it came on and I didn't change it right away because I was cleaning. I tuned in to see the opening for MS and I got to about Sunset Overdrive before I lost interest. Maybe I'm just getting old but I didn't see anything exciting. That game where you can play as the boss monster looked cool though. The best part for me was the polite clapping after the COD trailer, guess it's not hot anymore.

Can Tenser's two posts be edited to remove the video embeds and replace them with hyperlinks? There are way too many and it's really lagging both the forum page and the replying page.

Sony blew it. Big time.
They had a rocky start. DLC gets time at e3, seriously? But then they started actually showing off a multitude of different games. If they kept that up they would have had a good show, especially with No Man's Sky, which was probably the most interesting thing they showed (it needs to come out already or have more substantial information though, since it was shown last year).

Then they had a guy walk on stage and start discussing meaningless banter and statistics for a LONG time, before unbelievably moving on to network services and TV AND MOVIE TIE INS. Just a year after blasting away Microsoft's TV conference last year, Sony comes right back and does the same for 30 minutes straight. TV TV TV MOVIES TV TV ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING TV. It was suffering to watch. The last trailers don't redeem anything, GTAV is already out, MGS5 trailer was leaked earlier, Batman was cool I guess, but all three of those games are coming for the Xbox One as well.

Furthermore, no Final Fantasy XV, after showing it last year? No Kingdom Hearts 3, after showing it last year? No Last Guardian, after the hoopla with a retracted IGN article? Hell, no Japanese games of any sort, really? RIP Japan gaming.

Microsoft > Sony
You're up tomorrow Nintendo.

I hope not. Nintendo makes about 1 - 2 games a year that interests me. That's not enough to keep me occupied.

If it wasn't for Zelda, Metroid, and Kirby I would be a Sony guy.

Yoshi's Woolly World: I was pretty psyched about this game when they showed it last year. I'm glad there's a distinct lack of Baby Mario. I'm also very surprised they trotted out TenTen, Nintendo's best secret weapon. When you compare Yoshi's Woolly World to Miyamoto's Project Giant Robot and Project Guard you can really see the contrast in actual talent. Miyamoto's always been more of an ideas man while Tezuka's always been the one who actually turned those ideas into games.

Captain Toad: Never been a fan of Toad. Apparently this was a side game in New Super Mario Bros U? It really came off as an E-shop title and not really something that would justify a retail release.

Kirby's Rainbow Curse: Love Kirby. Love the clay art style. Just unsure of the game mechanic behind it. I don't think I'm up for more Kirby's Canvas Curse/Ivy the Kiwi. Looks great though.

Zelda Wuu: Aonuma said all the right things in the small clip. Big, open world. Free to explore. Art style looks absolutely amazing. If it pans out this is certainly a must-buy. I just doubt it wont be delayed to 2016.

Hyrule Warriors: I've never been a fan of the Dynasty Warriors games which is odd because I like mindless beat-em-ups. Maybe it was the RotTK setting. I might pick this up if Midna is playable through most if not all of the campaign. She looks amazing in HD.

Splatoons: This game could be actually amazing if you're playing with/against friends. If a few other RU members pick this up I'd be persuaded into grabbing it as well. I don't think I'd enjoy it half as much when playing against random people. Great concept and always nice to have another new IP. Hope it works out for them.

STEAM: The more I see of this game the less I want it. While the concept is interesting (SRPG x TPS) there's just too much TPS for my taste.

I'll post my thoughts on the other games when I go to lunch.

---------- Post added at 11:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:45 AM ----------

More on Splatoons: It's also nice to see Ninty trotting out the younger developers. They should've started this years ago.

Xenoblade & Bayonetta: Both look stunning. Graphical showpieces for the hardware. I'm very interested in Xenoblade. Packaging the first Bayonetta with Bayonetta 2 is a smart move on their part.

Amiibo: Not sure how gimmicky these things will be. Somewhere between the level of stereoscopic 3D (potential gimmick for all future games) and the Balance Board (dropped after a few select gimmick games). The Kirby one looks adorable but the full suit Samus looks too slender. Maybe Zero Suit Samus will be more to my liking. ;) I'll probably buy 1-3 just as swag.

Yoshi's Woolly World will be more challenging than Kirby's Epic Yarn, Nintendo designer Takashi Tezuka explained to us in an interview.

The difficulty level in Kirby's Epic Yarn was set pretty low for younger players, according to Tezuka. "With Yoshi's Woolly World, we don't intend it to be for younger players...we were going to make it a Yoshi game," he stated. "The courses beyond what we have on the show floor will get more challenging. And if you try to get all the collectibles, you'll find it pretty challenging. It'll push back."

The reason the game seems to be more challenging this time around is because there is a lack of Baby Mario, which lets you die from enemies. You can also die by falling in pits. These added elements make it "easy to raise the difficulty level as needed," said Tezuka. "It's kind of like Mario."

Super Mario 3d World, yes. Could make a cool little puzzle game. Diversifying. They can do solo Luigi & Yoshi Games, why not this? May not like it personally, who knows, but I'm totally cool with it.

Just speaking generally, I haven't weighed on this since I don't have much to say, being that all I've played is WiiU (Mostly). As far as Ps4 goes, I have a high end computer, so what can Ps4 do for me. Xbox one, same thing, but higher price tag for something worse than the ps4(Keeping in mind I do keep tabs on the consoles, play them now and then, and know the specs).

Nintendo's still the only one innovating, in my opinion, from what I'm seeing at least. that said, the Vita is honestly looking pretty good in the innovation aspect as well.

From what I've played. Mario 3d World, Tropical Freeze and Mario Kart 8 are all AAA titles.

Before I get torn to bits here. I'm not knocking the affordability for a next gen console that lies within the ps4. Good on them. I'm not knocking the "Affordability" of the Xbox one either *Cough* although it's worse for more money *Cough*. That's what they are. Capable next gen consoles for less money than a pc, and less power of a high end pc.

I'm grouping the WiiU on a different plain than all the other 3, and handhelds. It does things the Nintendo way for lack of a better term. Arguably still innovating and having innovative titles for it. I'm not just talking about the tablet either. The top-end titles at least are different enough, and good enough to say "hey WiiU is different from these other consoles". Not saying there isn't AAA Games or indie titles similar to DKC5 or Mario on other platforms, because there is... Kind of. There's every style of game out there from every platform (Just mostly Shooters). Nintendo's catering more to the polished Adventure, and platformer games I prefer. The style of games that there's less of on other consoles. Where as Everything else is still all about the Hyper Realism, and shooters... shooters... shooters. Realistic shooters with lots of blacks & greys and browns and white colour palettes making up the generic, runic, post apocalyptic look.

This sets them apart for me. Here's the basic summary for me.

Portability:

Vita < 3DS

Shooters/Realism & Indie:

Xbox One <<< PS4 < PC

Platformers & Eveything else generally untouched in the gaming world:

WiiU

All this said, personally. None of the listed consoles have done enough to warrant me wanting one. Probably because I have a high end PC, the Ps4 is not something I'm considering, and don't make me laugh at the prospect of actually paying money for an Xbox one (maybe I'll get the controller for PC gaming if it becomes compatible).

WiiU is close to me wanting one, but I cannot justify it just yet with what I already currently have to play.

Handhelds, I already have a 3ds that is pretty damn good. Not getting a Vita, although I am very willing to acknowledge it's got a lot of cool titles out, as well as upcoming for it. It's just really flying under the radar still.

CrispyChicken
06-15-2014, 10:43 PM
3DS has destroyed the Vita so far, BUT the Vita has been coming on nicely of late and while it probably won't be much competition compared to the 3DS, it'll be a nice boost for Sony to add to their already booming PS4 sales.

PS4 and Xbone have almost no interesting titles to me. What I do like from them, I get for the PC with better graphics.

WiiU titles interest me and Nintendo in general fits more of my play style. This is mostly because of the fact that I rarely play/enjoy shooters.

3DS is still my favorite system of this generation.

It's too bad MK8 only got two days in the tracking period. Although, I don't think it could have beaten watch doges anyways, that game came out for a bazillion platforms. Maybe it can take June NPD?

I'm surprised Kirby cracked the chart. And Minecraft still going....kids were buying copies of the PS3 version (which just got released) at the Smash event. Microsoft getting it exclusive for a few years was a big coup for them.

I wonder how many copies of the next gen versions Mojang can sell.

The layoffs at Microsoft are probably more related to letting go of the majority of Nokia staff after the buyout of that company.

Dudebro
07-18-2014, 03:05 PM
Around 13k of that is from the Nokia thing but -
The remaining 5,500 jobs cut across multiple functions, including marketing and engineering. Microsoft declined to specify which areas were hardest hit, though an internal email shows that the company is closing Xbox Entertainment Studios, which was just starting to produce original TV shows.
They can spin it as making the company more agile or w.e but it seems obvious that it's a bad sign for their console division after the TV TV TV focus recently.

Seahawk

They can spin it as making the company more agile or w.e but it seems obvious that it's a bad sign for their console division after the TV TV TV focus recently.

Of course, corporate spin like that will happen with any company.

The Nokia cuts were obvious, it's been clear for some time that the Nokia brand was on the way out. Nokia got destroyed after smartphones came about and everyone stopped buying their feature phones, which is a shame, as Nokia had a long history of phone innovation before smartphones flipped the tables on that market. Microsoft kept them alive for a while to bolster their Windows Phone line but acquisition was always the ultimate goal, probably for their patent portfolio. RIP Nokia and good phone battery life.

As for Xbox Entertainment Studios, it was reportedly only 200 employees total (http://recode.net/2014/07/17/microsoft-to-shut-down-xbox-entertainment-studios/), which is not very many considering this is 18k layoffs. Probably they see they cannot compete with media titans like HBO without sinking a lot more money than they want to. I don't think TV media production fits in with their company at all, they are a software company first and foremost.

Personally I think a lot of this restructuring is the fallout from the recent CEO change at Microsoft. After Bill Gates left, Steve Ballmer seemed to really want to expand the company's scope into lots of different areas, and of course they had to react after Apple kicked off the smart device age with the iPhone and iPad. This is why you have the Windows Phone, the Surface, and the big changes done to the Windows OS in 8. On Xbox you had the change from just games to the oft cited "battle for the living room", where you had non gaming media added to Xbox Live, Kinect, TV etc. With Ballmer now gone many of these programs are being rolled back since Satya Nadella kicked off this refocus effort. TV is cancelled and all the tablet/mobile oriented changes in Windows 8 are being redacted. Rumors say that the Xbox brand will be spun off from the core company. Changes ahead...

</off topic>

Anyways this restructure probably has little to do with Xbox, it is failing on its own merit just because the Playstation 4 is the hot product. People hear it has the better games with the better performance. People hear it has 1080p while the XB1 versions are less. People hear it has 60fps while the XB1 versions are less. Before the XB1 price cut you got all of that for less price as well. This is in reverse to the 360/PS3 gen, when games ran better, looked better on 360, had better online network with Live and all your (not you specifically, just in general) friends were on it.

Now, let's look at this months combined platform software sales:

1. Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, Xbox One, PS3, PC)
2. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
3. Minecraft (360, PS3)
4. UFC (PS4, Xbox One)
5. FIFA 14 (PS4, 360, Xbox One, PS3, Vita)
6. NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
7. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
8. Call of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Wii U, PC)
9. Tomodachi Life (3DS)
10. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)

PS4 version outsells every XB1 title. Even worse, the 360 versions are outselling XB1 versions. 360 owners seem either content to stay on the 360, or are jumping to PS4 instead.
So with multiplatform games selling better on PS4, XB1 has to do better on exclusive content, by either third party exclusives or first party productions. The former costs a lot of money paid to an outside company, the latter costs a lot of money paid to internal staff (who must also exist) to develop games. Microsoft doesn't strike me as having too many strong internal studios, at least compared to Sony (Naughty Dog, various Sony teams worldwide (these are disappearing though)) and Nintendo (obvious).

With such a long post I lost track of where I was going, but I'll close with this: despite the doom and gloom I've written here, XB1 looks bad only in comparison to the PS4 - it is not in any threat of falling off the market entirely like the Vita and the Wii U.

Slime Slayer
07-18-2014, 06:32 PM

"Similarly, Richard Windsor, a tech analyst at Radio Free Mobile, tells TheStreet that he has a negative outlook on Nintendo, but would be prepared to "completely reverse" his long-term opinion if Iwata were to push for the transformation of the company into a pure games producer and jettison its hardware business."

I guess if you don't want to read the article, in a nutshell most tech analysts think that Nintendo needs to get out of the hardware business.

"It's hardware struggles are beyond fixing. The Wii U has become trapped between two types of core gaming categories and can't get out. They're casual-based gaming (http://www.thestreet.com/story/12773280/1/ea-changes-video-game-landscape-with-madden-15-cinematogoraphy.html?utm_source=inlinetst&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=inlinetst), which is very big on tablets and smartphones, and hardcore-based gaming, which consists of highly-keen players who are willing to pay up for the Xbox or PlayStation (http://www.thestreet.com/video/12777829/microsoft-closes-in-on-sony-lead-after-doubling-xbox-one-sales.html?utm_source=inlinetst&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=inlinetst) gaming experience."

It's just how the "market analyst" business works. You get some idiot to make financial suggestions for a multi-billion dollar corporation. This idiot then acts like he somehow knows a specific market better than the hundred-thousand dollar think tank that any major corporation has.

To garner attention, notoriety, and ad revenue as a market analyst requires you to make "bold" claims. No one's going to pay attention to the fiftieth person to state the same opinion after all. The thing is, as a "market analyst" if your claims are proven incorrect five years down the road, no one's even going to remember. If your claims are proven right in five years though, you get to dredge it up and tout yourself as all-knowing.

There's a no-loss situation for market analysts to make giant, attention grabbing claims. The shoddy truth though is that Mr. Windsor and his ilk are probably no more qualified to analyze the video game industry than they are the rice pudding industry.

It'll be a sad day if Nintendo drops out of the hardware market. The NES brought back console gaming when these so-called market experts said it would be impossible after the video game crash a couple years earlier. Also, I'm still not used to seeing Sonic on every console available (especially Nintendo systems), it'd be downright bizarre to see Mario on a Playstation.

@Tenser- You don't think he has any good points then? Nintendo is doing great and shouldn't consider changing it's business model?

Didn't read it.

They've turned a profit on both the 3DS and Wuu. I think Ninty's business model could stand a lot of changing. I don't think getting out of hardware sales (hardware an licensing to their hardware drives much more of a profit for them then their software sales do) is something they should even remotely consider.

I thought the article made some good points

Care to elaborate on what points you thought were good and why?

Dudebro
07-23-2014, 12:00 PM
Well you and steven seem pretty heated about this already so I'm not very motivated to discuss it but I guess I'll try.

The point about Nintendo apologizing for bad earnings and how investors might not have much confidence in them at the moment. I don't follow corporate news but this seems to make sense given the circumstances.

The point about the WiiU being between two demographics, casual and hardcore gamers, and not being cheap enough for the former and not powerful enough for the hardcore. Can anyone really say this is inaccurate?

This quote - "The Wii U is truly just for core Nintendo fans". Same with this.

The point about the 3DS being in competition with a fast growing mobile gaming market. Aren't smart phones and tablets becoming the go to device for practically everything including gaming?

The point about how Nintendo could stand to make tons of profit if it got rid of the costs of making hardware. This seems like a no brainer. Cutting costs and reaping the benefits of making games for PC, MS and Sony seems like a win win for them and a big money maker. Seems like corporate pride is the only reason not to consider this idea.

I read the article as offering ideas to save Nintendo and/or help it improve. I think he brings up some good points and he's just saying what most people realize, Nintendo needs to do something big or it's gonna stagnate and suffer. You and Steven come across as just lashing out because you're fanboys. Not trying to start a fight about it, really. I was thinking of not even bothering to reply because of how defensive this got so quickly.

Kugyince
07-23-2014, 12:29 PM
I don't feel I'm being defensive, I just have a general distaste for market analysts. Especially ones who seem to follow in step with the Pachter crowd.

I agree with the top three points.
- Most investors don't care about long term success of a company. Buy in, make a quick profit, get out.
- The second and third point is painfully obvious and it's one of the things I dislike most about the company.

The last two points I don't agree with.
Analysts have been saying that handhelds are dead before the 3DS even came along. 45 million plus 3DS's sold speaks volumes against this theory. There's a large market for a dedicated portable gaming device.

The last point. Nintendo makes a profit on their hardware. I don't feel that Mr. Windsor understands that Nintendo's largest profit sector is not from software sales but licensing fees.

So much lashing out going in in this topic...

Dudebro

He's not saying dead he's saying declining. Is it really hard to believe?

The last point. Nintendo makes a profit on their hardware.
But wouldn't they make more profit if they cut the hardware costs and opened up their library to multiple platforms? Seems kinda hard to argue against.

The reason I posted the article in the first place was in response to this quote directed at Seahawk when he suggested the Wiiu might fall out of the market.

It's barely outselling the Wiiu, and it's a hell of a lot newer. Not sure why you'd suggest that the Wiiu might fall out of the market (keep dreamin) but the Xone is safe.

My intention of posting the article was to show that others shared the same view. It was not intended to upset anyone so if it did, I apologize. As a person who's been interested in the stock market for a long time, I consider what an analyst has to say an opinion and I'm interested to hear their opinion as much as I like hearing Seahawk's and stevencassidy's. But I don't put any more importance on their opinion than anyone else's.

As for my opinion, I don't think their hardware business is beyond repair. I do agree that the casual gamer is moving away from the Wii for sure and the 3DS somewhat. The 3DS will be fine and I think they'll always have a niche in the handheld market but if they want to continue selling consoles, a change is needed.

Seahawk
07-23-2014, 02:14 PM
Nintendo doesn't need to drop hardware, nor should they.
However, they definitely need to do it better than they have for the past few years.

Post iPhone launch they haven't had a successful product launch yet.
The 3DS failed miserably for several months before a long bomb price cut kicked off a recovery, sort of. The Wii U flopped through its entire launch year, with Nintendo making a bazillion retailer deals and bundles to try and move inventory. All of this backed by third parties generally abstaining development on their machines for the most part.

They need to not design their hardware around of a gimmick of the day (3D screen, tablet) or if they do they need to actually implement it well or do it at no extra cost to the consumer (even if this means eating that cost themselves). The 3D on the 3DS was dropped as a focus really fast, and its implementation on the 3DS is pretty subpar as it decreases performance when it is active. The Wii U tablet is underutilized, used only as a clone screen or not at all, and not even Nintendo is really coming up with uses for it (Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, a first party game, just turns it off!).

In addition they need to keep the cost down. 3DS launched at 250$ which was the same launch price for the Gamecube and Wii, for a portable system. Insane. Wii U was 350$ at launch with pretty meh first party games and the same third party games you could get on 360/PS3 for a lot less. It didn't help the PS4 was announced last year for 400$, with better hardware, more games, just everything about it making the Wii U obsolete.
This doesn't mean Nintendo has to make their own mega HD box, they can have whatever hardware they want as long as it is priced accordingly.

Other things are adding an account system (they are working on this but it should have been implemented a LONG LONG time ago) and region free (this is becoming more important as JP studios refuse to localize games, the 3DS suffers dearly for this, and Nintendo consoles are the only ones region locked) but these are minor points compared to what I wrote earlier.

it is not in any threat of falling off the market entirely like the Vita is and the Wii U (was, but it could fall to that point again).

When I wrote my previous long post I swore I had included the bolded, somehow it got lost in editing.

CatalystiCam
07-23-2014, 03:58 PM
I don't really think that Nintendo is in the wrong implementing these "Gimmicks". Consoles are at a point where whatever they do can simply be outdone by pc. Consoles need to focus on specialties that PC's can't do, and I think that's where Nintendo is coming from. It was clearly unnecessary for the 3ds as consumers trust their ability to make a handheld, and affordable price > gimmick has succeeded. I wouldn't be surprised to see another line of 2ds' hit the market being re-tailored for the older market. Meaning it would have the flip phone dealio going on and not be a brick that's intended to not break with lack of hinges. Not to mention the success with titles now hitting the 3DS' library. 3DS will do spectacularly.

As for the WiiU. I'm inclined to disagree that they should be going for this whole powerhouse graphics console. Yes, they settled on some weird gray area between casual and hardcore gaming. They should probably lean more back towards the casual market with what they have, but they do have the ability to make some hardcore games. Nothing graphically spectacular mind you, but why not? Graphics aren't everything.

I don't really fault them for going the route they did either. It was definitely rushed & overly-expensive technology for a new idea to implement the tablet controller, but they have it now. I actually do not think they should drop the tablet either. Maybe they can introduce a line of consoles and games that don't require it, but the tablet opens up a great plethora of ideas, especially when it comes to Asymmetric gaming. They've barely scratched the surface with the idea in games like Mario Chase, Luigi's Mansion and Animal Crossing within Nintendo Land. They need to start making some full games based off those kind of ideas of someone with a tablet fighting people on a tv screen under different circumstances. Just a thought. They introduced the tablet now. May as well roll with it. Unfortunately it's harder to program for and all that good jazz, but they got to get the ball rolling with it to get other game companies and consumers interested in the idea.

As for the WiiU. I'm inclined to disagree that they should be going for this whole powerhouse graphics console.
But no one here is actually saying that. What's being said is the WiiU is stuck between the two extremes and it's not good for business. Last gen they obviously won the casual market but this gen that market isn't as receptive. Only a fool would say Nintendo should try to compete with the entertainment boxes from the other two. Who thinks HD Mario World Infinity would sway the COD crowd, for example.

CatalystiCam
07-23-2014, 04:28 PM

Is local coop really a selling point anymore? I always see people talking about it being lazy if there's no online MP along with it.

Besides switching to just selling games I think Nintendo could turn things around by dropping the gimmicks and just focusing on good games, and not just for the family. I think they basically pushed a lot of their adult fans away and right into the arms of their competitors.

Kugyince

Nintendo's next console needs to have a lot of horsepower under the hood. You can not regain 3rd party support if you have a system that's difficult to port your titles to.

Personally I'd love to see them combine the portable/home markets next generation. Phones have been doing 1080p for years now. The technology is there and affordable.

You know my work is dead when I wind up here on a cell phone haha.

Is local co op really a selling point? I guess it depends who you ask.

For my friend group and I, yes. Big time. Pretty much all we play is Nintendo co op games. I never liked locally splitscreening ps3 or 360 games. Frankly when you scale down any of those 1080p games thats colour gradients mostly consist of gray, black and Brown with dynamic lighting I cant tell what the hells what. 2 player splitscreen is bad, but 4... Dont make me hurl. A lot of Nintendo's games or games for its console are colourful and things stand out. Eplit the screen 4 ways? No problem. Although ill say Mario kart 8s 4 player is harder for me to make out. Maybe the dynamic lighting I dont know.

Anyways. Not only that there's still clearly a distinct difference of Xbox/Sony multiplaer games and how they work better online. Nintendos games still feel better in a room full of friends and youbcan actually make out whats going on.

Back to my original point though. Personally my friends and I prefer the local games where we're in a room full of people playing some quick and easy party games for lack of a better term. I dont know what it is for me personally either, but I'm loud and outgoing in person whilst gaming. Throw me on Mic with some online game and im quiet ae can be. Its not as fun. Anyone thats played online games with me would know, db included. Dont get me wrong. Online games are fun but there's seperate appeals.

Also im aware that my friends and I qualify as a specific gamer percentage of 18-20 year olds that have easy access to getting to friends via cars and lots more free time but thw appeal is there.

Sorry for any typos. On phone.

I mean the latency can be a thing I guess, but that's not what makes online less fun, it's a lot more fun to sit with a group of friends, passing the controller or whatever when you lose, and there's something inherently satisfying about winning against someone right next to you, as opposed to a faceless person with a silly PSN name halfway across the country or even on the other side of the planet.

Online was nice without ease of access to friends. I fall in that college age category (though not technically in academic school (Acting Class). I see friends a lot like I said. Local multiplayer is excellent. I've made my point on that, and I don't see why not (at least with the WiiU) focus on that aspect, or the family aspect. Local multiplayer isn't a focus by anybody except Nintendo for the most part so cater to what's open, ya know.

I fully understand the appeal of online multiplayer. Most kids don't have a car or easy access to friends, and most late adults don't have time. Hell, I was the first category (I didn't have friends more accurately...) and likely to be in the second later on.

Furthermore, it's what Nintendo has to work with currently (the local multiplayer market) is the TL: DR of this.

MK8 sold 2.82 million in a month, that's pretty damn good for a game on only one platform. That's almost 50% of the entire Wii U install base.

Unfortunately it doesn't seemed to have 'moved units', or at least many new ones.
Alternatively, since it was on sale during only the last month on the reporting period, the real impact in hardware sales may be shifted into Q2.

All three new consoles suck eggs.

PS4 and Xbox One libraries consist entirely of "mature games for mature gamers such as myself". You can get almost every game on PC, and any exclusive games aren't breaking any new ground to be worth paying hundreds of dollars to have the privilege to play. You also have to pay for online on both.

The Wii U is saddled with a terrible and poorly implemented gimmick controller that is mostly useless and only makes the console more expensive. Third parties have abandoned the console, and Nintendo can't make enough games in a timely manner to prevent months of separation between releases. The only really good thing about it is that it can play Wii U titles in hi res but that's hardly a selling point.

Skip all three and get a PC. You get free online and games for mega cheap prices.

I have an Xbox One and have enjoyed it so far. But, I've never played a PS3, an Xbox 360 or a PS 4 so I have nothing to compare it to. Like SH said, the game choices right now kind of suck if you don't want to buy rated M games and I'm frustrated with the fact I can buy things like Minecraft and old classic games for the 360 but not for the One. But the games I have played have been awesome. My kids love the heck out of Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. The best part so far has been the free games. These so far have all been rated E or T and are perfect for my kids.

As far as console vs PC, for me they don't compare. I have no interest in moving my PC to the living room and hooking it up to my TV so they are totally different experiences. My PC is hooked up to a 29" monitor and I sit in an office chair which gives a great experience but is not very relaxing. I want a console so when I chose to, I can sit back in a recliner chair with a wireless hand held playing on a 60" TV. IMO, that's an experience that can't be duplicated with a PC.

If I had to do it all over again, would I buy a PS4 instead? Probably but the Xbox One doesn't suck.

I can give them somewhat of a pass on this since the CD add-ons and CD based games at the time were not successful but they knew the move was coming, they even tried to make their own which lead to the creation of their own rival in the PS1.

-GC: They went with their own media and not standard CD/DVD like the xbox and PS2 did. The lack of online also hurt them. They had an adapter that worked with 1 game I think.

-Wii: They had online but not as fluid as the PS3 and 360 and not nearly as many games supported it. Motion controls were interesting but there was a lack of third party support and it could not run the same games as their counterparts and thus ports were few leaving it behind after a huge start.

-WiiU: Now the system is around as powerful as the 360 and ps3 and got some ports, but with the release of the xbone and ps4 it will likely get left behind again once those systems get more games and pick up some steam.

Now I'm not saying the Nintendo systems sucked, they have their benefits and good games. It's just to me they have been behind the tech curve or are unwilling to push it with their consoles.

Tech is an issue but Nintendo has larger problems with third party relations and perceived demographics. This started all the way back in the NES days and has only continued since then.

My understanding about Nintendo, and probably the reason why their tech is behind everyone else now, is they are absolutely paranoid about copy protection. From what I've read, the biggest reason they never developed a CD add-on for the SNES was neither Phillips nor Sony could give a 100% guarantee that the games couldn't be copies or the system modded to play pirated games. Even now doesn't the WiiU use something that's like blu-ray but isn't exactly the same tech?

Early Nintendo NPD PR
Mario Kart 8 has now sold more than 1 million total units in the United States alone, becoming the second Wii U game to cross that milestone, along with New Super Mario Bros. U (1.69 million). Mario Kart 8 continues to drive momentum for the Wii U platform. Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013.

Notable Wii U games on the way this year include: Hyrule Warriors (Sept. 26), Bayonetta 2 (October), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Holiday) and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Holiday). These games will be joined by amiibo, Nintendo’s foray into the toys-to-life category, which will launch this holiday season. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the first game to support amiibo. Other games that will support amiibo include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi’s Woolly World, with more to come.

The continued strength of the Nintendo 3DS platform can be attributed to the breadth and quality of its overall lineup of software. To date, more than 40 million Nintendo 3DS software units have been sold in the United States alone. This includes 41 titles with a Metacritic score of 80 or higher, seven of which have a score of 90 or higher; and nine games that have sold at least 1 million units in the U.S. alone:

Mario Kart 7: 3.48 million
Super Mario 3D Land: 3.09 million
New Super Mario Bros. 2: 2.28 million
Pokémon X: 2.10 million
Pokémon Y: 2.01 million
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D: 1.39 million
Animal Crossing: New Leaf: 1.36 million
Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon: 1.33 million
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: 1.09 million

Four of the 10 best-selling software SKUs for July are exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS platform. This includes Tomodachi Life, which finished at No. 5 and sold more than 85,000 units in its second month, and Pokémon Y (No. 8), Pokémon X (No. 9) and Mario Kart 7 (No. 10). Those last three games appeared on the list despite being on the market for 10 months, 10 months and 31 months, respectively. The lineup for Nintendo 3DS will be bolstered by three of the most anticipated games of 2014: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Oct. 3) and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (Nov. 21).

§ PlayStation 4 led the month for next generation software sales by a considerable margin, with The Last of Us Remastered taking the #1 spot.

§ PlayStation 4 games accounted for more than half of total next generation software sales.

§ For the second consecutive month, PlayStation was #1 in combined home console hardware sales (PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3).

Other notable global PlayStation 4 sales milestones from this week:

§ PlayStation 4 sales have surpassed 10 million units sold through to consumers worldwide, demonstrating the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history.

§ More than 30 million copies of PS4 software have been sold in retail stores globally and through digital downloads on PS Store.

“Xbox One continues to sell at a strong and steady pace following the release of the $399 console in June, when month-to-month sales more than doubled,” a Microsoft spokesperson told GamesBeat. “We continued to see this momentum in July.”

Happy console wars.

“Xbox One sales are on a positive trajectory, nearly doubling sales in August in the U.S. compared to July due in part to strong demand for the Xbox One Madden NFL 15 bundle. A. The few times I posted JP sales (the data is public and free) nobody took note. Data comes out on several trackers (Media Create, Famitsu, Dengeki, others) weekly, this thread doesn't get enough posting attention to merit so much effort by me. Usually companies will announce official numbers in their financial briefings so waiting for those is probably better.

B. The video game console market in Japan is terminal, and is steadily losing relevance.

C. I don't have any reliable sales data for EU. EU is like 30 countries and there is no centralized sales reporting service.

D. Most people don't follow games released in Japan so posting their software lists is kind of pointless.

Here's JP data for Sept. 1 - 7
