Pirated Games Part 5: Super Mario World (NES)

Yeah, I'm returning back to my duties of my continuing Pirated Games series of reviews, at least until February 2011. Today, I'll be reviewing Super Mario World for the NES, a pirated port of the original SNES version, released in the late 90s by Hummer Team (some company in Asia). Now, will this live up to its name or it'll ruin it in so many ways? Check it out right now!

REVIEW:

Graphics: C+
Well, the graphics are overall above average by pirate standards. The transition from the SNES to the NES worked pretty smooth despite some stuff was removed to fit with the weaker system. The title screen is okay, as it does remain somewhat faithful to the original, though the logo could use more colors. The backgrounds are probably the highlight of the graphics albeit some details are removed from the original. The main sprite (Mario or Luigi) looks decent in looks and animation, but suffers from some poor coloring (why can't pirates ever get this right?). The other sprites are also decent, but suffers from the same coloring issues. The weird thing about the graphics is that why is the HUD at the bottom of the screen instead of at the top like the original was? Other than these problems, it is still standard for a pirated game, so what do you expect?

Gameplay: D-
The gameplay is the same style as the original and other Mario games, but it's been messed up really bad. The most major problem with this game is the collision detection. Why can't pirates can ever get this right?!? The detection is so bad, you'll still get hurt or die when you touch an enemy as small as a Goomba, or when you want to hit something, it won't do anything, but when you don't, it will. Another major problem is that the mushrooms appear way too much than it needs to. Where's all the fireflowers and the feather? Stop giving me mushrooms! Also, the controls really affect the Mario experience a lot and it butchers it so much that it is ALMOST UNPLAYABLE! Some of the stuff was removed like that thing at the end of each level that gives you star points (whatever it is called), and the Banzai Bill was removed to put three fireballs instead. Why? The only thing I'll give credit for is that it remains faithful to the original, but that's it. The game really butchers the amazing gameplay to no end, and I can't stand it at all!

Sound: F
Wow! They really messed up the amazing soundtrack of the SNES original. It's just like one of those pirated games that try too hard to sound like the original game it's based on like Somari. So, I'll say the music is par to Somari, but much better than Sonic Jam 6. So for pirate standards, it's probably very below average, but compared to the original, it's really bad. Personally, I really don't like it, and I rather play the game with the volume turned down. Judge it for yourself, but you'll probably not like it very much...

NOTE: Sorry...no soundtrack videos...check the videos above to listen to the music...

Controls: F-
By god, what did they done here?!? The controls suck to no end! The most major problems is the jumping, because when you run and jump, it likes to keep undershooting your jump making it really annoying and awkward jumping over large gaps. The walking and running is okay, but really sub-par in so many ways... I don't have so much to say, because it is so bad... I'm gonna have to say it again...just expected from pirates.

Replay Value: D-
Probably the only reason to play this is to their interpretation on how Super Mario World would fair on the NES to them. Not worth the time and money for this at all...

Overall: D-
This pirated game is a really terrible port of the popular SNES original with very poor implementation the whole way. This could have been a great idea if this game were made with professionals instead of pirates that want to milk the franchise for all its worth... I wish is that there were hackers for the idea to port this game in amazing fashion, but sadly, this is all we have here... a very terrible port of an idea that had potential.

I find nothing odd about the HUD being at the bottom of the screen:

My guess is that this game is based upon Super Mario Bros. 3, as it is the only NES game close to Super Mario World.

Compared to the SNES the music sucked. It didnt look like it rode smoothly either. Are there any on the DKC series?

Actually there are much to my disbelief, but then again, pirates always want to milk many franchises that are very popular to all its worth like the DKC series. In fact, there are so many pirates on the series (I'll say more than 3), but there are mostly based off the first DKC, and there are also a few based on its sequels, too. (Ex: Donkey Kong Country 4, Super Donkey Kong '99, Super Donkey Kong: Xiang Jiao Chuan etc.) Those pirated games are on my list to review, but that won't be 'till mid to late 2011 or 2012, though if I can, I could review them in a similar way I did my Somari and Sonic Jam 6, but they will come, I'm sure of it.

An existing cart of Super Donkey Kong '99 (Mega Drive / Genesis)
