I remember from art history that Picasso's "Guernica" was in response to the spanish civil war and I believe he was done most of his prominent stuff by 1940, so A is out. I know B) lasted a long time, but started closer to 1960.
Between C and D, I'm leaning toward D, strictly on gut.
